Christmas Vacation is disjointed, has terrible setting production (driving through the mountains of suburban Chicago?), and has multiple scenes that are just complete implausible (the sledding scene can fuck right off). It also has a ton of fantastic actor interactions, all-time lines, and bits that are funny any time, anywhere. TLDR - the criticism is valid, it's still great for what it is.

I watched it at a screening two years ago and for an hour afterwards Chevy Chase answered questions for us about the movie. I go every year to see it at the theater on the day it is shown. My niece and nephew back in Texas use a Christmas Vacation stocking with my name on it above their fireplace.

I can get past the journey into the wilderness to find the Christmas tree scene. But the sledding scene felt a little too strained for a laugh. Much funnier and more quotable than European Vacation, and like you said, still great.

The sledding scene is probably the only one that is just off to me. Then again it ends in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I used to work directly next to that Wal-Mart and shopped in it regularly in Frisco,CO. The only way a mountain scene would have made any sense there is for them to be coming off the side of Copper Mountain behind the Wal-Mart. Just one of those suspension of disbelief scenes in a movie full of them.
December 1Dec 1 They are having a showing of "Christmas Vacation" with a Q&A with Chevy Chase at Bass Concert Hall. I bet they could have included Randy Quaid for cheap.
December 1Dec 1 Christmas Vacation is the first Vacation where you don't see full rudeness on display, so it doesn't have that going for it like the OG and Europe do.

December 2Dec 2 Every year people bitch about A Christmas Story. I love that movie because my Grandpa always lit up watching it. He would say it was pretty spot on with how his childhood growing up in Western Pennsylvania during the 1940's was. I appreciate all the details in the movie for that reason. That said I watch it once a year and I'm good. It's not a movie I binge watch like Home Alone or Christmas Vacation.

It’s worth it to go. Chevy is getting up there (think he’s 82) and he’s slowing down quite a bit. His wife was on stage with him when he did the Q&A when I went two years ago. He did just fall on the stage in Buffalo so he still may have had some lingering issues from that. I didn’t ask a question because the only thing I would've asked him is did you get being so ornery with people from your grandfather? Pretty sure he would’ve flipped me the bird and told me to get out if I brought up the most hated man in the history of the US Navy. Edited December 2Dec 2 by UpperWestside
December 2Dec 2 If you don’t like A Christmas Story you are soulless and deserve to be called out. WTF

A Christmas Story is great to have on in the background during Christmas get together. There's no obligation to sit down and watch, but it offers the opportunity to tune in during the iconic scenes like when his dad unboxes the lamp or the flagpole scene.

December 2Dec 2 Chevy will also be screening in Sugar Land and Grand Prairie. He must be on the bill with Spinal Tap.

December 4Dec 4 I'm the prime age demographic for Home Alone but it never really grabbed me. Even as a kid I though the premise was really fucking stupid. I like A Christmas Story but I overdid the TBS marathons before streaming and I just never care to pull it up these days. My son watched Polar Express nonstop for over a year regardless of the season. The animation is creepy but I still enjoy the story. Die Hard is a fine movie, but people going overboard with the "is it a Christmas move" arguments is really fucking annoying. Who the fuck cares? Watch it whenever the fuck you want. Christmas Vacation is still great. This thread is literally the first time the "mountains in Chicago" thing even crossed my mind. I had to google the scene to even see what y'all were talking about. And the sled scene is just a cartoonish interlude, NL movies have plenty of them. Anyone criticizing Bad Santa can fuck right off. It's a perfect movie. Every scene, every word, it's perfect.
