My wife took this pic when she saw Dead and Co at the Sphere in April. He's gone and nothing's gonna bring him back

Tangent- a while ago my wife was looking for local info on flooding or something and stumbled onto a Reddit thread about the sky river music festival that was held here over Labor Day weekend in 1968. It was said that the Dead performed, but the poster on wiki doesn’t list them:

image.jpeg

However it does say this:

The last day, members of the Grateful Deadjammed with James Cotton, Big Mama Thornton, and Billy Roberts.[6]

The Reddit thread starts with this pic allegedly of the event, with it looks like bob there closest to camera.

Damn it. I don’t I’ve ever felt this way with the passing of a musician.

Thanks for the soundtrack to so many of my best days and good memories.

I’m going to hole up and listen to some music at a high volume tonight.

I never really got The Days Between until I saw Bobby sing it on “Move Me Brightly” - a celebration of Jerry’s 70th birthday performed at Bobby’s TRI Studios and steamed live for free (which he was doing every Wednesday night back then). It was a fantastic lineup of musicians and went for a good 5-6 hrs.

Bobby was the first member of the band to get out on the road to keep the music alive after Jerry passed. I’m not sure if anyone else would’ve kept going if not for him, Phil was the last to come around. At this show, Phil showed up to play bass for one song then Mike Gordon of Phish took over for most of the show except for when David Schools of WSP sat in.

It was an amazing show. Dylan’s kid was there, Willie Nelson’s kid was there. Paul Simon’s kid was there. Donna was there (and sounded awesome). Lots of talented artists took part.

I thought this was one of the most poignant moments of the night.

I don’t ID as a Deadhead, but I love them, and in particular Bob’s entire vibe. IMO his grounding in traditional American music was the lynchpin of the whole damn thing.

Selfishly, I'm really sad I won't ever get the chance to take Doomlet to see Bob. I had hoped to share that with him by now, but it just wasn't the right time yet. Maybe we can still catch Mickey somehow...

As time marches on losing actors and musicians that have been so important to so many of us has become more and more frequent but, for me at least, I thought Bob would be with us for several more years. This was unexpected and really hurts. Grateful I saw him is SF just a few months ago.

The only time I saw Bobby live was with Phish at Shoreline in 2000. He played El Paso and West L.A. Fadeaway with them. Then, they played Chalkdust, and Bobby definitely was having trouble keeping up, and he may have been blended into the mix a bit. But it was all good.

My favorite local band, who normally plays a lot of Dead, really kicked it up a notch tonight. Fitting tribute.

I saw Bobby referred to today as the "most recorded" musician in history. I don't know that that's true, but it's one of those things that sounds like it very well may be true.

this. Not a deadhead but when you basically create a music genre you are in rarified air.

It's probably due to all the bootlegs...

I would think it’s Paul McCartney. I’ve heard that Yesterday is the most covered song.

It depends on how they define “most recorded.” If all the tapers’ recordings count, then sure. Bobby’s definitely been the most prolific member of the band since Jerry passed. He was out there keeping the music alive right from the start. If not for him, Phil might never have played again.

I too was never a Dead fan but this is incredible. Major props to Sturg and Mayer.

They're definitely including the tapers in that assessment.

78 is too young. Glad I got to see him May 25 and 24 at the Sphere. Also saw him once more in Dallas a while back with Dead & Co. While not a true Deadhead, I appreciated the music Bob & Co. created and the incredible fan base. At the great stoplight of life, the world went right and the Grateful Dead went left and kept on truckin'. What a hell of a ride and an incredible legacy.

Fair skies and following winds. Sail on, sail on, sailor.

I would think that is true. 60 years GD Dead and CO shows, Ratdog, Wolf Bros etc

What sucky news.

I figure I fall somewhere between a casual and a deadhead. I couldn't tell you one year from another by ear or where the best Althea was played etc, but they've been a constant in my life since I was in my early 20's

The Dead shaped my musical journey and tastes for years and are still in regular rotation on my apps, in my car etc.

Bob wrote a handful of my personal favorites, Cassidy, being in my top 5 so I leave you with some of the lyrics:

Fare thee well now,let your life proceed by it's own design

Nothing to tell now ,let the words be yours I am done with mine

RIP Bobby Short-shorts

Some Guy: Tell me you're a deadhead without telling me you're a deadhead.

Bobby: I've been to every show.

I guess it depends on what the other guys want to do. We’ve already got DSO and JRAD. Is JGB still around? I see no reason to assume others won’t keep the music alive.

Except for when he and Pig were fired.

Just one Bobby original, Only A River, the first track from Bobby’s last solo album Blue Mountain. Which is awesome. But it’s all great with Masterpiece, Bird Song with the harp (which is killer and the high point of the set - I’d seen this before), then Ripple to close it out.

I think he missed some Mickey and the Hartbeats shows, but the accounts I read about the firing were that he just kept showing up and playing the Dead shows. And its not like Jerry was going to confront him. But there are some missing tapes. So who knows.

It's just a funny quip. The truth might only serve to make it less funny.

Moving tribute from Warren Haynes

Another remembrance of the gifts that Bobby gave us was Weir Here, a free live stream from his TRI Studios on Wednesday nights. Those were so awesome and a lot of them are up on YouTube. We got collaborations with a lot of different musicians and conversations on “the couch,” often with Steve Parish who had great stories to tell. Here’s a particularly good one with Warren Haynes as the guest. These were such a treat. Great audio and video and a solid, reliable stream at a time when those things together were pretty rare. Bobby was ahead of his time.

Yeah, it wasn’t a firing in the conventional sense. Nothing the Dead did was conventional. It was more of a ‘get your shit together’ thing. They were brothers and brothers fight sometimes. It was only a few shows. The history is unclear and there are varying accounts. But if it got Bobby to get more serious then that was a good thing. Those were the only “firings” but there are countless stories of hand infighting, most notably of the time Jerry “threw Phil down the stairs.” There are even more stories of the magic and playing together as one like fingers on a glove.

I was just cracking wise, of course. I do have this bootleg in my collection.

No worries. You encouraged me to read up on it. I knew there was a period where Jerry was really dissatisfied with Bobby's ability to improve early on. Reading about it, I really like the recollection that Bobby, while taking the time to really focus on his playing, just kept showing up, and the Dead being the Dead, nobody did anything to dissuade him. Phil probably made some faces, but they just kept playing.
