Saying Hollywood is out of ideas on the heels of One Battle, Sinners, Marty Supreme and Weapons is really something.

That is a sad list

Just saw “Is This Thing On?”. Bradley Cooper directed (and a supporting role) with Will Arnett and Laura Dern. My wife picked it. Interesting subject when your marriage is facing some challenges. It was fine. Nothing more.

Seyfried’s acting in this was pretty good. Sweeney was, well, she did what her fans want to see. She got naked and that’s about it. Her acting in Christy and Eden was actually good. The only part of this where her acting was above par was when she was angry in the 2nd half of the film. I hope for her sake she finds some way to be in movies where she doesn’t have to get naked for anyone to show up and watch it because hoo boy she is not going to age well.

Agree with you on both Seyfried and Sweeney in the Housemaid. It's a shame they didn't use Sweeney better. I thought she was good in Americana this year in addition to the two you mentioned.

Wife and I saw it this afternoon. We both liked it quite a bit, but agreed that it could have easily been 30 minutes shorter.

Saw it yesterday. Wife and sister loved it. I thought it was too long. I also didn't get the point of the film but it was later explained to me that I should have paid closer attention to the animated sperm that won the race to fertilize the egg at the beginning of the film, and how it did so. None of the main characters were particularly like-able. It garners almost solid 100s on metacritic, with one of the few sub-100 scores coming from Aus Chron.

Marty Supreme is a ride!

Casting was in the bag on this one.

the ping pong cage dude is that homeless man that went viral with the radio voice?

or am I wrong?

Marty Supreme was...something. It was too long and I didn't love it, but the acting was great all around and there were some fun cameos. I was especially surprised at how decent Kevin O'Leary was (although, from my understanding, he was basically playing himself). I don't watch Shark Tank and know very little about him so I had to look up whether or not he'd acted before. His line where he says

"I was born in 1601. I'm an immortal vampire" had me lol. It was so random.

I didn't recognize Penn Jillette. Also, I thought Wally was the actor who played Avon Barksdale until I looked it up after.

I do think this role will win Timmy C his Oscar.

I left this movie. I was rooting for the monkey to wreck everyone and he was batting a 1000 and going hard in the paint when I walked out. I think that @Nivek would be team monkey for this one.

Man, I loved Marty Supreme. That was a great film. I'm still working through the meaning of it all, but just as a... big episodic adventure, that same drive from the other Safdie films but with a different flavor to the anxiety, all wrapped around a story of youth and corrosive ambition. It was funny, it was exciting, Chalamet's performance was perfect and pulled the whole thing together, there were so many little moments and they all came so quickly. It was not at all the movie I was expecting from the trailers. I'm trying to decide how much of this has to do with the period and setting but it most reminds me of Inside Llewyn Davis, except with a completely different kind of asshole as a main character and a different tempo. Or even, this is Inside Llewyn Davis at 23 - when the ambition and ego is still has all of it's edge and none of its maturity, when you can spring right back up from a punch to the gut, when the people who love you haven't given up on you yet, when you're still convinced that the world will know you for who you know that you are destined to be.

I assumed this would be shitty but was hoping it might be fun bad. Sounds like it is just bad bad?

Love this review. I finally saw it today, absolutely ripped.

Watched the Dollars Trilogy for the millionth time, but for the first time on Arrow’s 4K discs. Absolutely incredible.

When the score goes into overdrive in the final showdown, peak movie watching.

Based upon John Bishop's life, the good news is Bishop and his wife are still together.

I came into the bedroom and the wife was watching the movie with Meg Ryan and David Duchovny.

My recommendation is instead of making my mistake and watching that film you should go find the monkey from Primate because what happens to you next would be less painful and over quicker.

Cop Land still rules. Stallone, De Niro, Keitel, and Liotta at the height of their powers. 90% of The Sopranos cast. Great Springsteen songs too.

Available on Paramount+.

Never seen it. Have to give it a run.

Wife and I forced the daughter (15) to watch the Princess Bride, in honor of Reiner's passing.

She claimed she didn't like it, and anytime she would say some reason why she didn't like it I would reply "Truly you have a dizzying intellect" or "Inconceivable!"

Plane flight review: Caught Stealing. Aronofsky does a Guy Ritchie film. Great cast with some surprises. A little ridiculous but (bloody) fun.

Just saw and loved this. I read the short story back when the book came out and thought it was fine, but the movie does a great job of bringing it to life. It was a bit on the nose with the central theme (although it's fair to assume we're a nation of idiots who need to be beaten over the head with the point to get it) but still a lovely film. And if you're a Mike Flanagan fan, a ton of his mainstay actors make cameos.

Thanks. Didn’t know there was a movie. I really liked the short story.

I’m settling in to start the movie (it’s on Hulu).

Wow was I out of the loop on this one. I had no idea it was King much less Flanagan. Is it scary? And where did they dig up Mia Sara?

On Saturday I watched the King’s Speech for umpteenth time. I like the talk talk talk, talk talk talk movies. Cringy, funny and heartwarming.

I followed up with Zombieland: Double Tap. Monster Trucks (tipping hazards) crushing zombies. Thomas Middleditch as a near carbon copy of Columbus. And Zoey Deutch - she looks like her mom. What a fun flick.

My wife and I rotate movie night picks.

For my night on Sunday, we watched the Arrow 4K of Deep Red (Argento, 1975). First time I’ve watched this since I was a kid, and I’d forgotten/not realized how nonsensical most of it is. But man that score is incredible, and there are a few moments where Argento turns on the magic and it all comes together. For those interested, it’s a beautiful 4K, although the lack of sound sync and occasional Italian dubbing is certainly distracting.

For wife’s night last night, 1998 Great Expectations. Cuaron directing. Paltrow, Hawk, De Niro. Let me just say, this is not a good movie, but prime Gwyneth is a real risk it all proposition for me.

Couldn’t you just get by with the coochie candle and save a lot of hassle?

What is the hottest Paltrow? I may go Pepper Potts.

Up until a few days ago, I would have said Talented Mr. Ripley, no question. Also has the benefit of being a terrific film. Now I’m afraid I might have to say Great Expectations (a very bad film)

Promising Young Woman.

It was part of the Focus Features collection. I bought the set because it had Eternal Sunshine, Lost in Translation and a few other films I liked.

I don’t know how this movie got 90+ on RT. Formulaic and predictable. The girl was cute though.
