November 13Nov 13 Waymo has begun deploying its driverless cars on freeways, the next step in autonomous vehicle expansion. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/nov/12/waymo-robotaxis-freeways?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter-20251113 Sources: Edited November 13Nov 13 by pacman
November 13Nov 13 Popular Post Waymo can’t possibly be worse or more dangerous than the worst 10% of human drivers. Also, the sooner semi trucks are driverless the better. Over the 40 years of my driving life semis have gone from a nuisance to an existential threat.

They are among the best drivers -- and even among the most courteous -- in downtown.

November 13Nov 13 Waymos should blink their driver side headlight at each other when they pass by, like a motorcycle salute or a jeep wave.

November 13Nov 13 Here's Waymo avoiding accidents ... I would not have been able to avoid all of these:

November 13Nov 13 Does this mean there will be fewer Waymos blocking traffic for a drop off / pick up downtown?

November 13Nov 13 There were 6 of them at my vonlane drop off. I expected totally fuckery but they managed the traffic jam better than humans could.

If I had his money, I wouldn't be interacting with fucking incels of all people, and I would be generating my own erotica with real people. I probably wouldn't be on social media either.

I hear ya. "Sending out cringy AI erotica for incels on the social media platform that he also owns" is an absolute requirement for me. That, of course, is why I am loyal to this platform and @immamac

November 14Nov 14 They are pretty much all I take now if I can help it. Highways will be great but airports will be the game changer.

November 14Nov 14 Probably an unpopular take but I have yet to witness a Waymo car make a mistake or at the very least drive worse Than your average human. On the other hand, those SUVs driving around riverside/35 are gonna kill someone. Cant recall the name. Edited November 14Nov 14 by CrownKing
November 14Nov 14 out on my bike, I'll see dozens of them, and they are 100% more consistent than a soccer mom in a huge SUV just texting away. Which got me to thinking about how much shit the really obnoxious bikers will try and get away with once all cars on the road are autopilot. The cars have a 360 field of vision and software that errs on the side of caution rather than "fuck em, I have the right of way". Once they figure out the cars will never hit 'em....goddamn they might never stop at a stop sign again.

I got stuck behind one that let multiple cars force merge in front of them.

November 14Nov 14 We were in a black cab in London a couple weeks ago and the cabby was confident that the cabs were a safe job for a while. His theory was basically that the self driving cars are way too passive to work in London. He was telling us this as he was (very) aggressively navigating his way through a nasty traffic jam, so it was compelling at the time. Interesting to see that the code is being changed to address that.
November 14Nov 14 Waymo is going to win the driverless car race. They may not win the driverless semi race, but the race to be the company that owns/sells the most autonomous passenger vehicles is over, Waymo won. Invest accordingly.
November 14Nov 14 I like the experience and fully embrace its future. My only complaint was my car needing to merge onto a busy street. I sat for at least 20 minutes waiting. I didn’t know what to do. I called people to ask. Horns blaring behind me. A few cars behind us passed in on the shoulder to merge. At one point I was going to get out and walk. It was actually pretty stressful. I’m sure they can tweak this and they need to.

So they basically just punch each other all car ride until they start screaming at each other and then I have to scream at them to stop. It's a fun game we play called "fight constantly".

I guess Austin because half of everyone I encounter on the roads I invariably end up yelling “GOOOOO!@&$#” would be hilarious to see these things in Houston edit: ooooh, would love an update on how this is going (from June) “Its vehicles are also operating on portions of major highways like I-10, I-45 and I-69.” https://www.khou.com/article/tech/waymo-driverless-car-houston/285-5a7bfe11-1484-489e-ba03-619653cf5315 Edited November 14Nov 14 by UTexasFight

My first waymo experience (in SF, like 18 months ago), I took one as a fun experience to go from lunch to an office which was 1.5 mile away and like 7 minutes in SF. The Waymo got stuck behind a semi with blinkers on and got confused and couldn't figure out how to get out of the quagmire. I waited for like 10 minutes and putzed around on email because I had to anyways, but at that point I had to get out and walk or I was going to be late to my meeting. I was in said meeting for like 30 minutes when I got a notication from the waymo app "your waymo has reached it's destination, thanks for riding" or whatever.
