(Inspired by Rob Reiner.)

So many directors only have 1-2 notes.  They're great at action movies, OR comedies, OR science fiction, but can't do them all.

Seems to me it's like being a multi-sport athlete.  So who's good at it?

Robert Zemekis.  Comedy, sci fi, horror, character drama, action.

James Mangold.  Comic book movies, westerns, drama, action.

Who you got?

Coen Brothers - Comedy, Westerns, Dramas, Action, really dabble in a little of everything.

Not mentioning everything else he’s done, but Spielberg put out Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List IN THE SAME FUCKING YEAR. So, him.

The Coen Brothers is a good one. I just went on a journey and watched all of their movies from the beginning. Just wild swings in genre and (almost) all great movies.

I love Reiner, but I don’t think he strayed too far from comedy. A Few Good Men and Misery both have plenty of comedic scenes.

Same for Zemeckis and the Coens.

Agreed on Mangold. His filmography is all over the place. Oliver & Company to Cop Land. The Sweetest Thing to A Complete Unknown.

Wes Anderson.

You jest, but it takes a special talent to craft stories about fathers, sons and the hazards of youth in fifteen different films and not tell exactly the same story thrice.

Adam McKay:

Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talledega Nights

Big Short, Vice, Don't Look Up

TIL that any movie with a single funny scene is a comedy.

Excuse Me What GIF by Bounce

Ridley Scott

Sci-Fi

Historical Epics

Crime and Buddy Flicks (like Thelma and Louise)

And if you buy what the Hollywood Foreign Press did with The Martian....."comedy"

  • Author

Sam Mendes

Spy movies

Art housework or whatever you'd classify American Beauty and Revolutionary Road.

War movies

Plenty of directors can do 2.  But 3 and above gets into rare air.

Nolan?

superheroes, war, historical epics, crime/mystery, science fiction... they do all have his time signature, but the themes and topics are wide.

Danny Boyle is pretty eclectic as well. Scottish junkies to zombie plagues and a lot in between.

Almost every single Kubrick film was unique in his filmography as far as genre goes. He did two noirs at the beginning of his career but otherwise everything else is singularly apart from the others.

Danny Boyle is probably my first suggestion, as well.  He’s all over the place and always interesting.

Deep cut for my cineastes, but Takashi Miike.

Ron Howard is someone else, too, that doesn’t really have a personal visual style and is willing to play in lots of different sandboxes.

Beat me to it.

I will watch just about anything Danny Boyle makes. I actually had him in my Coen brothers post, but decided on the Coens alone. But he’s a solid answer.

Peter Weir and Mike Nichols.

Great call on both, though I wish Weir would make one more before he goes

Easy answer is Sheridan, between the 6666 and the Bosque Ranch that has to be over 250,000 acres of range.

Sooooo while not strictly a director, Jordan Peele is awesome. Lovecraft Country is underrated.

Also, Coogler appears to be flawless
