Mother fuckers aren't dead yet!

Post Maryland game, and while most fans of the University of Texas's football program were still steeped in their lazy hatred for Tim Beck and their belief that his removal would be the panacea change needed to affect our return "back."

Smart observers realized that the offense was Herman's baby, and Herman needs a Sam like QB to be his on field surrogate...the guy in the booth with the play book is tertiary in order of importance to the effectiveness of Herman's offense, if it's even that. It was clear after Maryland that Herman and Sam hadn't gotten rolling yet, but with the improvement on the line, this roll was only a matter of time.

Tom Herman is one of the best offensive coaches in college football..some say the best..and the arguments I have heard for that position seem rather compelling.

No, what worried me after watching the Maryland game was the gashing of the defense.  There was no help on the way for any of that.  That was going to be what it was going to be until other players, hopefully much more capable players, would populate the roster.  I didn't see the difficulties the defense has had getting ball carriers on the ground and/or getting off the field on third down ever going away...and, truly, they still haven't "gone away."

But tonight was better.  That plan to utilize Gary Johnson as a spy on Purdy  - to negate that pump fake bullshit he has used to win 5 straight games..to completely stop him from escaping and moving the chains on broken plays with his legs, while affording Gary and others open season on some jarring hits on the QB, shots  that ended up knocking Purdy out of the game,..was all coaching...and more importantly...all Todd Orlando in his capacity as our DC and as our Linebacker's coach.

All is not forgotten - even if some of it is forgiven - but you are paid to fix shit here, sometimes on the fly or in game...to adjust and to instill a hard hitting defense that intimidates the finesse offenses of the Big 12.  That's what you did tonight and I am proud of you.

Iowa State might have had the best statistical defense in the Big 12 this year, but ask Brock Purdy which defense hits the hardest and is the most intimidating.

That’s a long post

All to say nothing of much sense or substance really.

We matched up much better with ISU than we did the last few weeks. Our guys played really well with a good game plan. Nice to see the seniors step up tonight.

Where the fuck was this run defense all year?

Great game tonight TO

Keep getting healthy. Charles O is a beast. Moving himself up the draft board nicely. Smart decision💲💲 to return.

Kinda like surly.

Great defense tonight. Got qb pressure, got sacks, got turn overs, stopped the run. Purdy had an ugly stat line. Stopped their big WR.  Great to have the defense back again for tonight

Caught a great break having Montgomery out for ISU during 1st Half....

Great performance by TEXAS Defense....🤘

6 sacks tonight. Defense was all over ISU. It was refreshing to see.

Helps when you aren't playing offenses that are best in the nation week after week.

Also, injuries healing up and freshman growing the fuck up and playing consistently great.

It's all about matchups. We play well against offenses like ISU especially when they have QBs that can't run a lick.

Why are you apologizing?  The past criticism isn't valid all of a sudden?

? for the football brainiacs.

Did TO use a 4 man front due to opponent or due to change in philosophy

There was no fear of ISU slinging it around the yard. Stop their running game and win.

As far as running threats go, Purdy is no Kyler Murray, but he isn't JT Daniels, either.

I was most impressed with our defense's discipline on the pump fakes.

Use of the term mea culpa is very haughty.

Even good coaches can be blinded by love of formation. Credit to Orlando for swallowing that pill and moving more to a 4 man front and allowing our linebackers to simplify their responsibilities.

Hard to exploit a huge playmaking WR deep when your freshman QB doesn't have the time, or patience, to wait for him to get open.

Now, about the tackling technique...clean that up and 210 yards is only 150 or so..

As usual, there's no rational middle ground here. Last year we deemed Beck an abject failure as an OC and excoriated him. Then he got a serviceable OL (kind of)--and it became widely accepted that it was all TH's offense anyway--and now for the most part the furor surrounding him has died down.

After Orlando's D carried us last season, we blow or almost blow five 4th-quarter leads and now he can't coach a lick of defense. Then we stonewall ISU and all of a sudden it's socially acceptable to say good things about him again. The combination of fair-weather fans and mob mentality is lethal. It's also the essence of this board.

ISU isn't an explosive offense, made Orlando look good. Herman's defense of Orlando in the ISU post game presser was really pitiful excuse making, basically saying they played some elite offenses lately so wth can we do about that?

Let's be honest:  This team is better equipped to run a 4-2-5 personnel wise.  The DL are just more traditional that way.   The 3-3-5 was working early in the year, but as team's identified Locke and Wheeler as the weak points, a change was needed.  Credit Orlando and Herman for doing it, but it was clear by half in the WVU game that we needed more bodies up front.

Yeah, he should have raked Orlando over the coals at a PC after an important win. Nailed it.

that would be best, but he still should not have made excuses for the bad 3 games. I guess the point went over your head.

I agree the crap we had been seeing out of the defense spoke for itself. The performance against ISU did not re-write prior performances. Only thing that should be said is, why did did it take so long after the 4th quarter debacle against OU to make these adjustments. Any way glad to see that adjustments were made and hope to see another dominate performance against KU and the continuation of proper adjustments against WVU or OU. I want to be in New Orleans for New Year's.

Couple thoughts:

1) We didn't use a 4-man front hardly ever, definitely less than we did the last 3 games.

The differences were:

2) We ran a base of 3-3 nickel instead of 3-2 dime.  Probably due to both injuries and opponent.

3) We brought zone pressures a lot.

Let's just wait to see if we can hold Kansas (yes fricken Kansas) below their seasonal average and hopefully WVU the following week before we issue a mea culpa to Orlando

Actually Tim Beck is more worthy at this point.   Damn I can't believe I just typed that.

Orlando is hell on offenses that try to line up and run the ball at his defense.  Other examples would be KSU, USC and TCU.  The breakdowns have come against teams that spread it out and use deception and timing to hit receivers on the move in the LB's coverage zones.  Give Wheeler and Johnson primary run responsibility and they look much better than against teams that constantly force them into coverage against backs and 4th or 5th receivers in the slot.

Lotta muledick in this thread. And what knocked Purdy out of the game wasn't so much the regular hits on him it was his fool leaping into the air and smashing his kneecap on a defender's shoulder pad. Whatever, I'll take the win.

Nice to see the D not fold in the 4th q. Special teams wtf though.

Let's not start sucking Tim Beck's dick just yet. He's a great QB coach, but he's not the offensive coordinator if Tom Herman is the one calling plays. It's not like Tim Beck figured it out and is a good OC now.

lol the irony

it's amazing what getting consistent pressure on the quarterback can do for your defense

Oh hell no!  He still has two, maybe three games to fuck things up and become the Tim Beck we have come to loathe and disrespect.

GET SOME

FUCKING

TURNOVERS

IF MURRAY DIES, HE DIES

GET FUCKING TURNOVERS

Look how low he carries the ball. Don't go for the big hit, break down and grab, let the others come in for the big hits and strips.

All I know is TO had better be scheming/game planning his ass off. The defense needs to shut ewok and the dirt burglars COMPLETELY down on Saturday.
