Their Finest - Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighly

A British WWII movie within a movie. Plot is Arterton is hired as a scriptwriter for "morale" films and stumbles on a sweet Dunkirk story about 2 sisters which turns out to be about 90% false. But this is the movies. Claflin is the lead writer and Nighly is the pompous, yet talented "name" actor in his waning days. It jumps from realtime to scenes from the film. Really good story, well made.

All That Heaven Allows (1955)

Great over the top technicolor Douglas Sirk melodrama.  Jane Wyman and the Rock have to deal with asshole yankees, and cocktails in tiny glasses.

Just watched Defiance, again, on Netflix. Love that one.  Pretty damn beyond impressive keeping 1200+ people alive in the damn forest for over 3 years while be hunted like feral hogs.   Damn

It is always on my netflix recommended list but I've never seen it. I'll give it a shot

It’s pretty damn badass.  Naturally some cheeky Hollywood shit, but the story is awesome behind it.

Eurovision, the Will Ferrell on Netflix movie.

Had no idea Amy McAdams was so moley.

Live and Let Die

My dad took six-year old me to see this in the theater. It was great seeing the intros with naked women to all these movies. Also, the Un-cola guy scared the shit out of me!

The full Dean Martin Roast is on YouTube. Wow. Rickles just kills, and what a cast. Orson Welles, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Angie Dickinson, Joe Naismith, Muhammad Ali, Bob Hope, and Barry Goldwater and Hebert Humphrey, because what why not?

The Devil All the Time - Loved the book.  It didn't really work as a movie.  Seemed very episodic and just meandered from one plot point to the next without feeling very cohesive.

Archenemy. Interesting concept but the lack of a budget handcuffed the film. 2/5 stars.

Larceny, Inc. 1942 Edward G. Robinson gangster/comedy.  Eddie, Edward Brophy and in his best performance ever, Broderick Crawford are a trio of fresh out the pen ex-cons trying to break into a bank but wind up running a wildly successful cover business. Anthony Quinn plays the heavy. Also features a very young Jackie Gleason. Excellent.

Man, I hoped it'd be good.

I will watch just about anything with Edward G. Robinson in it.

Hotel Artemis on Prime.

Fits into the John Wick universe with the criminal hospital so it’s not wholly original but it’s a pretty good waste of two hours.

I didn't see a thread for it, so I'll post here. I rented and watched Greenland last night with my wife and another couple. It stars Gerard Butler and involves a comet coming way, way too close to earth, unexpectedly. I had low expectations but the preview looked fun. I'm not going to call it a classic or anything, but it's a fun movie to watch if you're watching it with other people. Pretty intense for a popcorn movie.

Dad??

I was just coming here to post the same thing.  I too, rented Greenland last night.  It was one of the few movies I wanted to see pre-Covid so I didn’t mind throwing down $20 to stream.  Like most in its category, it dragged some in the middle, but overall worth the money.  And intense is the perfect word for it.  The overall “anarchy” feel of it was tough to watch unfold.  Unfortunately, it’s probably how things would actually go down in a similar event.

I enjoyed the ending as well.  You don’t see many disaster movies with that type of ending.

Overall, probably a B.

David Bautista is underrated.

Just watched the Trial of the Chicago 7. Sorkin is a genius.

Driven 2018 film about the John DeLorean drug deal. Stars Jason Sudekis, Lee Pace, Judy Greer and Michael Cudlitz. Pretty entertaining.

3 pretty good ones I've watched lately:

Cool little sci-fi flick.

Screenplay got nominated for an Oscar and yeah, it was really well-written.  Jessica Chastain's tits should have gotten a best supporting nom.

This one just absolutely blew me away.

Fatman ... want my $1.85 from Redbox back ... <insert obviously Redbox joke here>

About 15 years ago I had the chance to fly in a B-17 and it was fucking awesome. Thankfully, nobody was shooting at us.

Flying in a B-17 or a B-24 is on my bucket list.

It was awesome. I had my head sticking out of the top of the plane while we were flying. I went up in the Liberty Belle. About 10 years ago, or less, it had a terrible fuel leak that caused a fire and the plane was nearly lost. It is being restored, again. That's a picture of the plane that I "stole" from their website.

Day for Night (1973).  Truffaut's movie about making movies.  I think I liked the idea of the flick more than each minute of the flick, but it was interesting.  And Jackie Bisset.

I was prepared to fly back in 2018 out of Tyler but they were grounded because of the weather. I was out of town in 2019. Covid canceled the event in 2020. Hopefully they will make the East Texas circuit in 2021.

Watched a Bogart film last week titled "We're No Angels".  HB doing comedy, who knew?  Worthy of a rewatch if I see it listed again in the guide.

You didn't tell him.

He knows already.

Excellent flick. May be Aldo Ray's best performance.

Halos for everyone including Adolf.

Watched that last night.  Really good, but it pisses me off when they fictionalize facts.  It was completely unnecessary in this case because everything else was so good that it did zero to improve the movie.

Got around to “Hillbilly Elegy”.  Got horrible reviews from critics, but well received by the general public.  As someone with more than a little experience in treating addiction, I think this should be required viewing for parents.  And grandparents.

Immortal (2011) , with Henry Cavill, and Mickey Rourke playing the most Mickey Rourke role ever

Movie is indulgent in CGI and costume sets and hyper-graphic design, but indulgences are fun

Midnight Sky on Netflix. I think there could have been a good movie in there, but it fell way short for me

Rare Exports - Finnish Christmas “horror” film. Pretty good for what it is. Santa is buried in ice and wants to eat your kids.

It was 2 subpar movies mixed into 1

Possessor.  Brandon Cronenberg has just as much weird shit in his head as his dad.  Worth a look.

Did you read the book?

The Bridge on the River Kwai. Such an all timer.

The Damned Don't Cry (1950) - Joan Crawford claws her way up the social ladder and eventually fucks around with the wrong mofo.  Good stuff.

I've been on a classic movie kick. In the past few days I've watched:

The African Queen

The Maltese Falcon

Rebel Without a Cause

I am in the process of watching The African Queen now between football games. First time to watch.

It's great. The leech scene is cringey.

Not big on Rebel Without a Cause, huh?
