Baldinucci is fucking great but expensive, so we opt for Dominoes. My son was hanging out in Martingale on the river and they bought a bunch of Gatti's and the leftovers made it home to me. Its not great pizza but I took a bite and immediately felt like I was 10 years old and at the end of season party for Western Hills little league. Gatti's use and ratio of provolone and mozzarella make the flavor so recognizablle.

November 24Nov 24 If you're in Kingsland hit the Gattis lunch buffet. It's like going in a time machine.

I'm not expecting much, but I imagine we'll give it a try. Anybody hit up the Burnet Road location yet? They look to be open full time but don't take reservations, and my wife and I were thinking about going one night this week. We've never been to the original location in Cedar Park.

Fajitas and margs are damn good if you like mesquite wood flavor. Cilantro butter for the chicken is great. Good hand made tortillas and a ninfas like green sauce. Cheaper than Lupe, Pappasitos etc *Cedar park location - haven't tried burnet

November 25Nov 25 Fuck it. We're going to give Mama Betty's a shot this evening. I'll let you know how many Sysco trucks we see in the parking lot.
November 25Nov 25 I like Mama Betty’s-I’d rather have a meal there than fucking Le Calamar that everyone on the austin food subreddit continually touts. There’s an insufficient number of “this is good enough for the money” restaurants in Austin, particularly (somewhat) central. Also, maybe they’ll pull some overflow from El Dorado and I’ll be able to eat there again without a 1.5 hour wait.

On the money note, in looking online at the Mama Betty's menu, the prices seem generally reasonable. But $58.99 for fajitas for two? What the fuck????

November 25Nov 25 I dunno . . . $18 for a 3 enchilada plate seems a bit steep when Y Mas will sell you 2 for $9-ish. Just up the road, and probably way better.
November 26Nov 26 Mama Betty’s was pretty good, not great. If an Y Mas aesthetic is your thing, it’s not the place for you.

Yeah, I think I said it upthread, but it's more of a girls' happy hour/drinks kind of place. That kind of joint has its place, and like you I've found it to be pretty good but not great. EyM is a classic Tex-Mex dive, I hope and pray it never changes and never closes.

But I do find it hilarious that the assholes of surly jump all over a place like Torchy's for being gringo tacos with the high prices and non-traditional fillings, but are AOK with summer squash and duck confit tacos that cost $10 each... Ahem. I am an asshole of Surly who shits on BOTH Torchy's and places that serve $10 duck confit tacos. Serve fucking real mexican food made by real mexicans who flip tortillas with their goddamned hands and charge the appropriate price. On 11/10/2025 at 3:50 PM, LCHorn said: IAgain, this is the snob in me but they would be a dime or dozen in Mexico City or Oaxaca “You nixtamalize your tortillas? Nixta's gimmick is "we make tortillas like literally 11,000 joints on every corner all over Mexico, and that makes us super special?" Fuck that. Decent fresh tortillas should be a goddamned baseline. And it's not that fucking hard, goddamned mexicans have been doing it for 1,000 fucking years. On 11/12/2025 at 1:03 PM, utee94 said: It's a chicks getting cocktails Tex-Mex kind of place. Because.... 3 hours ago, South Austin said: Mama Betty’s was pretty good, not great. If an Y Mas aesthetic is your thing, it’s not the place for you. ....my wife is not a fan of Enchiladas Y Mas. I think it just strikes her as too "low rent." She prefers La Mancha (which is.....fine...okay food, but man, do we always run into West Austin gringos we know, which she enjoys), although I HAVE gotten her into El Nuevo Mexico at the end of Anderson where it hits Lamar. And I recommend it. Good mixed crowd (gringos for tex-mex, as well as real mexicans eating there), damned solid cheese enchiladas, and other stuff. My mexican handyman says their menudo is the real deal, so I'll be trying it soon. And apparently, their breakfasts are outstanding.

But Tex Mex ain't fancy feast.
November 27Nov 27 Brisket, I hear ya on La Mancha. We eat there a few times a year and ALWAYS run into old neighborhood school parents (HP/Lamar/McCallum). I like the vibe of the place but the food is definitely second tier.

December 8Dec 8 Went to the Blue Genie Art Bazaar and decided to give the Mama Betty's a shot on the way home despite the reviews above. Food was very mid. Wife said 5/10 at best, which is spot on. Plus they screwed up her order, which wasn't even that complicated. We didn't have any drinks, so can't comment on the booze, but the margarita lists looked pretty damn good. And the space itself is beautiful. They must have spent a shitload on the build out. It gives off Uncle Julio vibes, and not in a good way. Blue Genie Art Bazaar was as kickass as ever though. Some of the best people watching in Austin, plus really good stocking stuffers.

December 8Dec 8 Homeslice is mediocre but it's nowhere near "worst pizza ever". I'm fine with eating it when someone else pays for it.
