Anora - this won the Palme D’Or this year and has gotten great buzz from other fests. I loved it. It was funny, sad, scary, thoughtful, etc. It’s definitely a movie that will stick with you. It’s going to be in the mix this award season, especially for Mikey Madison.

Just got out of the theater with tears in my eyes for several different reasons. What a movie.

I think we know those reasons.

Soylent Green is... PEOPLE!

Here. What a snoozer. Had its moments (like Hanks being Hanks reacting to his kid being a ghost for Halloween) but not good. It was like being at an off Broadway concept play. The couple next to us left about halfway through.

Even the trailer is a bore.

As big a Hanks fan as I am, I set the bar very low and expect to be disappointed.

X. Tamer than I expected but I also didn’t expect the porn scenes from Brittany Snow so that was a plus. Not sure I’m going to bother with the other two in the trilogy, too many other horror movies to get to.

I posted this in the Halloween thread - Red Rooms might be my favorite horror film of the year - although it’s more of a suspense/thriller. Cannot recommend it enough.

If you're in the mood for some light hearted goofiness check out Despicable Me. Get high first. The minions constantly kicking each other's asses brings the lulz

You just now saw this movie?

Lamb, by A24. Set in Iceland, starring Noomi Rapace. Simple story and slow pacing but I can't get it out of my head. Maybe in part because the Ada character somewhat resembles my dog. Ada's complete innocence and the instinct to protect her made this worth a watch. Sad, haunting.

Spoiler

It still has me wanting a lamb hybrid creature.

Election (1999) with Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. This movie holds up so well over time. There are no pop culture references so it doesn’t feel  dated even though it’s 25 years old.

Finally saw Longlegs now that it’s available to rent. I dug it, put it in the good not great category. I can’t wrap my head around Alicia Witt as an old lady.

Saw this one last night.  Very modern editing techniques and storytelling.  Feels like a new generation of filmmaker.  Total mindfuck.  Loved it.

Has Snack Shack been discussed on this thread? Great early 90s coming of age movie. Def deserves to be in the conversation with The Way Way Back, Adventureland, etc.

Which Borden survives at the end? Alfred or Fallon?

I never saw this as ambiguous. I don't remember who-is-who name-wise but I thought the point was that the girl that visits him in prison right before he dies is his daughter.

I feel like wondering which one lives is unnecessarily complicating the film.

Watching Michael Clayton again for the 20th time.  Love this movie.  Great performances by Clooney, Lord Cornwallis, and the Ice Queen bitch.  And Sidney Pollock.

Finally got around to showing the 11 y/o the Three Amigos and I swear I've never heard him laugh as much during a movie, maybe in any 100 minute window of his life, than that movie. I've seen it a billion times but to see him watch it for the first time ever was incredible.

He wants to teach the 5 year old the amigo salute.

He wanted to run it back tonight and watch another comedy similar to that, any ideas on what I could introduce him to? We watched Bill and Ted, which he liked but figured there gotta be other options. Mentioned earlier he is a huge horror fan but not sure if there are "age appropriate comedies" for him before I turn him loose on the Porkys, Hardbodies, revenge of the nerds movies.

Watched Conclave and Heretic tonight.

Conclave is really good Oscar bait with amazing acting all around but isn’t quite the masterpiece I’ve heard it was. Still a great thriller and worth seeing.

Heretic took a bit to get going but I really enjoyed it overall. If you like religious horror you will love this. Hugh Grant was great.

Maybe Big Trouble in Little China?

A few I’ve seen recently:

The Substance - liked the first hour, bored with the second. Cronenberg she is not

Red Rooms - one of my favorite movies of 2024. Will not forget one particular court room scene.

madS - loved it. Quite a ride

Heretic - really disappointing. Hugh Grant was very good, but it was silly, one note and bereft of interesting ideas

Woman of the Hour - pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. I knew nothing about this story. Anna K has some chops

Rebel Ridge - man this movie needed an editor. Not bad but really sloppy

I think it warrants more discussion than that. So the core idea is Hillary dies without any explanation, and Bill is free to date babes and raise Chelsea?! I suspect Hillary fucking hates this movie.

Anora was predictably fantastic. Love Sean Baker’s work

Saw Anora tonight and thought it was great.  Mikey Madison was fantastic and carried the movie.  That ending was really something.

Flight movie - Borderlands with Kate and Kevin Hart.  I am a sucker for mindless sci-fi movies on a plane that I would generally never watch otherwise.  High and holy hell was this bad.

He just absolutly kills it in this movie.

I liked it, but not as much as I expected to. I've never seen Chloe East in anything before and thought she was great - the opening scene with her and Sophie Thatcher was hilarious. Hugh Grant was born to play a villain and I hope he does more of this in the future.

Spoiler

Did not see the point of Topher Grace's character at all. His scenes could've been cut with no impact to anything.

The Whale.  That was terrible.

"Two thumbs down." - Herman Melville

As is my usual, spent my day off yesterday watching movies. Woman of the Hour... very well done. AK outstanding as an actress and director. Monkey Man... my least favorite of the 4 I watched. Good action but not realistic and not really sure the point other than revenge is good. Wolfs... totally campy and I get why critics hated it. But you get Clooney and Pitt playing off each other, and I thought it was fun. Not every movie needs to be an award winner. Pig... totally unexpected from what I read in the synopsis. It was intriguing and worth it, IMO.

25th Hour. Not sure how I've never seen this given the Spike, PSH and NYC overlay. A little shaggy at times (Barry Pepper, the guy who plays the third friend, was distractingly bad when up against Norton and PSH). Tony Siragusa playing a Ukranian guy (lol), Clay Davis giving a couple sheeeiittts, Brian Cox doing Brian Cox things, Anna Paquin killing it. Loved it.  Maybe top 5 Spike for me

I love that one, too (I’m guessing you mean 25th hour), even if the story is a little 1980’s movie of the week.  It’s a good reminder of what excellent directing looks like.

No, no, I meant the super secret director's cut, 23rd hour (I kid, fuck me)

I watched Conclave and thought it was great. Excellent acting and photography and a good mystery. I’ve always been fascinated by the pope, cardinal, election process of the Catholic Church. It has been shown before in The Shoes of the Fisherman and Angels and Demons. I would also recommend Conclave. We need more movies like that.
