November 26Nov 26 There is clearly a new idea on the 40 acres about how recruiting should be done. I’m not sure where these new insights are going to take the program, but it will at least be entertaining to see if all these guys succeed or fail at Texas. I’m very skeptical.
November 26Nov 26 This guy seems to have the highest upside of the last 4 commits we’ve gotten. Gerry seemS real high on him. Just may take a couple years to grow into his body frame and produce. As an aside, Carlsbad, CA is a beautiful little town on the Pacific.

Taking late projects to round out the class is new? The big change is that across the board blue chips need more guys who don't need NIL money to round out the class, because smaller schools can and will offer big packages to the mid four stars to be the stars of their classes.
November 26Nov 26 He is an athletic freak if I remember right. When he committed to Cal the mods were all “uhhhh NFL body like now”. I think he is pretty raw but I am going off memory from 6 months ago. High upside player but might take a year or two to find his sea legs

The law of averages suggests we all be skeptical of any player who's not rated at the very top for his position. Even with them we know how often something goes way wrong. Just hope a couple of every half-dozen "fillers" in a class eventually contribute. If a guy has the size and tools, is affordable and of course is also seen as a culture fit, I don't know why we wouldn't roll the dice on him. Especially in the age of NIL. Nobody's signing 28 obvious draft picks. Edited November 26Nov 26 by Gut Wagon

November 27Nov 27 In this new era, it makes sense to take some lottos. Hope we develop the shit out of him.

Yes it’s new. As you just said, things have changed. Texas last year did not get commitments a few weeks before signing day from four white three star players who had offers from just lower level schools. That’s definitely different.

It is so critical to note they're white. Very cool.
November 27Nov 27 This is going to go over like a lead balloon, but about seven weeks ago I watched Ketch as he outlined this entire strategy. It's not just for Texas, it's for every Blueblood. I'm glad to see Texas isn't being left behind, though. At least for the next 2-3 years, Texas will pay out the wazoo for established players in the portal and then take 80 chances on other players, hoping 25% of them pan out each year, paying a lot to those who do and wishing the best for those who don't.

Hell yeah if anyone has his finger on the pulse enough to identify across-the-board trends in college football and opine on them, it’s Geoff motherfuckin Ketchum. I’d watch that.

December 10Dec 10 I hope this is the type recruit that eats rocks for 2 years and blows up like countless OU LB's that grow into mini-Boz by the time they are JR/SR and get all the airtime on the Red River telecast.
