May 3, 20241 yr This thread is like a reset after spending time in the squalor that is the Deion thread. Excellent example of two different types of humans. Earl always gave his Momma credit for raising him right. I agree.

Original recipe was best. The old greasy, spicy links were the best...ate about a zillion of of those hangover cures. Edited May 3, 20241 yr by SHOOTER12
June 5, 20241 yr Earl scoring the only TD right before halftime and Texas beating OU for the first time in 7 years.
June 5, 20241 yr My brain always had to recalibrate while watching Earl. I would sit and think there was just no way a human of that size could move so gracefully turn around and a be an absolute battering Ram and deliver so much pain. Kind of like watching Vince it didn’t look like he was moving fast but his effortless gazelle like gait, passing people up like it was nothing. We were all so damn lucky to have them both put on the burnt orange. Earl was thunder and lightning all in one package. Edited June 5, 20241 yr by TejasPedro

June 6, 20241 yr Earl Campbell begins this promotional video on Texas Football using clips from the 1981 season. Later in video they show highlights of Earl from NFL. Earl was already gone from Texas in 1981, but there are great highlights from 1981 blOU win, and the Horns 1982 Cotton Bowl victory over Bama.

Robertson returned a fumble 16 yards for a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings in a Rams 34- 17 victory. He only started 6 of the 13 games he played in, losing his starting job to Bob Brudzinski. Robertson may be best known for a play in the 1978 season, when, while attempting to tackle then-rookie Houston Oilers running back (and NFL Hall Of Famer) Earl Campbell, Robertson was head-butted in the sternum and run over by Campbell on his way down the field against the Rams. The play is often shown as a part of NFL Films highlights; especially those concerning Campbell. Imagine being one of the best linebackers of your era (6 pro bowls), but being most famous for getting trucked by Earl Campbell.
September 27, 20241 yr I read somewhere, but am insufficiently motivated to look for it, that Earl feels bad for Robertson for the ubiquity of that video. He said that Robertson was a good LB and it’s a shame that his name is basically associated with that one play, now.

January 11Jan 11 It's hard to imagine making a list where Vince would be my fourth favorite athlete in the room, but here it is.
February 3Feb 3 Tim Campbell, brother of Earl, passed at age 68, due to cancer. A bit undersized, but a helluva' DE. RIP, Tim ! Quote A playmaking defensive end for Longhorns from 1975 to 1979, Tim Campbell ranks second in program history with 39 1/2 career sacks. His nine fumble recoveries are tied for second all-time. Campbell played on arguably the most fearsome defensive line program history in 1977, alongside Outland Trophy winner Brad Shearer and Steve McMichael. His 14 sacks that season were a program record at the time until Kiki DeAyala notched 22 1/2 in 1982. Campbell is the only Texas player with two seasons of at least 13 sacks. https://www.statesman.com/story/sports/college/longhorns/football/2025/02/03/tim-campbell-texas-football-longhorns-de-earl-campbell-brother/78160496007/
February 3Feb 3 That's really sad. I'll be 68 this summer, so it really hits home. I was in attendance at the 1975 Bluebonnet Bowl when he blocked a punt and returned it for a TD, spurring a come-from-behind victory in a top-10 matchup with CU. Thoughts and Prayers to the entire Campbell family. Edited February 3Feb 3 by NeverMarryAStripper

March 15Mar 15 I’ll never forget the #34 Texas burnt orange jersey that I had made at Rooster’s as a child of the 70s. That (34) was his number with the Oilers, so I wanted a UT Campbell jersey. This was around 79-80, but Dad said did you know that Earl wore #20 at UT? I said I wanted 34 with Campbell on the back and Rooster said we can do that, if that’s what you want.Dad couldn’t make a trip to Austin, from Dallas, without visiting Rooster’s, as he was a Trainer/Manager when my Dad was on the 40.Hook’em!!!I wish I still had that 40+ years later.Hook’em!!!

I met him thru work, had to have been in the early to mid aughts. I was chatting with him and of course we veered off-topic, talked about football, told him I used to have a 7-11 Slurpee trading cup of him, he saw my Longhorn koozi and he brought up the hit and the bruise.

Went to UT when Earl did, stayed in Jester, we said hi a few times in the halls, talked maybe a couple of times. I'm short, 5'6". He wasn't that much taller than me, but I swear his thighs were bigger than his waist, and he could damned near cover a coke machine if he stood in front of it. Met Robertson when we both went to a Bill Glass Prison Ministry visit. Got to talk with him some, there. Dude was huge. I probably came up to his armpit. Said he did prison ministry cause when he got in trouble after football nobody wanted to know him, and Hollywood Henderson was the only guy who visited, and it gave him strength to finish his time and make changes. Didn't ask about the Earl hit. He'd packed on some pounds, but I didn't want to poke that bear. About thirty years ago, my crew put out a chimney fire at Earl's house. No biggie, no damage, but he sent the station a case of Earl Campbell sausage.

No biggie, no damage, but he sent the station a case of Earl Campbell sausage. I met Earl about about 12 years ago and got to spend an hour or so chatting in a small group. Two things I remember: 1.) When I shook his hand, my hand just disappeared. Totally engulfed in his massive paw 2.) He had to get up and take a piss, and it took him five minutes to get up with a walker and make it across the room with help from his son Christian. Sad as fuck to see, he was hurting. But that was before his last surgeries and I think he was getting around better after that. That body went through hell and back dishing out all that punishment. It was a few months before he was honored at halftime in 2012. You can see how immobile he was in that video and it was worse when I met him. https://youtu.be/b9sWor5AWcQ?si=xuTSeDUwwH_pnh95&t=21
