May 27, 20205 yr Birdy was one of my fav lesser known Nicholas Cage movies. Valley Girl is pretty bad ass but not lesser known.

May 30, 20205 yr Are Rio Bravo and El Dorado the same movie? John Wayne is the lead in both. Howard Hawks directed both. Alcoholic sheriff in his over head in both films. Special thanks to Robert Mitchum for making men’s suede boots cool. Pulling them off you son of a bitch. Rest In Peace.

I also give the edge to Rio Bravo, one of my favorite westerns. Dean Martin was totally believable as the drunk cop. El Dorado is good too with a better score, it's more of a hootenanny comedy.

Not an easy call, but I can't say I disagree. I prefer Mitchum over Martin as the washed-up sheriff, but give me Angie Dickinson in the "female role." And, as you note, Rio Bravo has Walter Brennan, who although he apparently was a miserable prick in real life, was a great character actor. Rio Lobo finishes in third, but is another worthwhile movie in the same vein.
May 30, 20205 yr Tonight's edition of The Last Drive In With Joe Bob Briggs consisted of a double feature of Dead Heat, a buddy cop/zombie movie starring Joe Piscopo and Treat Williams, and the life affirming Italian film Cannibal Holocaust.

May 31, 20205 yr Blinded by the Light (2019) Well meaning, and they let the Boss songs go on forever, but pretty light fare. I'm just kind of crotchety old fucker, and I think unless a music movie absolutely jibes with my own view of the music, it's just not going to work.
May 31, 20205 yr We watched City Slickers last night. That movie takes on a different meaning when you’re in your late 40s compared to seeing it as a teenager. It’s a lot more relatable. Still funny. And I had no idea the son was played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

June 2, 20205 yr The Vast of Night on Prime. Well worth the 90 minutes. I hope the streaming channels keep pumping out these low budget indie films. This couldn't have cost $5M to make.
June 2, 20205 yr Back to School. I know a lot of people of certain age love this movie. *Hot take to follow*: Rodney Dangerfield is great of course, but he’s one of the few bright spots. I realize it’s an important film as it inspired classics like Old School, but the son isn’t likeable and the female lead just didn’t do it for me. The hot water tub scene snorkeling scene was pretty funny. “Say he’ll to my nieces”. Should have gone for a hard R rating and increased the debauchery.

June 4, 20205 yr Author I rewatched Lords of Dogtown and somehow liked it a lot better than the first time I watched it when it first came out. Highlight of the film was Heath Ledger, I forgot how great he was at acting.
June 4, 20205 yr Revisited Carnival of Souls on HBOMax. The acting is hammy as hell and I have no idea why it works but it does.
June 4, 20205 yr Aloha What the hell happened to Cameron Crowe? This movie was awful. The scenery was nice though.

June 5, 20205 yr Vast of Night on Prime. Set in the 1950s New Mexico (filmed in Whitney and Hillsboro) sci-fi, Twilight Zone, aliens film. Wonderful cinematography, good dialogue, and acting. Just an overall unique feel and vibe Eerier than scary. Would recommend.

June 6, 20205 yr Just fired up Big Lights, Big City. Michael J. Fox, Phoebe Cates, and Kiefer Sutherland. I think movies about the 80's are better than movies from the 80's, Edit: I bailed. Sexy Beast is a much better choice. Mr. French's second best movie. Maybe Ben Kingsley's best role. Edited June 6, 20205 yr by billfromlaketravis
June 6, 20205 yr Tetsuo: The Iron Man. If David Lynch and David Cronenberg had a Japanese baby who grew up to be a filmmaker this would be the movie that baby made.
