Whitesnake - Fare Thee Well, David Coverdale Retires

Featured Replies

Gott give the man credit for retiring when he wanted to.  More of a fan of the Deep Purple days, but cool nonetheless.

Celebrate In Love GIF by HBO Max

No he don't know where he's going
But, he sure knows where he's been
Hanging on the promises
In songs of yesterday
And he's made up his mind
He ain't wasting no more time

RIP, Tawny.

It was probably best for him that they were only married briefly.  She turned out to be a bit odd.

Whitesnake is easy to write off as just another 80s hair metal band, but they have a real legacy back to 70s hard rock. I love the original version of this one:

Check out that bass! They evolved and had their hair years, and Vai certainly took them in a different direction. But they were just one of the best guitar bands ever and a helluva frontman. Enjoy your golden years Dave.

I have never been able to take David Coverdale seriously. But respect for giving us Tawny Kitaen.

Wasn't tawny with Robin Crosby first?

My top 5 Whitesnake songs. Honestly,  only like the 3 primary 80s albums.

Sailing Ships

The Gambler

Crying in the Rain

Judgement Day

Still of the Night

Back in my partying days, I used to go toobing every summer down on the Guadalupe to kick off the school year.  This carried on until way longer than it should have.  We would camp at this place called "O. Henry's Hideaway."  There was a guy there who ran karaoke for the campers on Saturday nights.  You couldn't play pool in the O. Henry rec room because this guy's sleeping bag and all his possessions occupied said table.   I asked O. Henry's wife about it once and she grudgingly said he was the son of one of their great business associates.  But the associate had since died, and they didn't quote know how to get rid of the aimless son.

Anyhow, Mr. Karaoke fucking lived for Whitesnake.  Being the karaoke host, he took it upon himself to make sure that not just one song of the night, but like every third song was Whitesnake/Deep Purple/David Coverdale.  And this wasn't so the camp guests could be cajoled into singing them.  Heeeellll  naw.  He knew if he wanted it done properly he had to do it himself.  This guy would come out in full 80s moussed hair, tight leather pants (it was August in Texas), and studded belt and sing every god, damned, one of the songs.  This was late 90s/early 2000s.  It was as if in his mind a talent scout from 1986 was going to come back in time to O. Henry's Hideaway and whisk him away to the Whisky-A-Go-Go and the Sunset Strip.  Like his commitment was 1000%.  You have not lived until you've drifted to sleep to the dulcet tones of "In the Still of the Night" after a long down of pounding cool ones on the river.

So thank you David Coverdale for inspiriting my all time favorite karaoke experience.

Deep Purple Mark III and IV. Greatness, even though Glenn Hughes was the best singer.

I never was a big Whitesnake fan when they were all the rage, heavy rotation on MTV and shit with Tawny Kitaen videos every twelve minutes. Too much silly commercial glam pop show-off metal for my taste. Though I saw that version live once with Steve Vai on guitar and it was at least fun. David's lyrics were always cringey.

But a decade or so back I went on one of my deep dives looking through their earlier stuff and a lot of it is quite tasty.  That was before he started stealing the band members music, re-doing the songs, and replacing those guys with more screen-ready long hair guitar gymnastic types. They once had Mel Galley from Trapeze in the band, one of my all timer favorites. But the earlier versions had some good stuff in it.

*Robbin...can't forget the superfluous B. Yes, started dating in high school. Crosby was HIV + and later ODd on heroin. Tawny was also on the Out Of The Cellar cover and of course in Bachelor Party with Tom Hanks. Apparently Hollywood wasn't impressed so she had to return to being a video vixen. She was also later married to Angels pitcher Chuck Finley. There's a crazy story about her stomping on his foot with her stilleto while he was driving. I also remember reading that when pitching on the road they played a Whitesnake song on the PA to troll Chuck edit - found it

Quote

Last week at Comiskey Park, the White Sox played the Whitesnake song, "Here I Go Again," when Chuck Finley and his Cleveland teammates took the field before a game. This was a subtle dig at Finley, who is in the middle of a divorce from his wife, Tawny Kitaen, the "actress" best known for having appeared in Whitesnake videos.

  Chuck Finley
A subtle musical poke at Chuck Finley cost a Comiskey Park music director his job.

This so offended some sensitive souls that the White Sox felt the need to apologize profusely to Finley and fire the music director, Joe Stephen, responsible for playing the song. Which is amazing on two counts. One, that anyone would take the situation so seriously. And two, that anyone with the White Sox could even recognize a Whitesnake song when it played.

I honestly remember her just as much from her ridiculous brawls with Finley than I do from the video. Which given my age when "Here I Go Again" came out, is saying something, because that video definitely, uh, captivated me.

Yeah I was pretty spellbound by those videos as well...

Went to Cancun last summer with a group of about 10 friends, one of the guys is almost 50, divorced and is raking in the dough from his business. He has a GF/ borderline sugar baby about 28 and a smoking body ( especially after the cupgrade he bought). Anyway the group takes an excursion to Isla Mujeres and nobody is feeling any pain on the boat ride back to shore...she proceeds to treat the boat like the hood of a Jaguar, which all the husbands appreciated.  One mentioned to her it was like Tawny and she acted like that was the highest compliment she'd ever heard. I guess she's a SB with an old soul.

If you can ignore the TikTok effects, he described her as a “36 hours a day attention needer”.  He could have said attention whore, but he’s too polite

Wow, that is super diplomatic.   Of course, he could've said, "I married her because she was hotter than a French whore on nickel night, and I knew what I was getting into but still wanted to get into it anyhow.  Wink wink, nudge nudge!"

Posh English filter

he should head over to west London and play king George for a while in Hamilton.  That would be an interesting interpretation.
