yutu sounds like something a disney movie would name a super typhoon villain.

Was it forecasted to become a 5?

The empathy part of my brain has entirely been supplanted by the pop culture part of my brain.  As soon as I click on the link, I go from concerned to "two torpedoes slammed into her side, Chief."

Zactly.  Don't matter, we delivered the bomb.

Damn, sustained winds of 180 MPH is crazy.  That's a wind field of an EF-3 tornado tens of miles wide.

So Harvey Weinstein?

While this is true, tornadic winds are an entirely different animal from hurricane winds.

I immediately went to Steve Martin in Three Amigos. “You two, look up here!  Look up here!”

Go on? Tornado wind is a much shorter duration. What am I missing?

Tornadic winds, due to a much smaller vortex of circulation and convective uplift, will always put a greater wind damage effect on a structure/terrain due to angular momentum.

Este, also, tornadic winds can have extremely violent bursts of energy resulting in absurd, but brief, wind increases. Some studies have shown instantaneous winds can get above Mach 1!

I can fap to that.

Yes, I realize tornado winds are different. I posted the thought to illustrate the seriousness of the situation.

I had to get a CNMI driver's license in order to dive in Saipan. /Notaparticularlycsb

Hope it doesn't get too fucked up.

Also, tornado winds can rip Helen Hunt's top off.

Always had a soft spot for her.

Any chance, the winds push the island to a new spot or the island flips from the waves?

You should be good.  By all appearances Guam was fine.  That is a crappy flight when you are coming from the mainland U.S.

Thank god it didn’t flip over.

I used to to work with a guy from Saipan.

My grandparents moved to Saipan for a couple of years when my grandfather retired so this hits close to home -- well, their home ... their home many, many years ago ... they moved back though ... my grandmother wasn't a fan ... and now they're both dead. But still close to home.

Also, the city of Austin is considering adding Saipan as a sister city:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saipan

Despite an annual rainfall of 80 to 100 inches (2,000 to 2,500 mm), the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation(CUC), the local government-run water utility company on Saipan, is unable to deliver 24-hour-a-day potable water to its customers in certain areas.

Ha, this jogs a memory. My grandparents would've been there in the late 80's/early 90's and I recall them saying that they had to fill up the bathtub with water each morning before leaving the house.

I lived on Guam for 3 years back in the day, so this hits close to home. Seriously though, when I was there we never had a direct typhoon hit, it ALWAYS veered north and hit Saipan and Tinian. Looks like the same thing happened again.

Son, you don't know whether you're shot, fucked, powder-burnt or snake-bit.

( I know that was spoken to a different character, it's still one of my favorite lines in the whole damn movie.)
