Where are y'all getting wood for your smoker?

Specifically looking for properly aged Post Oak that I can pick up and load myself.

Central Texas preferred, but willing to drive a few hours for a good source.

This won't help, but I have a friend with land and a lot of trees.  I go out there and help him cut/split a few times a year, and he keeps me in free cooking wood.

In a pinch, I run by academy and pick up a box of post oak splits.  They run about $18.  They're kiln-dried, but the moisture content is in the high teens, they burn well, and smell great.

Just this Saturday (they are only open for pickup from 12-6 on SAturdays) I went to Woodchuck firewood, which is where the old Harley's firewood was at Anderson Mill and 183.  I'd get there early.  When I got there, they were all out of oak, but had plenty of nice cured split pecan (I grabbed a 2x4 stack for $80).  I'll use it for my smoker and my fireplace, so it's all good.

I've used Dwayne Dougherty Firewood in Oak Hill but I only buy about an 1/8th of a chord at a time.

it's amazing how much oak is available for free when your neighborhood gets hit by a tornado, you just have to cut it up yourself

I vaguely remember reading that kiln dried wood is usually too dry and it doesn't impart as much flavor as seasoned wood.  I guess you could probably negate that a bit if you leave your kiln dried wood outside and let it get a bit of moisture content.

I checked the stuff I bought with a meter.  High teens isn't bad at all.  It's not as good as the white oak I get from my friend, but it does pretty well in a pinch.

We lost a couple of small trees last year, and I've been drying the resultant splits since April or so.

I drove down to Oak Hill last year after Harley’s closed and I recall thinking they were really expensive.  I think it ended up like $2 a stick.

There's a guy in brushy creek who sells it out of his backyard. Logs, smoker chunks. He does pretty good business. Been going to him for a decade.

Anybody with a chain saw is welcome to come clean up on a couple of my freeze damaged oaks near Liberty Hill.  Way more wood than I can use.

i smoked er with my wood if you know what i mean and if you do please explain it to me, I'm still a virgin

I'm sure cooking logs, splits, chunks etc are more abundant down there than where I live but also as an fyi most Ace hardware stores carry B&B brand wood and charcoal, and if they don't have in stock you can usually online order for store pickup in a few days.

Y'all are fucking awesome. Much appreciated.

I get my oak when I have to clear a dead or dying post oak on my place.  I have one or two that need to come down in the next week or two.  If you're willing to drive to Navasota, I'll share.

My pecan came from a couple of trees that were damaged in a storm on my dad's place last year, and I am starting to run low.  I need to find some more soon.  My mesquite, which I need to replenish, came from the property where the city that I used to work for has a couple of water wells.  I need to find out if I can go back out there and "help them clear" some more mesquite.

Seriously - Academy.

relieved to hear the old harvey's spot is still a wood yard.  i was wondering what i was going to do.  i dont have a smoker but probably have enough wood for 5-10 fires and that's where i've always bought my firewood.

My front yard.

My backyard. Seriously, both my front and backyard. Shit is everywhere and free minus the labor, but my dad always goes Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the chainsaw when he visits so it's never something I have to purchase.
