Snark Trek. Seth is enjoying this a lot. And the numerous ST vets behind the scenes are helping to make this awesome. Legit feel like I’m watching a modern TNG reboot sometimes.
God no. Orville ten billion light years mo betta than that sappy ass TNG dreck.
Bullseye. Seth is drawing from a lot of sci-fi heavyweights while keeping the series "gender neutral".  I'm sure they are using parody to keep from getting sued for the obvious similarities, but just to be clear, The Orville does not exist in the ST universe. It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether.
We will find out later that The Orville exists in Known Space.
I've watch it since it first aired.  Obvious TNG feel to it with humor and real life mixed in.  I'm not surprised that some of the episodes were based on un-aired Star Trek episodes.
Some of the season 2 episodes were duds but overall, it is a strong series.  This latest 2 part story has been great.  Hope they renew it for season 3.
Side note: I really like Discovery too.  Happy that we are getting two good sci-fi shows right now with the expanse coming back on Amazon as well.
Does NOT feel like TNG at all. Thank god. Better science than TNG. More realistic characters and the Captain is not a bullet headed pompous twit like Picard.

Well now you done it.

VINTAGE EPISODES.  Shades of TNG fighting the Borg, Stargate fighting the replicators.

I love this show.

Pretty solid episode.

Just a walk in the park, Kazansky!

Got an actual LOL from me. As did Isaac’s “deactivation complete”.

I unfortunately watched part of a youtube fan made pre-show and they were throwing around guesses of what was going to happen. Someone in chat laid out the whole thing. The hosts shot that theory down, but whoever it was had obviously seen the episode. I won't make that mistake again.

Absolutely this.  I think it's the perfect mix of modern snarkiness, and TNG era campy.  Fits right in there with people who miss the old Star Trek.

But I like Discovery too for different reasons.

What baffles my mind is the line in the sand that some have drawn against one show or the other.  Like you can't like both of them.

Another great episode. Is it just me or did this one have shades of Firefly mixed in with the mystery girl?

Yeah it was another solid episode...a bit down from the last 2 weeks(as would be expected after how good that 2 parter was)

I'll be the one to say it, but Discovery had the far superior episode IMO(of course I'm an old school Trekkie, and call back of the episode swung the momentum for me)

Orville has picked up steam.  I'm just glad we have two good SciFi shows on right now.  Hope they are both renewed for season 3.

3

Actual Star Trek
TNG-era Star Trek wannabe
BSG-esque space opera (Expanse)

True, the Expanse is quite good as well.  I believe it comes back on Amazon Prime in the fall?

Does it involve an airplane and a treadmill?

Yup, another homage.

Love it.

Also a new ST series coming up, surrounding Picard. Going to be on CBS AA. I can't remember all the details, but IIRC it will first air later this year? Discovery has been fucking nuts. Loving the shit out of it. But that's another thread.

Orville has me hooked. It's a tick cheese, with some humor, and an interestingly deep intermingling with characters. I agree not every episode is a 10, but at worst it's a 5 and only a very few are there. The 2-parter was insane, as was the doc fucking Issac. Series starting off with Kelly fucking an alien and spinning down Mercer's world was a solid beginning point. It wasn't a breakout episode, but most pilots aren't overly great. Very few shows can grab you by the balls from the start, and never let go. Too much character introduction and setups need to happen.

If they can keep from fucking it up, I think they could have a solid run. It won't be leading the ratings, but it will be solid enough to let it run its natural course.

Agree with all this.

This is Seth's baby, he's been wanting to do a sci-fi show since he was a kid.  He's a huge Trek fan.

I think the California Film Commission has already promised like $16 million in tax breaks to Fox for a season 3.  The fact that Brannon Braga (TNG, Voyager, Enterprise) is one of the producers is why it feels so Trek-y.

The fact that the first episode started off with a tribute to Archer’s beagle was nice.

Yeah mine is always licking his crotch in the background too.  Fucking gross.

Definitely, but there’s touch or reality mixed in that is usually ignored with any ST series. Mundane shit, but nice minor touches to round it all out.

The crew interactions feel a lot more realistic than any of the ST series.  People doing stupid shit and/or getting on each other’s nerves.

Well this was my least favorite episode. It wasn't bad, just very TNG touchy-feely stuff which was my least favorite part of TNG.

I thought it was awesome.  I love the fact that they are not afraid to have episodes without big conflicts and concentrate on the characters.

I thought it was good. Shows how far Gordon has come and grown up since Mercer first recruited him. Boris and Clydon smoking their asses off was amusing.

Did anyone else think they were going to find that picture at the end on her phone? It wouldn't have really made sense but I thought that's where they were going.

Do we have to hear Gordon sing every episode now?

Also no mention of Tuvok appearing right in the opening? Another ST alum shows up

I was surprised that they didn’t look her up and find out she was Gordon’s ancestor.

That was a nice touch for sure.

They are on the Orville, not the Arkansas.

Yeah close to the same for me.  About 5 minutes in I looked to the wife and said "Seen this episode before...like 27 years ago".  Called exactly what would happen.

Actually the Moclan addicted to Nicotine was funnier.

But the "WTF" Joke was probably the funniest joke.

The episodes seem to be getting better and better each week for me, I love the character exploration stuff though, so there is that.

Yeah, that was solid. Like I said it wasn't bad, just not my favorite. Grimes is a good actor and deserves to carry an episode now and then. I see Gordon as a version of Wash from Firefly. He just needs to find his Zoe. He is a leaf in the wind.

Just thought of something. Will they ever work in Galaxy Quest?

Every part of the Moclan smoking bit was hilarious. Klyden eating the cigarette, when Talla walks in and their ash trays are just piled up with tons of cigarettes, when Bortus dumps the pillow out... For whatever reason I could not stop laughing at that stuff.

It was one of my favorite episodes so far.

Something that bothers me though is that while they have had episodes that illustrate both love and porn addiction in the sim, in both instances, the "cure" seemed way too easy.  There is no way in hell that a good portion of the crew wouldn't be enjoying some simulated sexy time on the reg.  There would have to be strict limits in place for sim usage.  For some people, a simulated mate would be preferable to the real thing for many reasons (see the "Wives..." thread).

4 different crew members have used the holo to get freaky in some variation this season alone:

Gordon
Bortis
Isaac
Claire

You know it's a regular thing.

I'd never come out of that thing. "Oh what's today, Tuesday? Think I'll play 36 at Pebble Beach and then take 1984 era Christie Brinkley to pound town."

Isaac and Claire shared the experience, so that is a different thing.  Gordon and Bortis were both addicted to simulated entities, and were both able to walk away a little too easily, in my opinion.

Exactly.  How does reality ever live up to the unlimited fantasy?
