Yeah, I've never in my life ordered anything other than a large.  You gotta get deep dish, and the whole wheat crust is delicious, it's actually better than the standard white.  So it's a thick, substantial pizza pie.

But let's do some math.  Conan's website says the small is 10" and the large is 14".  So total area of the small is 98.5 in^2,  and the total area of the large is 138 in^2.  So half the small is 49 in^2.  Back in my high school and college days I could just about eat a large by myself.  But these days I'm older and wiser and I'm also not a great big fat person, so usually 2 out of 8 slices on a large, is enough for me.  That's 34.5 in^2 which is less than half of the small, so the small would be sufficient for 2 people.  If you wanted to do 3 slices, you'd get 51.8 in^2 out of a large, which is slightly more than the 49 in^2 that represents half of a small.

In conclusion, the small is probably okay for two, as long as you are not great big fat people.

But seriously, why?  Just order the large and make sure you have enough for some leftovers.  It's great the next day.

Dangit, squared the wrong variable in my formula.  Try this"

But let's do some math.  Conan's website says the small is 10" and the large is 14".  So total area of the small is 314in^2,  and the total area of the large is 615 in^2.  So half the small is 157 in^2.  Back in my high school and college days I could just about eat a large by myself.  But these days I'm older and wiser and I'm also not a great big fat person, so usually 2 out of 8 slices on a large, is enough for me.  That's 154 in^2 which is slightly less than half of the small, so the small would be sufficient for 2 people.  If you wanted to do 3 slices, you'd get 231 in^2 out of a large, which is more than the 157 in^2 that represents half of a small.

Same conclusion though-- get the large and have extra.

Seriously.  The family friendly pizzeria of our childhood already fucking exists.  It's Conan's. Deep dish for the adults, thin cheese pizza for the kids, the tastiest but unhealthiest side salad you

As a UTEE98, you're giving us a bad name!  You could try a 3rd time with the radius, and include some price/in^2 analysis to see if the large is actually cheaper or not.

ha!  true again.  I don't think I'll try again.

Final conclusion-- get the large.  It is irrelevant whether or not it's cheaper.  It is bigger, and that is what's important.

I go for the Deep Pan Veggie add pepperoni and have them cook it extra long so there’s no chance of soggy crust.

Usually I will eat about half and save the rest (wrap in foil and reheat in cold oven for 25 minutes as the heat is brought to 350).

At one point Pinthouse Pizza had their pricing screwed up and smaller pies were cheaper than large pies (per unit semi-delicious pizza).  They fixed that.

What is this "small" of which you speak?

See, one of life's great pleasures is when the family is outta town.  You order a Savage, all the way -- add the jalapenos and anchovies.  And yeah, you order a large.  You eat a few slices for dinner.

Then you eat a slice cold for breakfast on the way to work the next day.

Then maybe another coupla slices for dinner that night.  Cold?  Heated up on the griddle?  Hey man, dealer's choice!

Get the whole wheat crust, too.

I did that once, under the premise that it would be healthier.  I ended up with explosive gastrointestinal distress, the kind where sweat pores off you and you can imagine passing a kidney stone would be less painful.

No thanks.

Probably wasn't the crust.

It was probably the poor food safety practices due to the astonishing level of stonerism among the staff.

They are always do damn high.  It's amazing, really, that they ever manage to produce a pizza at all.

But I still love it so GD much.

Any recs on Austin pizza joints that build on a sourdough crust?

Not really Austin but Pieous Pizza does one i believe.

Hmmm . . . no reference on their website.  I'll call.  (This is health-related, sourdough fits better with certain diet restrictions.)

Rec from this thread

At Feral Pizza

We’re Inspired by pizza in parts of the Northeast, our pies are baked longer for a darker crust & crisp. We believe that the dough is what makes a pizzeria’s pizza unique and flavorful, so our batches of dough are made using our 10 year old sourdough starter; that is then cold fermented for 36-48 hours. We scratch-make as much as possible in small batches for quality and to minimize food waste….from the dough, pizza sauce, Italian sausage, hot honey, ranch, baked goods, etc

LMAO Feral was my original call.  Thanks.

We've ordered:

Classic Steve (pepperoni/mozzarella)

Stevie Ray Vaughan (Italian sausage, jalapeno, and cheddar/mozzarella) *my favorite so far

Steven Tyler (Italian sausage, red pepper, and ricotta/mozzarella)

Rockin' Rolls

They're decent sized and they are delicious.  The only bread my wife can consume is sourdough -- it has odd (and minimal) effects on blood sugar -- so we're happy to pay up a bit over random-ass pizza rolls.

That's the fussiest menu I've seen since I went to DeSano (once).  Jesus, people.  Sell me the fucking pizza I want.

We picked up Rosati’s (cedar park) last Sunday because we were craving a Chicago style, and miss Mangia. Got sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, and green olives. And gotdamn, it was good.

Damn I miss Mangia.  I drive past that place all the time and have never tried it.  Time to change that!

Do people really like the pizza at Pinthouse? I like their beer selection but the pizza is so lame.  Is there a special way to order it that I’m missing?

Mangia made a good cheeseburger back in the day and did those HPB&G style battered fries.

No, it has always sucked. Pizza rolls, imo.

Last time I got the rolls they were half the size they used to be. I just get a pretzel now.

Had a Scorpion Disco today that was really good. and of course a Jellyfish.

I've heard that the pizza at the actual Pinthouse Brewing (Ben White Blvd) is good, but I've never ventured down there.  The pizza at Pinthouse on Burnet is lame.

i think the meatball hoagie is the best thing pinthouse burnet has going but it's too expensive...like everything else on their menu. still like the pizza rolls but they are tiny now and twice the price they used to be.

Yeah they can GTFO with that $4.25/roll bullshit.

Will be in Austin next weekend. Recs for pizza downtown or near campus? We're staying pretty close to Backspace.

People seem to really like Oribello’s, but I haven’t tried.

Allday and Home Slice are both solid.

I know you said downtown but Homeslice was already mentioned so I'd add Dovetail is a cool spot. If you want to take a quick Uber up 1st or Soco.

I'm guessing you've had Homeslice before...

Or just try Backspace I'm sure it's fine 🤷

If Homeslice is on S. Congress, on the left as you're heading south, then yes. It was quite good.

PSA:  Feral Pizza is closed through June 18.  They're doing a pizza expo in Italy.
