August 11Aug 11 We are heading to Paris today, so watched Before Sunset last night. I love that movie so much. When Delpy is on the boat, with the sun hitting her hair, I don't know if anyone has ever been more intoxicating. The scene in the car breaks me every time. A true masterpiece.
August 11Aug 11 Watched Rami Malek in The Amateur. Thoroughly enjoyed it. A little far fetched. Probably would have made a better limited series.
August 11Aug 11 Have we talked about A Desert yet? Don't think it'll be for a lot of people, but if you're a fan of the desert scenes in Lost Highway, Nocturnal Animals, and Too Old to Die Young, you might dig this

And I don't even see Michael listed in the cast, but whoever played him was definitely too good looking. I could see them uglying up Toby Kebbell a little to make a good Mick.
August 12Aug 12 I love how they just dropped a straight to streaming war of the worlds interpretation starring Ice Cube that no one asked for or seems to like even a little bit
August 12Aug 12 I saw two in the theater last week that seemed to get barely any promotion. The first was Oh, Hi. I decided to see it based on Molly Gordon as the lead and co-writer and I thought the logline sounded interesting...a couple goes on their first weekend away together and things go awry. Nothing I've heard about The Bear has ever caused me to want to watch it but I liked Gordon in the Animal Kingdom show on TNT. I thought it was just ok. The guy turns out to be kind of an asshole and the girl turns into a cross of this girl and Kathy Bates from Misery. The stuff played for laughs was pretty good but the tone kept going back serious and those parts didn't work as well for me. Then there was a deus ex machina fakeout ending but the actual ending hinted that everything was fine and they might stay together which didn't really make sense. Spoiler We did get to see Molly's tits and ass though so that was good.
August 12Aug 12 The second was She Rides Shotgun. I really liked the book by Jordan Harper and didn't even know it was being made into a movie. The story is about a guy who has a hit put on him, his ex and their daughter by an Aryan gang just as he's getting out of prison. Taron Egerton and the little girl playing his daughter were pretty good together. I was especially impressed with the girl showing both fear of and love for her dad just out of prison. There were some good landscapes and a pretty good chase scene. The ending wasn't as good as the book and went for more of a paint by numbers hollywood shootout. Overall I thought it was good not great.
August 12Aug 12 Author I watched "The Way Way Back" this weekend. Never heard of the movie before but it was a great coming of age movie. Sam Rockwell killed it in this movie.
August 12Aug 12 Went to see a movie tonight. One of those deals where the movie is a surprise. This was the movie and honestly it was thoroughly enjoyable. Good memories of all the places they showed in NYC that I used to see every day. The ramp that takes you down from 42nd to below street level at Grand Central reminded me of the year I spent commuting to the city from Stamford. Really good film and I like that they don't waste time on going right into the heart of the matter. I think several of you here will really enjoy this one.

You pay for a movie (presumably at a discount) but don’t know what movie or even how long you’re committed to watching? Do you at least know a genre, rating, or decade?

The tickets are discounted since Monday is a slow day for movies. I have a monthly pass so it doesn’t matter for me. The movies are usually pretty good. This one just had an odd ending, but everything else was really good.

August 14Aug 14 One of the best, if not the best, horrible movie ever put out by Hollywood. Also, I think I have read over the years that this movie was filmed near too much radioactivity and so many of the cast got cancer.
August 16Aug 16 The Assistant on paramount streaming. Stars Julia Garner. It has a 90+ critics rating on RT and just 25% from the general ratings. I don't know if I've seen that large of a split before. From reading a couple reviews I was prepared for it to be a "nothing happens" type of movie. As expected, Julia was a pleasure to watch for 90 minutes. The film's attention to detail was phenomenal. The cast was also excellent. Matthew Macfadyen made a very strong appearance.
August 16Aug 16 90s Essentials rewatch with the oldest daughter. As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster. Edited August 16Aug 16 by mdmost

August 17Aug 17 The Monkey Fucking hilarious. Highly recommend Same. Didn’t try to be something it’s not. Got creative with some of the edits/cuts. Leaned into the ridiculous premise and I thought it was well done all around.
August 18Aug 18 Been wanting to rewatch Inglorious Basterds and it was on one of the movie channels last night. Might be my favorite Tarrentino movie
August 19Aug 19 Finally watched Idiocracy. This site makes so much more sense to me now. So, you now know what we look like when we’re posting….

Prime brought it to my attention and I couldn’t remember anything about it. That was the most caricatured movie I think I’ve ever seen. It’s right up there with Batman, Dick Tracy, and Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man from that era. Then they threw in a PSA at the end about important it was to have a realistic depiction of the drug problem. That was quite an interesting use of my late night movie watching. I considered starting a thread about the crazy cinematography and costumes from that movie and that time. But here we are. Derka got the conversation started for us.

August 19Aug 19 I love Juice. The soundtrack is really good and I like how gritty it is as Tupac further loses touch with reality because he has the gun. One of my favorite things about New Jack City is one extra who goes for it when Nino Brown is busted by Ice T and he doesn't kill him. A guy in the background goes "give me the gun, I'll do it".
August 19Aug 19 Scouts guide to The Zombie Apocalypse is pretty fucking funny. Like Superbad with zombies.

A guy in the background goes "give me the gun, I'll do it". yeah i watched juice after NJC and it held up waaaaaay better. and it reminded me that tupac shakur was really just a brilliant theater kid who could have been a superstar actor (which you could argue is exactly what he was with his rap persona) has he not become one of the most famous musical artists of all time. quick bio for those who don’t know: tupac was a sensitive theater kid from nyc before he moved to the bay area as a teenager. that’s where he was really influenced to start rapping. it wasn’t until he got involved with death row that he started claiming LA, as well as his ultimate hang banger persona. his life was like the ultimate character acting.
August 20Aug 20 Eden. It was this week’s Monday night movie where Regal doesn’t tell you what it will be. It was interesting and it took me a bit to recognize Sydney Sweeney since she was playing a German woman. Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby were in it as well as Jude Law. Ron Howard directs it. It was a good one-off movie.
August 20Aug 20 The Amateur is a decent watch on a flight. Like if Jason Bourne was a computer nerd. The Accountant 2 was also pretty entertaining. Perfect role for Bernthal.
August 21Aug 21 Americana. Kind of a poor man's Coen brothers movie...I liked it. Sydney Sweeney as a stuttering waitress/aspiring country singer with a wardrobe that mostly hid her assets was a choice but I thought she was pretty good. Paul Walter Hauser especially and also Halsey were good as the other leads. Zahn McClarnon and Toby Huss were fun in small roles. There were some cool location shots too with New Mexico standing in for the Dakotas and Wyoming apparently.

I don’t know a whole lot about her, but I do gather that quite a bit of her popularity is her looks. I did think she was pretty good in her role in Eden though. August 23Aug 23 Don't Knock Twice (2016). Starbuck is completely out of place in this British horror. Even when she reconnects with her long lost British daughter. bloody hell, their house is haunted by a ghost with claws. The film doesn't seem aware how badly Starbuck sticks out, I think they didn't want the viewer to notice. It does an okay job with dark halls and jump scares, but strongly signals the twist at the end. Nonetheless, some of us will always watch anything British horror or that actress.
August 23Aug 23 I'm definitely biased, but this documentary was hysterical. After a few bong rips, 2 brothers see their family's birding field guide and decide to learn all the birds. Despite no knowledge or experience, they embark on a lower 48 big year in their shitty minivan, with hilarious interactions along the way. Shockingly well done.

I thought the main 5 in the ensemble were all really good. I'm coming around to the opinion that Sydney Sweeney can actually act. And it was the funniest I've ever seen Ana de Aramas. August 25Aug 25 Freaky Tales 2025, had been on my prime watch list but now free on hbo. Its like 80s comedy horror aesthetic with Tarantino vibes. We enjoyed it. Fun and bloody. Really enjoyed Freaky Tales. Kill Bill set in the bay.
August 25Aug 25 Author This movie had a twist that I wasn't expecting. There were a lot of layers to peel off in this movie that make for interesting discussions.
August 25Aug 25 LA Confidential Wife jumped when Vincennes meets his demise. Me: It's OK, I've seen it at least 10 times and it's still that way for me. So many great lines, but one that applies so well to someone fucking up: I wouldn't trade places with Edmund Exley right now for all the whiskey in Ireland.
