Hadn't seen it in 20 years, but The Truman Show was really, really good. Caught it last night and watched the whole thing. It's become a bit of a thing to itself, but in about 2 hours you get a pretty jam-packed, character built journey and arc and Carrey killed it.

I think The Matrix and Truman Show came out the same year, or back to back years, and talk bout two different treatments of the same visceral themes of reality, perception, and existential anxieties.

Finally watched The Other Guys last weekend.  Holy shit, not sure what I expected.

Thunderbolts - better than I expected but nothing great.  Could have used a bit more setup as I’m not a MCU nerd.  Seemed like a thin story.  I thought Pugh had a lot of charisma in this role.

Accountant 2 - utter dogshit.  Bernthal is doing a his best effort to be Daniel Day Lewis and it’s not working in this one.  Affleck playing an autistic person comes off like parody.  I don’t remember disliking the first one, but really couldn’t describe it so maybe I wasn’t paying much attention when we watched it or something.

I didn’t finish Thunderbolts or its predecessor Black Widow. One because my plane landed and the other because I fell asleep. And I love Florence Pugh. She could read a phonebook and I’d watch.

Apparently not though.

Keaton is unreal in that movie.  Him speaking to his team at Bad Bath and Beyond kills me.

The Professional

I haven't seen this in years - DAMN it's still so damn good. Reno is such an underrated actor and Portman is an instant star the moment she hits the screen, you knew even then she was destined for great things. And Oldman (I just watched the latest Slow Horses Episode, I needed more of him) is in peak form.

Meme worthy, but if you are a student of film - you should have seen this twice

It’s a great movie, but I always feel a little bit pervy watching it

For those into this sort of thing, every disc at criterion is half off today only. Some awesome 4Ks and box sets relatively cheap.

Cure, Battle of Algiers, In the Mood for Love (4k), Memories of Murder, Rushmore.

Thanks for the heads up!

Edit - Wes Anderson Archives (10 films) for $250 if that’s your thing.

I been watching non stop scary movies bc Halloween 🎃 👻

but… because I didn’t see a thread for this has anyone seen this. I just finished. I love the “Goose” real life guy. I hope they continue with this…I enjoyed the documentary.

I watched The Friend with Bill Murray. Very sweet movie, especially if you're a dog lover

Best scene is Will Ferrell being a total asshole about his "ugly" wife(who's Eva Mendez in her prime).

I watched Chainsaw Man Reze Arc last night...if you're into anime, especially gory, shonen ones that fucking destroy you, it's a good watch.

It was a decent running joke, but there were so many excellent running jokes and sequences. The scene with Christinith was great as were the Gator pimp flashback, the quiet funeral fight, Keaton’s TLC references and BBB meeting, the bribe montage, the list goes on. Great movie.

The Instigators on Apple. Damon and Affleck the Younger. Stacked cast, silly, farfetched, fun enough.

John Wick 1.  With respect to the other movies of the...quad...rology...JW1 is the best.

Saw Good Fortune at the theater on Sunday. Aziz Ansari, Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen. It's a comedy in the Trading Places vein. There were a few people in the theater who constantly LOL'd and I'm guessing those people are already big fans of Ansari or Keanu. Each star pretty much played themselves. The type of story has been well-explored. The twist here is it really shows the struggle for those who have to work gig jobs, in restaurants or in retail. That was an interesting choice because it's supposed to be a comedy yet has some rather depressing moments. The ending however is nice and trite and wraps it all up with a happy ending. As for whether it's a comedy. I found the legit lol's in the theater much more hysterical than the actual move, so ymmv. High 80s on RT, I'd give it 2.5/4.

Watched this with my wife a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes, it’s enough for a movie to just make you happy for 100 minutes.

The "Hi I'm Jimmy" line gets me every time.  There are so many hidden jewels in this movie.

I needed a palate cleanser after the house of dynamite debacle, so fired up Fail Safe for the first time. Incredible movie, highly recommend.

Couldn’t stay up to watch all of it but Papa’s Delicate Condition with Jackie Gleason was on last night. Had been ages since last time I’d watched it.

“Muscle Shoals”

Documentary about the competing music studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama that damn near recorded everybody.

Blue Moon starring Ethan Hawke. I wanted to hit Ethan’s character in the face with a shovel 20 minutes in because he just wouldn’t stop talking. It reminded me of every single annoying New Yorker I ever met all rolled into one person. Not that all New Yorkers are like this, but Hawke’s character just never stopped talking. By the end I felt bad for who he was playing. Kinda sad honestly even though this was more a work of historical fiction in that the event never happened like this with him being at the opening for Oklahoma! He’ll probably get some really good reviews for this role though.

This movie was very good but, it was also a depressing fucking beating.

Alice Braga, Sonia’s niece, is a bright spot.

You thought it was depressing? Interesting. Anyway if you liked City of God you’ll probably also like Amores Perros.

Depressing in that my life has been a fucking Disney Fairytale compared to what those folks in that movie, and in 99.999% of the rest of the world have to live through. I just can’t fathom little kids living like in that movie.

Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire?

I have not seen that one. I remember when it came out but, never got around to watching.

It’s fantastic and also both uplifting and depressing in that way.

I like these old-timers

Agree.  Boris Karloff in Frankenstein, Lon Chaney Jr. the Wolfman (Bela Lugosi was in this as well), Vincent Price in House on Haunted Hill were worth staying up till midnight as a child to watch on Scream Theatre.

Arizona (1940) Jean Arthur, William Holden, William Warren and Edgar Buchanan. Excellent old western and early starring role for Holden. Free on YouTube.

Stevie is a must watch for documentary lovers - but it is a very rough watch.

I found Hoop Dreams to be pretty devastating. Agee's dad and Gates's brother in particular (and pretty painful to google those two afterwards). Agee's mom was amazing, and hearing her describe the struggles of her life was pretty heartbreaking.

It reminded me of Minding the Gap, which ostensibly is a DIY skateboarding documentary, but - like Hoop Dreams - is really a snapshot of a particular type of lower class American life. Highly recommend for those who haven't seen.
