probably not on anyone's radar but this Magnetic Fields song is pretty fucking sad.

when you're old and lonely
you will wish you'd married me
I could build a fire for you
and bring you cakes and tea

when you're cold and hungry
I'll be waiting by the phone
you can call me up and tell me
how you're all alone
all alone

when you're old and lonely
and the rush of life is past
days go by too slowly
and the years go by too fast

when your golden loneliness
is heavier than stone
you can call me up and say:
"my god, I'm all alone
all alone..."

uno mas..

Bright Eyes - Lua

I know that it is freezing but I think we have to walk
I keep waving at the taxis; they keep turning their lights off
But Julie knows a party at some actor's west side loft
Supplies are endless in the evening; by the morning they'll be gone

When everything is lonely I can be my own best friend
I get a coffee and the paper; have my own conversations
With the sidewalk and the pigeons and my window reflection
The mask I polish in the evening, by the morning looks like shit

And I know you have a heavy heart, I can feel it when we kiss
So many men stronger than me have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me, I'm not a gamble, you can count on me to split
The love I sell you in the evening, by the morning won't exist

You're looking skinny like a model with your eyes all painted black
You just keep going to the bathroom, always say you'll be right back
Well, it takes one to know one, kid, I think you've got it bad
But what's so easy in the evening, by the morning is such a drag

I've got a flask inside my pocket, we can share it on the train
If you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same
We might die from medication, but we sure killed all the pain
But what was normal in the evening, by the morning seems insane

And I'm not sure what the trouble was that started all of this
The reasons all have run away but the feeling never did
It's not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live
Because what is simple in the moonlight, by the morning never is
What's so simple in the moonlight, now is so complicated
What's so simple in the moonlight, so simple in the moonlight

That's a good one.  Thematically reminds me of these:

"We lost Davy in the Korean War

Still don't know what for

It don't matter anymore..."

Damn John Prine is depressing.   And so good.

You know, just the contribution from someone who has had to deal with a divorce, estranged dad nearly dying and such plus a bunch of the previous songs.

My wife and I separated 2 months ago so I've been listening to some sad music.  Because I'm sad.

The whole "Strange Trails" album by Lord Huron is hauntingly beautiful and melancholy so it has been the soundtrack of the separation for me.

This song, in particular, has resonated with me.

Last concert my ex and I went to was lord Huron. Strange trails is a bad ass album but I can’t listen to it much anymore.

Bleachers has some sad sack lyrics but arranged anthem style. I love them. They helped me get from sad to better but not okay this last year. Now I’m like gangsta rap DGAF so it’s all good.

I bought the first Angels & Airwaves album before I deployed to Iraq in 2006. I went through some really dark shit while I was there and every time I hear any song from that album I go back to it. I know I'm not still there and I'm not reliving it or having flashbacks. Just going over everything in my head. I used to try to avoid listening to it because I didn't want to do that. I've been doing EMDR therapy and trying to work through my shit so I've been pushing myself into a lot of areas internally that I've avoided.

Finger on the trigger by Bleu Edmenson.-2018 Kicked my ass with divorce, mother passing and my job being outsourced.  Thankfully, it never reached this point, but damn..

oh lord please forgive me for what I'm about to do
I'm running on empty and my options are few
You know that I did the best that I can
But I've done hit rock bottom my time is at hand

Because I lost my job
My bills are getting bigger
Cryin' baby bout to lose my mind
Hundred dollar habit I ain't got a penny
My woman ran off with a friend of mine
I can't keep a job cause I'm too **** up

Dhs bout to take my kids
Tryin' to get well keep getting sicker
Sittin' in the parking lot my finger on the trigger

You know I never meant to hurt anyone
And I'll face the consequences for everything I've done
And lord sometimes I wonder if your even there
'Cause my burden is back-breaking and it's all that I can bear

Because I lost my job
My bills are getting bigger
Cryin' baby bout to lose my mind
Hundred dollar habit I ain't got a penny
My woman ran off with a friend of mine

I can't keep a job cause I'm too **** up
Dhs bout to take my kids
Tryin' to get well keep getting sicker
Sittin' in the parking lot my finger on the trigger

siap

You make me weep and wanna die
Just when you said we'd try

Lovin', touchin', squeezin' each other
When I'm alone all by myself
You're out with someone else
Lovin', touchin', squeezin' each other

You're tearin' me apart
Every, every day
You're tearin' me apart
Oh what can I say?
You're tearin' me apart

It won't be long, yes, till you're alone
When your lover, oh, he hasn't come home
Cause he's lovin', who he's touchin',
He's squeezin' another

He's tearin' you apart
Every, every day
He's tearin' you apart
Oh girl what can you say?
Cause he's lovin', touchin' another
Now it's your turn girl to cry
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na

Some bitch was cheating on Steve Perry just when they were getting big.

Whisky Lullaby- Alison Krauss & Brad Paisley

In the Arms of an Angel- Sheryl Crow( seems damned near like a suicide anthem to me.)

It ain't the Whiskey- Gary Allan

Pretty much anything by The Smiths-  Gotdam they focus on the dark side of life...

Good list but Arms of An Angel was Sarah McLachlen (sp)

Lot of good ones already mentioned. One of my favorite Alison Krauss songs, hauntingly beautiful:

Purple Rain by Prince

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams

whoa whoa whoa

Love / hate that song... I was specifically meaning the chick that made that song a dagger in my heart.

A little hyperbole on my side and being dramatic.

Ah. Grazie. I thought maybe she was boning Jimmy Page on the side.

Weezer has lately been doing well, bouncing around in my brain:

All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad (hey, hey)
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)
I love parties, but I don't go
Then I feel bad when I stay home
'Cause I need a friend when I take a walk
I like spacin' out when somebody talks
I wanna be rich, but I feel guilty
I fall in love with everyone who hates me
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad (so mad)
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad (hey, hey)
All my favorite songs are slow and sad (all my favorite songs)
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)
Dreamy morning, walkin' alone by myself
Thinkin' about life, and tryin' to find my way through hell
Sometimes I wish I was on an island (ah, ah, ah)
But then I'd miss the sound of sirens (ah, ah, ah)
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
All my favorite people make me mad (so mad)
Everything that feels so good is bad, bad, bad
All my favorite songs are slow and sad
I don't know what's wrong with me
I don't know what's wrong with me
I don't know what's wrong with me (ooh, ooh, ooh)
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh

Slaid Cleaves

It's New Years Day
Just like the day before
Same old skies of grey
Same empty bottles on the floor
Another year gone by
And I'm thinking once again
How can I take this losing hand
And somehow win
Just give me one good year
To get my feet back on the ground
I've been chasing grace
But grace ain't so easily found
One bad hand can devil a man
Chase him and carry him down
I gotta get out of here
Just give me one good year
I'm burning oil
Engine's running rough
I drive from job to job
But it's never enough
I can't find the will
To just up and get away
Some kind of chains holding me down
To make me stay
Just give me one good year
It's a bitter wind
In your face every day
It's the little sins
That wear your soul away
When you start giving in
Where do the promises all go
Will your darkest hour
Write a blank check on your soul?
Just give me one good year
To get my feet back on the ground
I've been chasing grace
But grace ain't so easily found
One bad hand can devil a man
A good one can turn him around
I gotta get out of here
Just give me one good year

This ode to a dying town always gets me.

Thanks for the Anne Sexton reference. I never knew the backstory. Spent some time reading her poetry and now I like the song even more than I already did.
