Homeschooled kids get ranked based on SAT scores as a range of the incoming class. A 1300 on the SAT is way too low to qualify for automatic admissions if history is any indicator.
February 15Feb 15 Popular Post Holy S! I love all of y'all. My son got in. We were sweating. 3.85 GPA and 1410 on SAT (I think; don't quote me), but in an IB high school, he was "only" top 8%. He'll be in RTF. I'm so happy for him. He's slightly on the spectrum, so extremely quiet and shy. I've never heard him raise his voice or even cuss. He's had at least 8 job interviews over the past 3 months with no offers. I'm under the impression that his demeanor was a hindrance. And NOW.... a true Longhorn. Holy shit! My son is a Longhorn!
February 16Feb 16 Just realized. My son will be at Texas for Arch; my wife was attending Tennessee when Peyton was QB. Weird.

What is his plan with RTF? Production? Director, editor? It is a tough road right now. I did RTF(graduated 2000) and only know a handful of people who actually went into the industry. One of my best friends was actually very successful, and went from PA, to 2nd 2nd AD, to 2nd AD to 1st AD and even a few director gigs. But he also was never able to build a family (6 months in one city, 9 months in the next city will do that), and nowadays he says for the studios it's not a question of "if" they produce overseas, it's "which overseas country are we filming in that is the cheapest?" The US production market has gotten priced out and he hasn't had a production gig in 2 years - especially since post-COVID the streaming services overproduced a ton of content that they're just now getting through releasing.

He's taken film all four years in high school. He's definitely doing something behind the camera. He loves the writing and directing aspect of film. His best friend's mom, also a Texas alum, has made a pretty good career in creating content - editing, ads - for various businesses. So, prob something along those lines.
February 19Feb 19 My kid will be attending next year so I have taken him to campus beyond the stadium a few times the last few months to really look around and tour especially during the day while classes are in session. Campus has a different feel with Speedway being pedestrian now. Aka the Yellow Brick Road. It is really great. It is a little disorienting with the new buildings too but I got used to it. Super excited for my kid.
February 19Feb 19 daughter got in. so from alum --> longhorndad for me. mccombs. sure is a hella lot more competitive now. I was in tx stadium at the big12 championship (the non-vince one ) and Dr Robins whiff on Evil Roy in the CB. My memories arent that great.

My kid wanted an urban environment though so he is pleased with it.

The guy behind the counter kept repeating to us every time that it was grande mart not prontos anymore. Became a running joke, the humor though might have also been enhanced by the drinking of the 40's.
February 20Feb 20 Both my kids live in dumpy rental houses just north of Crown & Anchor. My son, whose acceptance to UT I still question, somehow managed to rent a house next door to his big sister without knowing she lives there. I cannot think of a more ideal living situation. It just screams "independent undergrad housing". They can help each other out, go to each other's parties, the price isn't insane (~ $800 each per month) and they're not bound by Greek or dorm (campus or otherwise) bullshit. (Both of them lived in west campus dorms prior. Man, take the dumpy rental house.)

Her younger brother is going the CAP route and will be at UTSA next fall. His twin sister is going to OSU... can't win them all (actually, it is perfect for her given her field of interest). The time from moving in in 2021 to now has shot by, as I am sure the 4 years for the next two will.

April 29Apr 29 Let me know if any Surly UT kids need a place for the Summer. My son is in a 4x4 apartment at Hilltop with parking. This runs me $1445 per month and it is leased through July, but he ain't gonna be there. Looking to cut my losses and a sweet deal awaits. Probably needs to be a male as the other roommates are male, but some hot co-ed would probably work too and may entitled to an additional discount. Edited April 29Apr 29 by cabowabo

May 5May 5 A little advice for those with kids planning to live on West Campus. All of these high rises with "amenities" that they will come to you in the fall, frantically telling you that you have to act fast, are a rip off. The condos of our past still exist and are plenty nice. Also, you can wait until spring. West Campus is overloaded with inventory. By late April, you can negotiate. And guess what, there are plenty of amenities at this nearby school called UT-Austin, which is just a short walk away. No offense intended for anyone who's forking out the dough for their kid to live in such luxury (and someone should totally sublease the place from @Cabowabo for the summer). But when I was told it would be an extra $50 per month for a room with a window, I balked. We have a friend who is paying $1,600 per month for one of these places. Our son has a 2/2 condo with a friend of his and is paying just a little over half that amount including parking. Alas, he will not have 24-7 access to a golf simulator. Edited May 5May 5 by dcbc

Between my two current UT students they lived at 3 different West Campus towers. They all sucked. Mid-century prison once you get inside, just a dorm with a fancy name. They now live just north of Crown & Anchor in adjacent rental houses (because my son is an idiot and had no idea he was renting a house next to his sister), and they love it.

WTF? Because "amenities." Also, it sounds like he opted for no window. A friend of ours referred us to the realtor he uses to list a condo his parents own in West Campus. She is an absolute gem if anyone needs help finding a place. I mean she'd negotiate, walk away from stubborn landlords, you name it. She is patient and waited out the market for several months to find us a good deal. She also mentioned that condos in West Campus generally are going for less than those on North Campus (I mean, I'm sure you could go far enough north to disprove that theory). May 5May 5 We give our daughter a fixed amount per month for rent, utilities, food, etc. That amount doesn't cover everything and she has to budget. She chooses where she lives and how much she's willing to pay for it. She's been living the past two years in a west campus house with three other roommates.

August 25Aug 25 Moved in Baby Girl to SRD last weekend. Moved Soph Lil’ Nigel into his new place (not in Texas) and that took most of the week, then came back to Austin Saturday for sorority “Bid Day.” We are spent. Glad rush is over. It was stressful for her (and most of the girls I am sure). I told her now she can concentrate on school and she looked at me like I was crazy.

August 25Aug 25 Yep. That was my least favorite trip to Austin. Didn't really hit until we got home late last night. My wife handled it surprisingly well. My autistic 13 year-old, not so much.
August 25Aug 25 Dropped off the last of our three boys this weekend on the 40 acres. Bittersweet but we are ready. Wife retired last Friday and I did couple of years ago. It’s go time! House is so quiet. And clean! Glorious.
August 29Aug 29 Well, we're feeling kinda stupid right now. My daughter is trying to wrap up her bachelor's degree while balancing work and touring, and was just now advised (with 12 hours to go) that some courses are available as online extension courses. All she has left is her minor in business, and guess what? Her remaining courses are on the list. God knows how much she had to unnecessarily slow-play her degree because we didn't know about this. Check it out if that option makes sense for your kid: UT Extension
