First degree murder:

James Fields Guilty of First-Degree Murder in Death of Charlottesville Protester

Quote

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — After deliberating for more than seven hours on Friday, a Charlottesville jury convicted James Fields Jr. of first-degree murder, finding that the Ohio man intentionally drove his car into a crowd of protesters at a white nationalist rally last year, killing one woman and injuring nearly 40 others.

The jury, which heard testimony in a case in which hate and racism were as much on trial as Mr. Fields, also found the 21-year-old guilty of five counts of aggravated malicious wounding, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of leaving the scene of a crime. He faces up to life in prison for the death of Heather Heyer, 32, and for the aggravated woundings, and up to 20 years for the other offenses.

Friday’s verdict provides some closure in a case that cast a national spotlight on Charlottesville, the scene chosen by racists and anti-Semites to rally for their cause, near a Confederate monument that some city leaders were trying to remove. The August 2017 Unite the Right rally was marked by violent clashes between counterprotesters and white nationalists, some of whom were convicted earlier this year.

The nine-day trial featured days of emotional testimony from victims who were seriously injured in the crash, including a man who pushed his girlfriend out of the way, bearing the brunt of the impact himself, and a single mother who suffered two broken legs and a broken back. Many of the victims returned to the courtroom day after day to listen to other witnesses, and jurors saw them hugging and comforting one another.During the trial, prosecutors introduced evidence that Mr. Fields intended to commit harm when he drove from Ohio to attend the rally, which featured neo-Nazis bearing swastikas and Ku Klux Klan members. In a text message exchange with his mother before the rally, Mr. Fields was told to “be careful.” “We’re not the one

who need to be careful,” he replied in a message that also included a photo of Adolf Hilter.

Prosecutors also showed the jury a cartoon that Mr. Fields had shared months earlier on Instagram of a car ramming into a crowd, with the words, “You have the right to protest but I’m late for work.” Other evidence included recordings of conversations that Mr. Fields had with his mother after his arrest, in which he described the counterprotesters at the rally as a “violent gang of terrorists,” and derided Ms. Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, as an “anti-white liberal” who should be viewed as an enemy.

Mr. Fields’s defense lawyers did not dispute that he drove his car into the crowd, but claimed that he “acted out of fear” rather than malice, highlighting the scuffles and clashes that took place earlier that day between Unite the Right participants and anti-racism activists.

“There’s no evidence he came prepared to do any harm,” said John Hill, a defense lawyer, during the trial. The defense called Dwayne Dixon, an anti-racism activist, to testify, and he acknowledged shouting at a gray car while he had an AR-15 rifle slung over his shoulder.

But video footage from that day showed Mr. Fields’s car idling, unmolested at an intersection, and even backing up out of the camera frame before it sped ahead into the crowd.

The prosecutor, Nina-Alice Antony, argued during the trial that Mr. Fields clearly had “specific intent to kill a human being,” even if he had not singled out any particular person in the crowd.

Mr. Fields will be sentenced after victims give impact statements in this case. He also faces the death penalty in a second trial on federal hate crimes charges.

That fuckin' Nazi was found guilty on all counts. That's great news. Hopefully he'll never taste freedom again.

RIP Heather.

I hope he doesn't enjoy "bang you in the ass prison" as much as his roommate will.

The suspects arrested are 20-year-old Brian Colaneri, 18-year-old Andrew Crysel, 19-year-old Vincent Vetromile, and an unidentified 16-year-old. The suspects planned the attack on Discord, a chat service usually used by gamers, police said at a press conference Tuesday.

So much economic anxiety!

Yeah, gonna have to agree.  How many Trump supporters watch Empire, let alone would be able to recognize this dude on the street?

If nothing else, I hope we can take a life lesson from this atrocity.......Nothing good comes from seeking out a subway sandwich at 2AM.

need more details but him being on Empire seems unimportant in regards to why he was attacked. From the initial CNN report:

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs," according to police.

Sources directly connected to Jussie tell TMZ, the actor arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday, and at around 2 AM he was hungry and went to a Subway. We're told when he walked out, someone yelled, "Aren't you that f***ot 'Empire' n*****?"

The 2 men -- both white and wearing ski masks -- viciously attacked Jussie as he fought back, but they beat him badly and fractured a rib. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left they yelled, "This is MAGA country."

Ski masks.  In Chicago during the polar vortex.  Sure.

Well that’s what I get for only checking cnn...

Someone who has no idea how the world really is would come up with this story and find it plausible.

The Chicago Police Department said in a statement Thursday:

“Both the victim and the manager made independent statements to detectives that they were on the phone with one another during the alleged attack. CPD has no reason to doubt these claims. Detectives however were not able to independently verify the statements as cell phone records were not provided to investigators when asked. Therefore we are not able to confirm this.”

So  two MAGA hat wearing Trump supporters were wandering Chicago at 2am on one of the coldest nights ever recorded looking for Jussie Smollett, while carrying bleach and a noose...

Now that the weather is getting warmer my main concern is that these 2 vicious criminals will increase the frequency of their attacks on obscure gay entertainers

The timing and context of your drive by comments is very telling.

This all seems legit.  A barely known actor who hates trump gets attacked on street with hundreds of cameras by two white MAGA supporters who tie a rope around his neck and throw bleach on him.

Hes talking to his manager on his cell phone at the time of the attack and the manager says he heard them yell MAGA and attack.  But he doesn’t bother calling the police.  When the cops arrive 50 minutes after the attack the victim asks that they turn their vest cams off. He claims the rope was still around his neck an hour later.  No evidence of bleach on his clothes.  He refuses to turn over his phone and so does his manager.  So not possible to corroborate the 2 am phone call he and his manager claim they were on during the time or the attack.

Seems as legit as the invisible ink graffiti on Lebron’s mansion.

Once again the media falls for the fallacy of who is winning the competition. But they do it because it drives ratings and ultimately that is their job.

Did the Maga hat guy choke someone because he’s racist? Did the maga hat guy stare down the Indian drummer because he’s racist?  Fuck if I know.Ultimately who really cares what the motivation was. Choking bad. Drum bangin not so much bad. Stare downs become less important after middle school unless you become a boxer or wrestler.

As if one side or the other would somehow “prove” which side is right and wrong if we could “figure it out.” It’s all total bullshit. Meanwhile, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, Drudge, Breitbart, et al just keep cashing those checks.

It’s time for the American public that is not currently sworn to idiocy by proclaiming trump as some sort of savior, when in fact he is an ammoral con man on the verge of complete dementia due to narcissism and syphilis, to reject this self destructive asshole and at least try to start the healing process for the country to begin.

You’ve had more whiskey than me.

Have you figured out who killed Kennedy yet? I still maintain it was a shooter from the Dal Tex building with the head kill shot.

Other than pretty much everyone on this thread and all media except the superstars at super legit TMZ saying “yeah....this sounds fishy as hell so we’re not gonna run with it, and let’s see how the facts bear out,” Jonny’s got a great story to latch onto here. Pretty much perfect for Johnny, actually.

Right, so now fake news is not a story?  I know I need a new news feed, but this “maga” story keeps popping up....
