December 9Dec 9 Wow, damn. Knew he was illin and got a nice note from shithead Dwight about being unable to continue their tour. RIP. Edited December 9Dec 9 by TwiceHorn
December 9Dec 9 Knew this was coming but had hopes Raul could hold out a while longer. Fuck. Saw them back in their "heyday" at the Erwin Center with Mary Chapin Carpenter opening, fantastic show. Flaco joined them on stage, it was great. About 10 years ago, they tried to start a music festival here in Taylor, the "Stomp n Holler" festival. They got the Mavericks to headline, it was incredible. My polka band played out in the gazebo earlier in the day, so I guess technically I can say I got to open up for the Mavericks. Rest in peace sir.
December 9Dec 9 Damn. I knew he was fighting cancer, but didn't realize his situation had gone so downhill in the past 2 months. Was listening to him as a guest on Dwight Yoakam's show on Sirius not all that long ago. Funny enough, the first time I heard "All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down," I just assumed it was Dwight singing, and that the Mavericks were a side-project of his. I was a latecomer to the Mavericks, but got really into them over the past 2 years or so. If I'm outside, drinking a few beers while grilling or sitting by the fire, a pretty good chance a Mavericks song will be in the playlist and I'll be singing along. In addition to some of the gems already posted, I love this song: Just a truly talented singer and songwriter. Edited December 9Dec 9 by Storm the Field
December 9Dec 9 I recently learned Dwight may be a shithead, but here's what he said back in October.
December 9Dec 9 " This is where the road divides. This is where we have to say goodbye." Amazing singer. His voice would make Roy Orbison blush. RIP.

I was there because my wife really like Mary Chapin Carpenter. I'm pretty sure that the Mavericks opened for Carpenter that night. One of those shows when you walk away knowing that the opening act was just better. We saw the Mavericks a few more times and they were always great. Raul had an incredible voice.

You are probably right, because we had 4th row seats in front of the stage and I was one of the only men there. Lots of flannel that night.
December 9Dec 9 Listening to The Mavericks on Spotify, I remembered that we were at Stubbs when they recorded the Live in Austin Texas album. I have the DVD at home. Seems like a great thing to watch this evening.
December 9Dec 9 RIP. A friend gave me one of their CDs several years ago, which caused me to have a greater appreciation for the Mavericks. Fuck cancer
December 9Dec 9 The Mavericks, in my opinion, gave the world some of the funnest, catchiest tunes to ever grace a PA. Mad respect to those guys. RIP - what a fucking voice.

They were always an awesome show. The first time I saw "Dance The Night Away" and The Mavericks on RDS or whatever, I thought it would be a Van Halen cover. And I thought that might be pretty spectacular.
December 10Dec 10 Caught their last show at Floore this past April. It was a makeup concert, so i was hoping he was recovering better. Great live
December 10Dec 10 This sucks. Raul had such a powerful and unique voice, and they always put on a great show. I've been a fan since the mid 90's. Saw them several times, but a couple stand out. Floores Country store with Flaco joining and Rick Trevino. I saw them at Willie's July 4th picnic in Austin this year. Short set but they still sounded great. RIP Raul.
December 10Dec 10 I used to see the Mavericks for free back in '89... 90 with the original lineup (had Robert Reynolds on Bass back then) & a friend of mine dated RR for around a year. That mostly fell apart because RR was in Miami & Lesley was in North Broward / Pompano Beach. These shows were free with bands being paid very little & the Mavs wanting to play originals vs. most (i.e. ALL) c&w places wanting covers only & *maybe* one original peppered in. These gigs were @ the Reunion Room in Fort Lauderdale, a new wave / alternative club & they were still very early (obv.) in their career. Incidentally, this was the same club where "Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids" played their first gigs (now with only 1 original "Spooky Kid" outside of Brian / MM). Anyhow, this is a heavy personally connected loss & the music community has lost a phenomenally talented voice. After re-forming in 2014, the wife & I saw them in Helotes @ Floores (guest list) on their "25th Anniversary" tour & Robert gave us shirts & posters + other swag; his brother was the merch guy & I can still hear him complaining. Pictured here with Raul from March 2009 on a solo promo run via in-store @ Waterloo Records during SXSW. Raul invited me on the bus after I got the touring stage hand to mention "Reunion Room". Spent around 30 minutes with Raul & then realized they had places to go & I was holding him up. I have lots of other photos from that in-store & can add here if anyone wants to see them.

December 11Dec 11 There's a gem on his first solo album, Every Little Thing About You, that he described as "if Led Zeppelin did country" and it's a perfect description:
December 11Dec 11 Last time I saw him live was April, 2018, a great Mavericks concert. The venue was St. George’s Theatre on Staten Island. This one hurts.
