June 11, 20214 yr Karen Post0n wrote this one...but Slaid knocks it out of the park. "Hugging my knees, holding my breath". Karen's version is much more upbeat. Edited June 11, 20214 yr by hullabelew
June 11, 20214 yr Last one for today. As Bruce says, "I write sad songs, and slightly faster sad songs." This is the saddest.

June 12, 20214 yr On the banks of the river where the willows hang downAnd the wild birds all warble with a low moaning soundDown in the hollow where the waters run coldIt was there I first listened to the lies that you toldNow I lie on my bed and I see your sweet faceThe past I remember time cannot eraseThe letter you wrote me it was written in shameAnd I know that your conscience still echo’s my nameNow the nights are so long, Lord sorrow runs deepAnd nothing is worse than a night without sleepI’ll walk out alone and look at the skyToo empty to sing, too lonesome to cryIf the ladies were blackbirds and the ladies were thrushesI’d lie there for hours in the chilly cold marshesIf the ladies were squirrel’s with high bushy tailsI’d fill up my shotgun with rock salt and nails

September 28, 20214 yr Been drinking whiskey. Thinking about my mom. Thinking about all the things not said or done. Letting the tears roll when they feel like it. Maybe not when I feel like it.It started with a song on the way home from work. Not ready to share it now. Heard “He called for you in the end” as it wound down. I was there at the end. I couldn’t help her. Don’t know how to get right with that. The songs here aren’t helping. But they’re not hurting, either.

I had to look it up to remember if he pulled the hammer down literally or just slowly over the years with a bottle. He took the hard way. Man this song - I watched Inside Llewyn Davis one night while hanging out with the little bitty newborn infant baby. It became one I would sing to her when giving baths and stuff - she loves vocals like this. I finally put it together. This is a pregnant slave whose man got sold down the river just before she throws herself in.
January 27, 20223 yr I actually prefer the original studio version of this song, but the guitar solos on this version...holy shit.
January 27, 20223 yr Black Eyed Man by the Cowboy Junkies. Margo Timmons brother who writes much of their material does his best stuff when in one of his manic, suicidal, low swings.
January 28, 20223 yr London Grammar.... so talented, but the music can evoke strong depressive emotions. Singer has the voice (and face) of an angel. This one resonates with me personally: edit: damnit, the incredibly evocative video can't be seen anymore for some weird reason. Fucking brilliant song ... here's a live version that seems to take the I-talians aback

I re-watched it a few months ago, and it still felt really powerful in a way that's hard to articulate. Sometimes he tries to do the right thing and he's punished for it (the cat, getting a license to take a job on a ship). And sometimes he's just too broken to do what he knows is morally right (take the exit to Akron, where he knows there's an ex-girlfriend raising his child).

The Coen Bros have several movies that are so great at that... poignancy is a good word, powerful too. I usually am not trying to analyze a film very hard when I watch it the first time at least. Both Llewyn Davis and A Serious Man are movies that (similar but way different than Lebowski) if you tried to describe the plot it would sound like a big mess of who cares. But if you watch it, you find yourself thinking about it over and over again, and it's the experience of the character and how all of those things feed it. I've seen that movies twice now and I feel like i'll probably watch it another 10 times and it will slowly become a favorite. Maybe my favorite in that series of "can't catch a break" is he doesn't have his union card or whatever it is and the song he's working on is dogshit (written by his friend who is a hack sung by the yokel army guy) and he needs the money so he takes the session fee rather than the writing credit for what's going to be a hit, which is egregious insult to injury. Chef's kiss.
January 29, 20223 yr So many I could list here, even with all the great tracks already shared. A staple: This Kinks track could represent the highest of highs or the lowest of lows. We often associate music with moments or people. My two fathers.
January 29, 20223 yr An old Russian flame: A couple of classical selections. There are countless versions of Satie's Gnossiennes, but I prefer this one for its slower pacing. It really turns dark at this tempo. And for the Final Fantasy fans out there: Thanks for humoring me.
January 29, 20223 yr And this one gets me every time (sorry if already posted). Not so much depressing as just heartfelt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
