December 11Dec 11 detroit free press 4 minutes ago Sherrone Moore firing by Michigan accelerates what seemed inevitable Jeff Seidel 6–7 minutes Dec. 10, 2025, 7:32 p.m. ET I can’t say that I’m surprised. The rumors have been swirling for a while. Reporters were chasing it. Then, the news broke when an email arrived on Wednesday, Dec.10, from the Michigan athletic department: “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” according to a statement attributed to Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.” So, while it seems stunning and surprising – for the news to pop on what seems like a random day in December, a week after the early signing period and three days after the Wolverines found out their bowl berth – it’s not surprising to many. Head coach Sherrone Moore of the Michigan Wolverines leads his team off the field after warm-up before the game against the Maryland Terrapins at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025. Because it confirmed, in general terms, what has been swirling on social media and in whispers around the program. So what now? In the short term, Biff Poggi has been appointed interim coach, effective immediately according to the release. What about the long term? Michigan has a chance to do what I thought it would do after the end of next season: Go out and find a new coach. All this did was accelerate what I thought was inevitable. Why this could be good for Michigan First, let’s tackle a big-picture point of view. This is freaking 2025. Assuming the allegations prove true, nobody should be surprised that having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member is a fireable offense. And from the U-M perspective, it’s embarrassing. Now, let’s dive into the sports side of this story. Just from a pure football standpoint, this could be a good thing for the Wolverines. On Tuesday night, I was sitting with a disgruntled Michigan fan and we were talking about all the different programs with new coaches over the past few weeks. LSU. Penn State. Florida. Michigan State, to name just a few. “Would Sherrone Moore be a candidate for any of those jobs?” the person said to me. “Probably not,” I said. The guy shrugged as if to say: See what I mean? Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore cheers on at a timeout against Ohio State during the first half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025. Moore, remember, served as interim coach for the Wolverines during the final three regular-season games of 2023 en route to a College Football Playoff championship, while Jim Harbaugh was in hot water and serving a Big Ten-imposed suspension for his role in the sign-stealing saga. Moore then went out and beat Penn State, Maryland and Ohio State. Those three games were viewed as an audition, and Moore became the obvious choice to take Harbaugh’s job when he bolted for the Chargers in January 2024. Some thought Harbaugh's magic would just continue, even though he left. It didn't. Many Michigan fans soured on Moore after he went 17-8 over the last two seasons, with a brief uptick after 2024's upset of Ohio State. After the Wolverines got spanked by the Buckeyes in 2025 – demonstrating how the trajectory of the OSU and U-M programs were obviously heading in different directions – I figured Moore would be on the hot seat next year. If the Wolverines didn’t show improvement, he would be fired at the end of the season. So, in a strange way, this only accelerated what I thought was going to happen in 2026 anyway. U-M can find a great coach On the surface, this seems like horrible timing for Michigan. Because the big-name coaching carousel has been churning since Penn State fired James Franklin midway through this season. And while many of the star coachs have already changed jobs – or gotten massive extensions – I don’t think that will be a factor in the quality of coach that Michigan can attract. U-M has the money to go out and find a legitimate, talented, experienced coach who can turn this program around. Because getting spanked by Ohio State – even after four straight wins – shouldn't be acceptable. Not getting into the CFP, now that it takes 12 teams, should be not acceptable. The Wolverines have the ability to clean up this mess and bring in somebody new. To start fresh. To change the trajectory of this program. If the Wolverines make the right hire, this program could actually improve next season. To be honest, I didn’t have much confidence that Michigan was going to make the CFP next season. But now? Heck yes. It’s possible. If they make the right hire. If they can dip into the portal and find the right talent. And if they can put together the right offensive plan to utilize that talent. Instantly, Michigan fans have their wish list and Vegas already put out some leading candidates. Washington head coach Jedd Fisch watches a play against Michigan during the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025. Like Jedd Fisch, Washington's coach and a former Michigan assistant. Or Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer, who lost to the Wolverines in the CFP title game while coaching Washington. Or Jesse Minter, the former Michigan defensive coordinator who is working with Harbaugh as the DC for the Los Angeles Chargers (and who still has a one-year "show cause" penalty from the NCAA). Or Joe Brady, the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator. Yes, they should shoot for the moon. Or the Huskie. Or the Crimson Tide. Whoever you might think of. The goal should be an upgrade. And in the eyes of some Michigan fans, that won't be hard. You know who might benefit the most? Bryce Underwood. Because I don’t think the freshman quarterback developed as much as he should have this season. Maybe it was a freshman wall. Maybe he was dinged up at the end, by the time Michigan played Ohio State. But I expected more from him. And the blame starts with the coaching. So, from a big picture, this is an embarrassing day for U-M. When you start talking about inappropriate relationships, it's icky and disgusting. Nobody should be celebrating any of this. But on a smaller scale, from a pure football perspective, this could be a good thing for this football team if they make the right hire. And there's really no reason why they can't.
