Dammit, this one hurts. Today, it was announced that Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, original bassist for The Stone Roses and later Primal Scream, has died. He was 63.

For my fellow Britpop/Madchester fans, the Roses were as good as it got. Their self-titled debut is considered one of the greatest debut albums in British Music history. Hell, it's one of the greatest British albums period -- debut or otherwise. It's simply perfect from start-to-finish.

RIP, Mani.

I saw this today. Will have to disagree on the Stone Roses, but sad to hear regardless.

Second Coming?

Damn.  I was pretty crazy about them, and they're still all over a lot of my playlists.  Waterfall is a masterpiece.

And Second Coming wasn't terrible in retrospect, nothing was going to live up to their earlier stuff.

Second Coming was a big letdown — but still had some good parts. They got in a 5-year contract dispute with their label and music basically passed them up. By the time they came back with Second Coming, we were to Oasis and grunge (Nirvana/Pearl Jam).

That first album was a masterpiece.

Meant to post this yesterday.

I love that first album.  Obviously, "Fools Gold" is one of the great songs of all time but my favorite is "I Am The Resurrection".  The breakdown and jam in the middle of that song really connects with me.  RIP Mani.

Same. For the same reason. The quintessential Roses’ song, led by a cocksure frontman who can barely carry a tune singing that he’s the “resurrection and the light.” It’s a perfect song.
