AAS: Doug Cugini, founder of the Hole in the Wall, an iconic Austin music venue, died Tuesday. He was 75.

His death was confirmed by longtime employee and one-time co-owner Debbie Rombach, who had visited the Hole in the Wall as a customer on the very first day that it opened on June 15, 1974.

Born Aug. 20, 1950, Cugini and his mother Billie Cugini, started the joint as an eatery — “a restaurant serving truck stop-style food,” Cugini once said. He owned and operated the place, a West Campus staple at 2538 Guadalupe St., until 1998.

His parents ran truck stops on Ben White Boulevard and U.S. 183. They created a third for their 24-year-old son, who had just graduated from college in Buffalo, N.Y.

"I was kind of naive" Cugini told Texas Monthly in  2023. "I was from western New York, and Texas was like the Old West to me — basically, the Hole in the Wall Gang from 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.' We had four photos of those gangsters up on the wall, and that was it.

Lot of good memories there, and glad it’s still around.

Now I want a Reality sandwich with extras japs, then play some pool with my Dad on his lunch break from KUT across the street.

RIP
