So were Christina Applegate's.

Black Widow.  Very meh.

You weren't impressed with the superhero landing pose?

The Wanderers (1979)

It's a mess like lots of coming of age flicks, but it's knocking on the door of greatness.  For some reason, doesn't have the resonance with me that Diner and American Graffiti have, but fuck if you haven't seen this you should.  Weird juxtapositions of tone and humor -- you can sense some of the humor that would come years later in Kaufman's "The Right Stuff.  Interesting history, and how the movie "The Warriors" hurt this one at the box office.

Is that Ken Wahl? Loved him in Wiseguy.

Yep.  Wiseguy was a great show.  I want to say Grossburger from Stir Crazy was also in that movie.

Here Today - Billy Crystal, Tiffany Haddish. An old Jewish writer (Crystal) on an SNL type show meets a young black performer (Haddish) and they strike up a close friendship. I'm not a Haddish fan and I'm not sure if she stepped up her game to match Crystal or he brought out the best in her, but this was by far her best on screen performance. Very dusty, high allergy alert.

She's legitimately sketchy since hooking up with Jesse James. Ewwww.

The Unforgivable. Not great, not horrible. Sandra’s still hot.
I came here to post the same - nearly verbatim.

District 9 and Elysium are on rotation on the Starz channels. Both directed by Neill Blomkamp. Haven’t seen his entire catalog although I understand it’s not all to be celebrated.

Also Sharlto Copley is a very convincing wuss/sympathetic alien convert in District 9 yet a fairly convincing bad guy in Elysium

Really good.

Yeah what ever happened to him?

The Bridge on the River Kwai.  What an awesome movie.  It won best picture in the year I was born and is still a great one to watch.  One tidbit I wasn’t aware of was that the French novelist who wrote the book it was based on (who didn’t even speak English) was originally credited with the screenplay and awarded the Oscar.  The screenplay was actually written by two Americans living in the UK who were blacklisted.  They were subsequently awarded the Oscar posthumously.  Well deserved Oscars for Guinness and Hayakawa.  Also fuck you if you denigrate it because of its historical inaccuracies.

Watched a rather dark version of A Christmas Carol with Guy Pearce as Scrooge that was actually a mini-series on bbc, thought it was interesting and well done.

Boiling Point was pretty good. It's an evening in a London restaurant following the head chef and staff over the course of one evening. What's really impressive is that it filmed as one take (at least I didn't see any place where the filming stopped) and its like a play done in 3D where the stage is moving with the camera.

Weaning ourselves off the the Covid quarantine Christmas movie binge, we just finished Wind River on Netflix.

Directed and written by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone; Hell or High Water)

Outstandingly good.

Well.  Fuck you for even adding this qualifier.  It's madness to do so.

Madness.

Available on Apple+ (or Kodi..)

Watched Breezy last night, an early Eastwood directorial with William Holden and young nubile Kay Lenz.  It was alright but Ms. Lenz tits were glorious.

Based on a novel, and I believe screenplay, by Richard Price, who is a frequent David Simon collaborator.

Yep.  In the DVD I got (from Netflix), there is a great bonus short film called Richard Price's Bronx or something like that.  It's just Richard Price driving around the Bronx and talking about the film and the settings and the people of the Bronx he knew.  As you can imagine, he's the kind of guy who would want to hang out with for a while, and it's a really fun bonus.  Certainly want to try to read a few of his novels now.

Saw Snowpiercer was leaving Netflix on 1/31 and been meaning to see it. Enjoyed it okay.

I avoided it for so long because the plot was fantastical.  Thought I was too dumb for my time.  But once you let go of that hangup, it's a great movie.

Last Black Man in San Francisco. Interesting movie. Makes you think

The Station Agent. Upon my second viewing of the flick, I'm no longer afraid of midg.. uh, vertically challenged folk. Peter Dinklage is a fine little actor.

Midnight Cowboy.  The theme song is fantstic.

The ugly introduction that shows Joe's young life was filmed in Big Spring, which is so very fucking appropriate.

The Getaway with Steve McQueen, Slim Pickens and Ali McGraw tonight on TCM.  Filmed in Texas.  Showband of the Southwest makes an appearance during the parade.
