I recently watched Sommersby. It was okay, but just barely. Dumbass Richard Gere character allowed himself to get hanged when he didn't have to. Fuck that noise.

I'm guessing he means Bill Nighy.

Watched a schlocky Western yesterday with Errol Flynn called Rocky Mountain.   Very dated and of course politically incorrect but sort of interesting.

I watched that, too. Don't remember seeing it before, but it was interesting. I still can't get over Flynn playing Southerner/cowboy in so many movies with his accent and nobody questions it. At least in Montana they made his character Aussie born.

Recently watched a childhood favorite: Romancing the Stone. Then hit up Wikipedia to read more about the production and observed this glorious bit of subtlety in Alfonso Arau's bio:

Quote

Among a plethora of roles in his career, Arau played "Captain Herrera", a lieutenant of Federal general "Mapache", in Sam Peckinpah's 1969 western The Wild Bunch, chief bandit "El Guapo" in Three Amigos (USA, 1986), a comedy with Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Chevy Chase, shady businessman Manuel in the comedy Used Cars (USA, 1980), and the smuggler "Juan" in Romancing the Stone (USA, 1984) starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Well played, Wiki author. Well played.

Watched "The Worst Person in the World" last weekend and really liked it.  The main actress (Renate Reinsve) was terrific as was her boyfriend.  It takes some turns that are unexpected, but I thought it was very affecting.  I found it to be a great representation of someone around 30, just trying to figure shit out.

Worth a watch if you're up for something different.

Watched Black Crab tonight.  It had a lot of potential but fell pretty.

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.

This was good if about 30 minutes too long. I can see why people will latch onto this movie but I think it does try a bit too hard.

I guess Short Round never went through puberty because his voice is still the same.

Ambulance, new Michael Bay movie.

It’s truly a black mark on society that we don’t lock Michael Bay in jail so he can’t make more movies. I must really hate myself to pay money to see that shit.

Death on the Nile.  I liked Murder on the orient express.

This is not good.  It's a good thing Gal Gadot is gorgeous because she can't act for shit.

Too much CGI.

Took the kids to see Sonic 2 today.  Not bad. They loved it

Finally watched The Witch. So great. If The Northman ups the ante after this and The Lighthouse, Egger may have taken the title of best director currently working.

Oh yeah, Jonah and Mercy are a couple of little cunts.

Not really relevant but my dad took me (and my older brother and sister) to see Jaws  when I was just 8 years old. Scared the ever loving shit out of me and I had bad dreams that night.

Yep, totally irrelevant. Par for the course.

The Equalizer is winding down on the Paramount Channel, didn’t much care for it when it came out but damn if I don’t stop and watch it when I do catch it on.

Daughter and I saw Morbius.  I enjoyed it.  Don't care what the critics say.  She enjoyed it too.

Saw that ABC was showing The Ten Commandments, so needless to say I stayed up and watched it.

Good thing that almost never happens around here.

Apollo 10 1/2. As a child of Houston from around that era (early 70s)….it was like looking into a time machine. Almost all of it. The moon landing itself and the music predated me by just a few years, and I was an only child (not for my parents’ lack of wanting more), but the rest of it was a bullseye. If you are a child of SETX of that era, the nostalgia factor will blow you away.

Watched The Godfather for the first time in about a decade.  Still the best movie I've ever seen.

The Godfather 2 will get another look next weekend.

I watched Uncut Gems this weekend. The movie is a major beating. It’s basically a week long ride along with a gambling addict.

The only good part was Julia Fox.

Adam Sandler GIF

That jesse plemons movie on netflix. Slow and boring as shit but lily colins is a damn spinnet.

Saw that ABC was showing The Ten Commandments, so needless to say I stayed up and watched it.

I watched a bit of it and all I kept thinking was holy shit this has not aged well.

It's almost as if it is a myth or fairy tale.

and you’ll once again be reminded that 2 > 1

Watched Sand Castle last night.  About a soldier's experience in Iraq after the invasion in 2003.  I thought it was a pretty good portrayal of the average guys experience albeit a little bit Hollywood.

And the special effects were terrible.

I agree but if someone differs it doesn’t matter. Sublime vs monumental is a hard thing to quantify

It was fucking great.

Black '47.  Story surrounding treatment of Irish and the  British and Christian dumbfuckery during potato famine. So gritty, nice vengeance.

The Assistant on Hulu.  Trailer makes it look interesting...the movie itself was terrible.

Very surreal

I keep getting older and Anne Baxter stays the same age.

El Viejito Enrique (2021)

I enjoyed but kind of meh.  I thought the son was kind of terrible - perhaps I'm too expectant of the quiet, moody type.  Even just quiet and surly would have done.  This kid seemed just out of place.  Would have liked more of an edge in the flick.  Clever idea at the heart though. Just didn't move beyond that.

I don’t know. I’m not a believer but I think there are a lot of believers who are more influenced by that movie, and by A Charlie Brown Christmas, then by reading actual scripture.

But that aside, and Heston’s ham acting, I always enjoy the effects of turning the water blood red, of the burning hail stones, of the angel of death coming like a green fog. This was way before CGI and the effects were really solid for the time.

And what, you didn’t enjoy all the daughters of that one dude dancing for Moses to see which one could entice him into marriage? :)

Also, Yul Brynner and Edward G. Robinson were great.

He killed his son. Which seems to be worse.

That was the go-to move for the god of Abraham.

One of the best lines from All in the Family was when Edith was talking about Moses and she starts talking, if memory serves, about how he was left in a basket among the reeds and her story ends with "And he grew up to become Charlton Heston!"

Lol, that's all on you dipshit.

The Bad Batch (2016)…shouldve been called the Bad Movie amirite?

waste of cast with keanu and jason momoa

Zoe. With ewan mcgregor, lea seydoux, rashida jones, and still manages to be terrible.

some review said christina aguilera “brings star power to the film” lmao.

Watched The Highwaymen with Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson this afternoon.   It's a retelling of the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde.   I thought it was a decent movie.   Costner and Harrelson were good together.

The Tomorrow War. Sucked.

Paint by numbers remake of Alien and Aliens. It's all about family. The worst part was thinking it was over 30 minutes before it actually ended. Had I been watching alone, I would have turned it off.

The Lost Weekend (1945)

Jeez, what a lousy drunk.  Didn't particularly enjoy this, but glad I saw it.  I've never really been a particular student of Billy Wilder but he's obviously great and I think I need to line up some of his movies to get a better grip on him.

The story to me seemed a bit overly simple on initial viewing but after following up on the backstory (and thinking about my own experiences with folks who were a slave to the bottle) it rang a bit more true. The "New York" street scenes were cool.

JFC, talk about an understatement. Billy Wilder was a genius.

Double Indemnity, Stalag 17, Some Like it Hot, The Apartment, The Fortune Cookie and One, Two, Three are a great place to start.
