I don’t know who they were, but the feeds went down so they are showing something else now

That's a recording of Brett from earlier before they got out of the car.

Yeah.  I realized that after I could edit.  Missed the Bret action when it was live.

“I’ve had to take antacids I’m so sick to my stomach today because of this impending catastrophe,” National Hurricane Center scientist Eric Blake tweeted as the storm — drawing energy from the Gulf’s unusually warm, 84-degree water — grew more scary.

i don't know that i've ever seen a fully formed eyewall on shore. that's not to say i haven't or that it hasn't happened. but that picture is amazing and terrifying.

Reminds me of a cat we used to have

Yeah. They said this one was going in the record books. They were right.

What amazes me is how Michael went from "looks like something may form by the Yucatan" to "SWEET MOTHER OF GOD WHAT A MEAN SONOFABITCH" in so little time.  Went from zero to "you're all fucked" in a couple of days.

Meh, All about the twitter followers. Well worth the risk..................

This thing is so tightly wound that the worst winds are on the west side of the eye.  Friends, I gotta tell ya, when you start getting into that shit, you have a storm that is unusually powerful.

The only thing that kept this from being one of the strongest hurricanes ever anywhere to hit any land on earth was... it ran outta time [/#aggy].

Don't even get me started on the fucktards that "chase" hurricanes (there's nothing to "chase".  It's all around you and will probably kill your dumb ass).  Chasing tornadoes is a different, and usually really helpful, job, as dangerous as that is.  Running into a hurricane with a videocamera like some schlep out of a Jackass episode, well, you deserve what you get.

Never mind the CNN shits who are out there telling us it's windy and dangerous, and shit is almost hitting you.  Please God, make it so.

Meh, that was Jeebus and SImon Peter who walked by.  It's really 500 feet deep.

Yep.  It's damn near a giant EF-3 tornado with the eye still holding on land.

Oh, my one exception to the 'cane chasers is Jeff Piotrowski.  I love that guy.  And he hung out near the Blue Shed.  He has smarts.

If you had told anybody before this that a cat 4 would make landfall in Georgia, but come through Florida first, they would called you insane. Here we are though.

Warm Gulf water is a bitch.

Not unheard of with Gulf storms.  The reason is that the Gulf gets exceptionally warm through summer and fall, and the Gulf currents, cut off from the mitigating Atlantic larger currents, generally circulate by land, pick up even more heat, and return it to the Gulf:

gulfcurrentsmap-hires.jpg

Michael picked up very warm water near the Yucatan channel (84°) and rode it north where the temps are even warmer (84°+) along the eastern side of the Gulf's warm middle.  Hurricanes need surface water of at least 80° to form, but if they get up in to the mid 80's, that can really spur them quickly.  What usually kills hurricane development by this time of the season in the Gulf is the shear and mid-level winds that come with the turning into fall.  The Gulf has been unusually quiet up until now, so hurricane formation is more likely than average;

Oh, and you all can be thankful for that little front that went by yesterday.  That's part of a strong high pressure system smack in the middle of the country that pushed the front through.  That front blocked any NW movement of MIchael, which is a hurricane's natural movement based on the momentum generated by the storm's spin and friction on the land (and even the water, though not nearly as much as land).  If that little thing hadn't been around, Michael would certainly have been more likely to come up our way - in equally warm water.

Or slammed New Orleans (again)

a good Wet-Vac will take that shit right out.

Here’s Brett getting proper fucked for those that missed. FF to about 30

Dang this storm seems like it's moving fast. I'm probably just used to Florence and Harvey.

Interesting.

You're such a gem, or Jim.

In even-numbered years, my wife and I spend Thanksgiving week with my in-laws at the Marriott Legends Edge resort in PCB. Might be needing to change plans this year. I think the resort will make it through okay, but the surrounding areas are gonna be devastated.
