The Diplomat (Netflix) - Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell

Searched and didn’t find a thread, just sporadic mentions in the Netflix meta thread (which is awful for discussion). The show deserves its own thread.

Season 1 trailer provided for anyone unfamiliar with the show who might be interested in starting it. There are 3 seasons available now, so probably best not to read beyond this point if you haven’t seen all of them.

Curious what others think. I like the show quite a bit and think a lot of the characters are well written. Especially like Stuart, Eidra, Dennison, and Todd Penn.

I get a little tired of Hal at times, but I think that’s supposed to be the case. Kate and Hal seemed to have a dead marriage from the start that existed purely for political and career reasons, so I enjoy the show more when they aren’t forcing themselves to be together and the other plots can be front and center.

The second half of season 3 was great. The coverup hits a little close to home with the current political landscape, but I enjoyed the different characters’ involvement and some of their reactions and moral struggles with it all (or seemingly lack thereof).

what's amazing to me is that cahn (creator/runner) & her writers have managed to create a pocket universe 'that works' where the uk is subservient and secondary on the global stage to the point that 2 false flag ops especially the 2nd one here at the end of s3 'seem plausible' within the political/global situation of this timeline

in our timeline russian subs don't get lost anymore - even with red october 'caterpillar drive' technology, should it exist, and should it be operational - the 5 eyes alliance knows where they are and at what depth at all times

+++

s3 featured 2 glitches in it's matrix - in both cases it feels like cahn+team did not have s3 figured out when they put s2 in the can, necessitating some pivots:

- roylin's suicide

- kate & austin's failed hookup replaced by.....

- callum the 'mi6' nuclear sub analyst backchannel to the 'cia' around 'mi6' also appears out of nowhere and conveniently happens to be kate's new fuckbuddy

in our timeline the sigint orgs (nsa, gchq, etc.) don't have 'backchannels'

all minor, and forgivable, but detected and noted as likely necessary to make this pocketverse "work" in 8 episodes

lost started winging it at about this point (end of s3), and man in the high castle suffered for doing the same thing at every season transition

i hope this team keeps it together so that s4+ are watchable by husbands and wives together and equally enjoyed

The wife loves this show for some reason. I like it enough to stick with it, but it's pretty goofy.

While Russell has a decent body for her age (mainly legs, small boobs) her face has never struck me as overly attractive.  It's pretty interesting how every male in the cast wants to bone her, has boned her or is next in line.  Seems there would be easier affairs to have with more attractive ladies than the ambassador/Second Lady with all the security and paparazzi buzzing around her 24/7.

I also had a problem watching Dennison without expecting him to hobble around on goat hooves like he did in Carnival Row.

Bradley Whitford is always good on something with a political center to it.  He was great in West Wing and when I see him in show like this, I think it brings some of the enjoyment of West Wing to whatever other show he is in.

The minor frustration I had with that part was that everything moved a little too quickly. The pres and VP were have a late night discussion about strategy, then by the following day, the sub had already been photographed and the weapon retrieved.

It also seems a bit foolish that the pres and VP would think they could pull that off and somehow keep it a secret. Callum was immediately aware that something had happened. Didn't they realize that the very same intelligence sources that alerted them to the presence of the sub in the first place would also be capable of knowing the weapon had been moved? When it comes to rebuilding trust, they just keep digging that hole deeper.

Hard disagree. Keri Russell in The Americans was the milfiest milf to ever milf.

IIRC, there was a pretty amazing ass shot from Ms. Russell sometime during season one.

Found it! I spoilered it, in case anyone doesn't want to see Keri Russell's nude awesome ass. I wonder if Rufus Sewell wrote and directed that scene.

My wife watched seasons 1 and 2.  She started watching season 3 while I was around, so I started paying attention.  Seems like a pretty decent show, but I doubt I'll go back and watch the first two seasons.

Still watching season 3, but I find myself hating Russell’s character more with each episode. In this season, she wants to be her own woman but has to constantly rely on her marriage for professional assistance, even though she proclaims otherwise. And she continually drags others into her chaos potentially ruining their life and career. It makes for a whirlwind of a show.

not to mention that she appears to sabotage Hal at every turn.
