I've always thought that when an artist produces a Christmas album, they've jumped the shark.  Today I see Eric Clapton has a new album out called Happy Xmas.  Sad day.

Modern day artists, yes. Artists from the 50s and 60s, no.

Wrong.

Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song

Frank Sinatra's A Jolly Christmas

Willie Nelson's Pretty Paper

Beach Boys' Christmas Album

Very Special Christmas, the 80s compilation is cool

and all of these, have about 10 of them, scratched to hell but they still play..

Nat Fucking King Cole

Right. That's my point. The 50s, 60s crooner types like Deano, Sammy Davis Jr, Nat King Cole, Sinatra, hell even Elvis. Christmas songs weren't that far off from their existing genres. Guys like the Beach Boys and Willie were doing Christmas albums at the height of their popularity. Modern artists tend to do them on the downslope of their careers (Dylan, Rod Stewart, Clapton). Plus most modern Christmas albums just plain suck.

I sweatergawd my wife got that album at a White Elephant party in like 1998 and my MIL plays it every single year.  I will not tell her there's a DVD.

This album is legit good.

This track, featuring Leon Bridges, is the best post-60's modern Christmas song I've ever heard.

Es la verdad. Gave it to my wife as a gift last year. Spun it constantly.

We listen to this album every year coming home from Thanksgiving at my in-laws.  I tend to like hard rock/ metal, but this sucker just sounds like Christmastime to me.  Might be eligible for "Things about which i am slightly Embarrassed" thread.

When Love Came Down may be my alltime favorite Christmas song.

This dork jumped the shark a whole helluva lot earlier than his Christmas record

I'm the biggest Beatles/Paul fan there is, and Wonderful Christmastime is a steaming pile of cat shit.

It's fun to play Christmas tunes, people like to hear them, and everyone likes money.

And if you're playing in Texas at Christmas, you gotta play this one. Guaranteed money in the tip jar.

Check out the Phil Spector album I posted above.  You'll like it.

I dig the U2 cover of that song on the Very Special Christmas album posted up above.  That was a great one.

I have it and I do love it. We listen to it about a dozen times every year between thanksgiving and christmas.

I figured you must have it about half a second after I typed that.  But I'm too lazy to edit.

Gotta play this one too!

The answer is the Bing Crosby and Vince Guaraldi albums mentioned earlier.

thread bump apropos the seasons.

my favorite Christmas song versions.  when i hear these songs, i can think of no others who sing it as well, except maybe the Christmas Waltz by peggy lee.  her version comes a close second to sinatra's.

I also love She & Him's Xmas album -- partly because I want to do unholy things to Zooey Deschanel but it's also a great little album to have on while opening presents on Xmas morning. I think the Old 97's have a new Xmas album coming out.
