July 15Jul 15 Just now, DFW Horn said: Who did the "winged helmet" first? Michigan or Princeton? I was curious too and it was a stock helmet but first popularized by Princeton, the coach then took it to Michigan, and a Michgan player took it to Delaware. Princeton vs. Delaware at least would be different colors. Michigan and Delaware are almost identical, looks like the blue is just a faintly different shade of blue. Princeton also stopped using it after 1938 and reinstated in it 1998. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winged_football_helmet

Then the answer is not Michigan vs Delaware as they played in the 1980's, and it looks like no two teams w/ the winged helmet have played one another at the D1 level. Or D2, for that matter. I'm not going to comb the D3 teams.
July 15Jul 15 Funny how influential Princton has been. Oklahoma State's colors are orange and black because some of its founders were from Princeton and its first mascot was the tiger.

July 15Jul 15 I like the updated, "Super Charger" helmets with the numbers All-Golds are unique Edited July 15Jul 15 by DFW Horn

So in other words, the exact opposite of the schools like Texas/PSU/ Bama with the great classics. I hate the gray unis for us. I also hate any red helmet. Some people like em, I do not. IMHO, we should wear Black-red-black for every home game with the all black for a night game or 2. Road games, I like the black helmet with any other combo. I know the players allegedly like the variants. I don't get a vote. The thing I hate is turning on the game and having to figure out which team is Tech. We have a great mascot and outstanding colors. A lot of of the new designs detract from both of those. The early 90s throwbacks with the non-beveled Double T will always be my personal favorite for home games, followed by the black/red/black. On the road, I like the black/white/black combo the most.

July 20Jul 20 Hell yeah. More teams with great throwbacks need to do this when they play. Falcons and Bucs doing it makes sense. Patriots also travel to Tampa.

I'll never understand why teams with iconic logos, brands, and colors ever deviate from it. Did it really help merchandise sales? Or was winning Super Bowls the reason?

Or was winning Super Bowls the reason? Good point from a branding standpoint. Seems like someone is always questioning how iconic a brand really is and whether it needs a refresh. Usually some new marketing dufus that wants to make a name for herself, e.g. Steve Patterson. One advantage teams have is that they can "test market" by running out unis for a game or two without changing their whole branding. Something a lot of companies can't do. I'd just like to see the data and analysis that goes into these decisions. My complaints are rooted in nostalgia for seeing the 70's and 80's era logos and branding. I prefer many of the old school, classic looks.

July 23Jul 23 We might not be great on the field (despite our record against Texas), but our uniform game is on point.
