The episode of American Masters on PBS last night was excellent. Check it out if you haven’t already. Truly an amazing talent and by all accounts a really nice guy.

“At 30, I used to exercise to look good. At the age of 50 to be fit At 70 not to be padded in a bed. At 80 to be able to live without assistance. Now at 99 I do it out of pure defiance. ”

CSB... I met him twice when I lived in Malibu. The first time was just small talk (after some comments about my appreciation for his work), but I had just come from a softball game and had my shirt and hat and such on.

Met him again a few years later... Skipped right to "It's good to see you, Mr. Van Dyke" and he replied "I think I told you to call me 'Dick'... Are you still playing softball?"

He was in his mid seventies at the time... Just one of those people who made you feel good just by being around them.
