December 8, 20187 yr Just moved here and if Vic and Anthony’s is in the top 3, from 2 to 3 better be a big drop. That wasn’t any better than a Ruth’s Chris.
January 4, 20196 yr We went to Pappa's downtown before Christmas and it was top notch. Service, food and wine were all excellent. It wasn't cheap, but I didn't leave feeling like I had been violated (from a value stand point) as is the case at Ruth's Chris or Flemings. They have two Master sommeliers on staff in their group and that means a shit ton of advanced sommeliers working there.
December 5, 20196 yr Needs an update here. Pappas is always killer. Del Frisco's is $ as is Steak 48!
November 18, 20205 yr A truly “best meal” night at Vic & Anthony’s tonight. Champagne, oysters, and caviar, followed by a Bourgogne and Wagyu steaks. Blantons to finish. Damn good night.
November 24, 20205 yr I will say that the Pappas Bros downtown has always been a fantastic experience. From service to ambiance to food to wine, just top notch. Be prepared to pay though.
January 6, 20214 yr I like Del Frisco's Double Eagle better than Pappas Bros. Del Frisco's bone in ribeye is a great piece of meat.
March 25, 20214 yr I'm planning a post Rodeo feast this weekend at Goode Co Seafood. The wife gets grilled oysters and seafood, I get crawfish and steak. We both get Damn Goode Margaritas. Best of both worlds. Edited March 25, 20214 yr by billfromlaketravis

April 4, 20214 yr When looking for a quiet and or intimate steak dinner I opt for Brenner's off the Katy Fwy. About 10 tables in the main dining area. Good place to take the parentals. Edited April 4, 20214 yr by RollLeft
April 5, 20214 yr Best filet mignon in the city? I'm trying to eat leaner steaks. Ask your wife, mother or sister.

August 18, 20214 yr Locked and loaded for Vic & Anthony’s tomorrow. Somebody else is paying, so I’ll order the most expensive steak on the menu. What sides should I be on the look out for?
September 10, 20223 yr My dad had a gift card for Perry’s, and it was avg at best bread - very good French onion soup - avg to below avg. the cheese on top wasn’t correct salad - horrible. It wasn’t a wedge and it was drowning. The bacon looked like pre cooked steaks - meh I’ll go back for their Friday lunch, but never for dinner. Edited September 10, 20223 yr by tx 3 putt

As a rule, 99% of steakhouses drown their wedge salads in dressing. I don’t think I’ve ordered a steak at Perry’s. Appetizers, a steak salad or two, but always always the Friday pork chop. I have a thing at The Palm downtown on Thursday. I haven’t been to the new location yet. I’m not sure if somebody else is paying. If it’s light appetizers or some shit like that, I’ll bounce after an hour. Edited September 13, 20223 yr by billfromlaketravis
September 13, 20223 yr Big-time steak places are so boring. Make a meal out of the appetizer/salad page. Foie gras, steak tartare, shrimp, oysters, caesar salad with lots of anchovies. Maybe a great dessert or two? Errybody on Surly knows how to cook a great Big-time steak on their own. YMMV.
September 13, 20223 yr I've always thought Perry's tastes like they're getting their food out of a Sysco bag and just heating it up.

Yep, they are always looking for ways to reduce prep time and kitchen staff, so they came up with some pretty goofy experimental products. I honestly wouldn’t put anything past them.
September 20, 20223 yr Steak tartare at The Palm was excellent. They make a mean whiskey sour as well. The lollipop lamb chops were the most over salted piece of meat I’ve tasted. I don’t love the location by the House of Blues, but it’s pretty nice inside.
November 16, 20223 yr I sat through some bullshit for a free lunch at Morton’s Downtown this week. Filet mignon was on point. Good crust, well seasoned, and tender. Excellent mashed potatoes as well. But for some reason they use frozen green beans. I mean $42 a plate and frozen vegetables. What in the actual f***? I wasn’t a fan of the key lime pie either. Solid cup of coffee. The restaurant was packed, they seem to be doing pretty good business.

July 4, 20241 yr Went to Georgia James for our anniversary. It's was excellent, but I just have a hard time eating a deliciously expensive cut of steak that I can rival at home on my cast iron with a reverse sear. The ambeance, drinks, appetizers, and of course the occasion made it worth it though. Definitely a special occasion place unless you are Surly 1%.

Old one was so much better. The new one looks like the all day dining venue at a generic Westin hotel. I find it to be a soulless space. I ate at the original location dozens of times. I’ve darkened the door of the new space twice and I live less than a mile away.

I mostly agree with you, but it’s tough to find dry aged steaks for sale outside of restaurants now. And if you find them, you’re breaking even. Might as well let B&B cook it for you. HEB, Whole Foods, and Central Market(?) killed off their dry aged steaks at the butcher’s counter after Covid. Prior to 2020, Whole Foods sold a 30 or 45 day dry aged ribeye for under $25 a pound. What a glorious time to be alive. I didn’t have a grill at my old place in the Heights, but I could make a great steak with a cast iron pan on the stove.

September 21, 20241 yr I fully expect to get flamed, but the bone in ribeye at Saltgrass slams and goes. At $46, it’s half the price of the high end places. If you’re too ashamed to be spotted at at a Landry’s reataurant, their delivery fee is only $4.99.

I would love to hate in that place but I just can’t.
October 22, 20241 yr Longhorn Steakhouse has really good, large lamb chops during Easter, and they make a fairly good cheap lunch steak, but I’d stay away from the high ticket items.

The Memorial and 59 locations are very solid. Shepherd is more of a bar. I worked over by the one in Memorial for years. They used to serve a bowl of steak soup for like $10 and a tall Shiner Bock for $2-3. Good times. Top 5 soup for me. They made it from scratch with steak trimmings. I wish they’d bring it back. November 4Nov 4 Stayed at the Four Seasons downtown and wanted a steak. Pappas Bros was closed on Sunday and Morton's on Fannin/Walker area is a place I belly up to when I'm alone, but was having a colleague with me. I remembered Vic & Anthony's is a sloooowww dinner, like it took 3-3.5 hours the last time I was there with one other dude and it was just basic steak and sides...so I set the context to say this: Decided to stay in house and eat at Toro Toro (https://www.fourseasons.com/houston/dining/restaurants/toro-toro/) and it was CHEEKS, my dudes. Was really disappointed with the service and the crowd, felt more like a Waffle House crowd after midnight (and maybe that is just a reflection of downtown Houston). Got the bone in bison and it was pretty mediocre. The sushi was actually really good though.
