Friday at 04:16 PM5 days This was a very good year for new music. 1. viagr aboys- viagra boys: this is by far my favorite album of the year, i love it. clever, catchy, humorous. the epitome of their weird post punk style. 2. instant holograms on metal film- stereolab: picks up right where they left off 15 years ago. their classic synth-pop sound with good melodies and beautful soundscapes. 3. private music- deftones: it's not new or innovative, but it sound exactly like deftones should sound in the year 2025. 4. helldorado- spiritworld: this is a weird one because i love the heavy slayer-esque songs but don't like the other half of the album's death western sound. i like the heavy songs enough that it got a lot of listens. 5. welcome to the civilized world- ghostwoman: excellent psych blues album. they are a duo but make a lof of noise and have some good riffs. 6. the scholars- car seat headrest: it's a concept album, a college rock opera. it has all the signature sounds of the band with catchy guitars and dense lyrics. i think it's a really solid album that seems to have been overlooked...at least i haven't seen much talk about it this year. 7. sable/fable- bon iver: an upbeat happy bon iver album. it's a bit of a different sound while still sounding exactly like bon iver. 8. cutthroat- shame: angry british post-punk with some humor and experimentation. some great tracks on here. 9. the bestiary- castle rat: fantasy/doom metal. great riifs, killer vocals, a really great sounding album. 10. is- my morning jacket: some classic mmj tracks on this one. firmly in their dad rock era but the soaring vocals and layered guitars work. honorable mention: the pattern speaks- skloss: hypnotic, droning psych rock trash classic- frankie and the witch fingers: garage rock/heavy psych tron ares soundtrack- nin: the 4 songs with lyrics are really good.

Friday at 04:40 PM5 days 1. "Price of Admission" Turnpike Troubadours. Some of their finest songwriting to date. My favorite band of my generation just keeps slaying. 2. "Bleeds" Wednesday. I love everything about this band/extended scene. "Pick Up That Knife" is my song of the year. 3. "Big Ugly" Fust. Part of the Asheville scene as well. One of the most straight up "alt country" albums in a minute. 4. "Snocaps" Snocaps. Basically a Waxahatchee record. Which is awesome for me. 5. "Getting Killed" Geese. A fucked up train wreck with inexplicable hooks. Like the best indie stuff of the past few years, I feel like it's chasing Ditch-era Neil Young. In particular "Vampire Blues". 6. "Black Dog & The Wandering Boy" James McMurtry. Took me awhile to accept this wasn't quite Horses & the Hounds level, but there are some incredible songs here. 7. "Little Crosses" Joe Stamm Band. These dudes just keep doing excellent heartland rock. 8. "Bad Reputation" Lance Roark. Turnpike's understudy with a batch of impossibly catchy, well, heartland rock. 9. "Corn Queen" Hailey Whitters. Stupid catchy country that's just polished enough to get radio play, but the songwriting is so far beyond anything else on the radio. She writes about the rural Midwest as well as anyone. 10. "Snipe Hunter" Tyler Childers. I don't think it's his masterpiece, but it is undeniably the most fun record he's ever put out. If you can't jam "Eatin' Big Time" or "Bitin' List", we can't be friends. Edited Friday at 04:41 PM5 days by Al_4_ISU
Friday at 04:42 PM5 days Viagra Boys are great. I didn't get super into this record. Need to give it a few more times. One of my buddies turned me onto them, and if we're hanging out it's not uncommon for someone to puncture a moment of silence with "WEINER DOGS".

It reminds me of someone that I absolutely cannot place. I've watched some clips of them live, and it just intrigues what they're doing. Nothing about it should work, but it definitely does. For me.
Friday at 05:44 PM5 days I’ve heard the Thom Yorke, Berninger, Casablancas, CYHSY comps and I can hear all of those at times but I get a lot of Verlaine.

I'll admit I wasn't blown away by the first things I heard out of them, but they treated my daughter's band with great kindness and respect on their tour together. I'll tip my cap. (Honestly, I was terrified.)

We had him do a private show in fall and it was awesome and so was he.
Monday at 11:45 PM2 days Going through some of the things that have been listed here and this Fust album is one of the best things I’ve listened to in a while - never heard of them before today. One of those albums that could have come out in any decade.
Tuesday at 04:45 PM1 day More mainstream than the cool kids' lists: Witch Post - Beast Matt Beringer - Get Sunk Wet Leg - Moisturizer Jack White - No Name Perfume Genius - Glory Lola Young - I Am Only Fucking Myself Bon Iver - Sable, Fable Turnstile - Never Enough Portugal. The Man - Swish Deftones - Private Music
