Sources: Tomlin to leave Steelers after 19 years

Mike Tomlin is stepping down as Steelers coach, sources told ESPN, ending a 19-year run in Pittsburgh during which he never had a losing season.

Steelers have been successful because they actually follow a proper vetting process instead of hiring retreads. None of Noll, Cowher, or Tomlin had head coaching experience.

If they follow that pattern then none of Stefanski, Harbaugh, McDaniel, etc. will be candidates. It will be some coordinator or position coach nobody has heard of.

#12

League circles think he is definitely doing TV next year - I guess he can take over Matt Ryan's spot on CBS?

He probably goes to CBS for a year to wait for a better opportunity. Or maybe he pulls a Cowher and is just rumored as the next coach of the Cowboys for the next 10 years

unfortunately Dan Rooney isn't walking thru that door anytime soon

I'm not sure if this is going to help as much as Steelers fandom wants it to. It seems they've been fielding one of the oldest teams in the NFL year after year, signing veterans past their prime rather than trying to build something from draft picks. Don't know how much of that has been Tomlin's call.

This makes me think they'll miss on the coaching hire, too. Watch them hire an old former head coach to take Tomlin's place, rather than do what they've done in the past and you'll know the problem hasn't been addressed yet.

"We should throw him a million bucks to be our defensive coordinator and HCIW for when Elko retires after the back-to-back championships. He seems like one of the good ones."

(He’d be CLE head coach #11 since the 1999 return).

Don't be absurd.

Aggies know Elko is set to start his Saban-esque dynasty and win 6 titles in 9 years. Sleeping giant out front shoulda told ya.

It’s crazy to think that only 1 of the venerable AFC North teams currently has a head coach and it’s fucking Zac Taylor. Division should be interesting next season.

Didn't realize he was still that young, even with him being "older" in NFL coaches rankings.

He'll have his choice of jobs, and should.

And never once held a 2nd half lead in any of those. He's obviously a good coach and culture setter, but they've gotten completely passed by by a league that's shifted heavily towards the offensive side of the ball.

#26

Not exactly passed by. He hasn't had a decent quarterback for years. Blame the GM for this mess. However when you never have losing record you aren't drafting top ten

There was a stat this morning on the TV at the gym that said they have only led for 17 minutes or so in those 7 playoff games.

It was time, 19 years at one spot in this NFL is an eternity. The team has not been good. The bottom line is winning, he said it himself, and they have not won enough. The assistant coaches have been very underwhelming and that is his choice. The offensive coordinators have been a revolving door. It's time to make a change, and I think that goes all the way to the General Manager.

And this. Perpetually drafting in the mid to late teens because you are consistently 8-8/9-6/10-7

Man that's one of the most real live responses ever by the Balt owner...pretty cool.

Also them flipping coaches would be hilarious.

It was definitely time. Being in NFL Purgatory is the worst. Not good enough to really contend, not bad enough to bottom out to retool in the draft. Seemed he was just hanging his hat on not having a losing season. Which is cool but it was just breeding mediocrity, which is what Pitt has been for years.

This was definitely mutual. Tomlin didn't want the label of being fired and the Pitt organization didn't want to say they fired their coach. Since Ben R retired, their QB situation has been a mess, which is a big cause of their mediocrity.

They have been in QB hell since BR retired, no doubt. BR's retirement corresponded with GM Kevin Colbert leaving and being replaced by Omar Kahn. Steelers decided to draft a QB in 2022 and too Kenny Pickett at 1.20 and add Trubisky via free agency.

That 2022 draft consisted of QBs: Pickett (Steelers - 20), Ridder (74), Willis (86), Corral (94), Zappe (137), Howell (144), Oladokun (Steelers - 241), Skylar Thompson (247), Purdy (262). Pittsburgh GM clearly did not think very highly of Purdy, taking 2 spares ahead of him. In 2023, the went with the same steaming pile of QBs as 2022: Pickett, Rudolph, Trubisky. In 2024, they rolled with Fields, Russell Wilson, and Kyle Allen.

It will be interesting to see what they do in 2026 - they did draft Will Howard )

won with some shitty qb 's. thats not being 'stale', that's making chicken salad out of chicken shit ...

Key Quarterbacks Under Tomlin (Post-Roethlisberger Era):

  • Ben Roethlisberger (Early to Mid-Career): The dominant starter for much of Tomlin's tenure, leading the team to Super Bowl wins.

  • Mason Rudolph: Stepped in during injuries and later as a starter/backup.

  • Kenny Pickett: A first-round pick who started for a period.

  • Mitchell Trubisky: A veteran presence for a season.

  • Justin Fields: Acquired in a trade, providing mobility.

  • Aaron Rodgers: A high-profile, late-season addition in 2025 who sparked a playoff run, noted for his strong connection with Tomlin.

To be fair, nobody in the league thought highly of Purdy. I don't think he changes Pittsburgh's fortunes in that completely different environment & offense.

Don't forget Russell Wilson last year. Wilson and Rodgers were nothing more than guys towards the end of their careers to be band-aids while they figure out their future at the QB position. It reminds me of what Dallas went through when Aikman retired before they landed on Romo. Wilson and Rodgers were kind of like Testaverde and Bledsoe back to back year. Justin Fields was Quincy Carter (no racist). But Dallas did have a lot more junk being trotted out there than Pitt but the same conecpt/approach. Neither franchise knew what to do once their franchise QB left.

Should be Super Bowl win (singular) under Roethlisberger. The first one was under Cowher. The Steelers won the Super Bowl in Tomlin's second year.

Aaron Rodgers was not a "late-season addition." He was on the team the whole season.

Signing TJ Watt for 3/$123mm was not great in supporting a needed reset, but it would have been problematic for getting Metcalf, getting Rodgers, etc. and would have guaranteed no playoffs this year. That said, they'll have 1-2 years of desert wandering...

We'll see if Art2 is as competent as his father soon enough.

They didn't fire Khan at the same time Tomlin stepped down, sorry for @PittsburghTiger but it doesn't seem like things are going to change very much. Teams that draft in the middle can compete. That guy has no excuse.
