January 7, 20241 yr That's a good story. I'm quite certain, based on his lineage, his son is good people as well. Yeah, I guess it was a Texas Independence Day "festival." We didn't go, but I know many who did. It was apparently some 2-night wild bender with him and some buddies playing live music. I guess that woulda been 2001? Whenever I come across "Slingblade" on streaming/cable, I get to that scene where Doyle and his buddies are playing with a legit amp setup on the back porch and everybody is completely shitfaced. Reminds me of how I envisioned that Wheeler party going. Man, they really don't make guys like Benson anymore though. I have lived many lives and served many masters, but that was a guy with tales as old as time. He saw and did some shit, that much I know. I'd say he was forged of a hotter fire, but fucking Wheeler stole that line

I'd say he was forged of a hotter fire, but fucking Wheeler stole that line Yeah I always held Benson in the absolute highest regard. He was basically my grandparents age and no offense to my grandparents I loved them dearly but I always said I wanted to go out swinging like Benson did sharing stories with the younger generations and partying my ass off until they put me in the ground. So much better than sitting around at home getting old and doing very little outside of their local community. And yes Benson's son and granddaughter are both really good peeps his legacy lives on.
January 7, 20241 yr Good point, he's one of a handful of people including my own paternal grandfather and my maternal grand-uncle who just keep living life well into their 80's. My grand-uncle still takes cruises and flies and drives 'n shit. He's a widower now but is dating a woman 25 years younger than him (if you can call a 70yo a sugarbaby). But like Benson, they stay alive because they keep moving. That's the trick, playing it safe just makes you wither away at home. Ah, who the hell knows? I do remember thinking at the 2005 MNC game/06 Rose Bowl that I wish Benson coulda been with us. He'd probably have died right after the VY touchdown but either way, he went out smiling. Kinda like with Mack Brown, I just try and remember the good times. Plenty of time for hang-wringing and what-if'fing on the other side I suppose...
January 7, 20241 yr When Vince destroyed ole Frostee on 4th and 5 I actually looked up to the sky, pointed, and mumbled to myself "that's for you Wild Bill" I have little doubt he was enjoying the game from Valhalla... Now we just need to get our shit together and do it again.

I think Bob just disappeared immediately after that fiasco so I would say he likely screwed some people over. I think a few people actually forgave him for some reason
January 7, 20241 yr He really did go fully off the grid for a long while. I tried to call him for some reason a year or two later but his number had changed. I think shortly thereafter some guys from the original crew bought the website rights and tried to revamp it. He showed up mysteriously to some post-game party around 08/09 and a small group hung out for awhile. Nobody brought up the bus debacle as I recall. And then I ran into him again around 2011/12/13 when we had some late season non-conf. game versus FAU/UCF or one of those garbage teams. Still Wheeler in the Lee Jeans and white shirt and hat, like McMurray from Letterkenny. Just shot the shit for a minute over a couple beers. I think he had gotten engaged or married. He was trying to keep a low profile which worked out well, because nobody around recognized him unlike the old days when he was a minor celebrity. Also helped he got much, much quieter with age. so yeah, been a full decade since I last talked to him. If you're out there Bob, let us know you're still alive at least. You renegade bastard.

I was there. I’m aware of at least 40% of that story.

August 6, 20241 yr Well, I say that, and it’s mostly about what they’re returning rather than who they are playing. The schedule sets up pretty well for them if they’re even average.

There is a wider variation in SOS than what we had previously, which will affect W-L records significantly.
August 6, 20241 yr Let's actually preview UNC for the season since I have nothing better to do while I wait on some work stuff. Spoilered for tl;dr slugs. Spoiler UNC returns 5 starters on offense including AA candidate (2nd team AA last year) Omarion Hampton at TB. I think that dude is sensational with his size and speed. They also bring in Max Johnson as the replacement for Drake Maye. The talking heads and writers, and frankly us as fans, all assume that this will be a significant downgrade at the QB position. I'm skeptical of that premise. Maye did not play last year like a top 5 draft pick. I honestly wondered if he had money on the Virginia ML last year watching that game. He succeeded in aiding and abetting at least two other losses last season - NC State and Clemson. Max Johnson is a competent QB who can manage games without ever trying to play hero ball. With Hampton in the backfield, Johnson will be fine at QB if ... UNC can competently replace 4 starters on the OL. Given Mack's history with mediocre OL fronts, that's a big if. The OC for North Carolina is Chip Lindsey. He's been a fine OC when he has an offensive mind overseeing things - Gus Malzahn, Todd Monken. He's been middling otherwise. Defensively, UNC brings back 7 starters, none of whom will scare offenses. They lost their AA LB, Cedric Gray, to the NFL and that leaves a big hole. The big thing for the UNC defense is Geoff Collins. While he was a train wreck as HC at Ga Tech, he's had success at plenty of places as a DC. He's inheriting a positively mediocre defense in terms of performance, but Mack's recruited solid talent. Over the final 6 P4 games last season, UNC allowed 37 ppg. That was not against a group of juggernauts offensively (UVa, Ga Tech, Duke, Clemson, NC State, and WVU). Collins' ability to mold the defense into an upper echelon ACC group coupled with UNC fielding even a middling OL will have a chance to put UNC into surprise potential CFP team territory. Is that because they'll be worth a fuck? No, actually. It's largely because their schedule is utter cat shit. UNC goes: -@ Minnesota - UNC beat Minnesota 31-13 in Chapel Hill last year. Maybe Minnesota's new QB, a 6th year transfer from New Hampshire, will be a revelation. I don't think Fleck is a bad coach. This game might be really important. If UNC wins here, look out. -Charlotte - While we should all fear the wrath of Biff Poggi, I don't see a loss here for UNC. -NC Central - I didn't even know this school existed. -James Madison - Coaching change and graduation ravaged the JMU roster. They have a new regime returning just 7 starters across both sides of the ball. I don't see a loss here for UNC. -@ Duke - Manny Diaz and Maalik Murphy lead a team returning just 10 starters. Good luck with that. I'm selling this team all year. -Pitt - Narduzzi is a better coach than 3-9 in 2023. They return 9 offensive starters and they have new OC in Kade Bell who might be one of the next big things. I think Pitt is a bowl team this year but this is in Chapel Hill. -Ga Tech - these are similarly talented teams and both will have winning records. I like UNC at home. -bye -@ Virginia - UVa returns all 5 starters on their OL and they return 16 starters overall. They're on the road against Clemson the week before, so this is a tough recovery game for UVa with UNC coming off of a bye. -@ FSU - FSU is facing a tough schedule heading into this game, with 2 straight road games, including Miami the week before. FSU returns 10 total starters. They're trotting DJ Uiagulailaileelialiaa out there and the media and their fanbase are talking about him like he's anything other than a fucking mediocrity. FSU is a lazy vote for writers and coaches in the polls. #10 in the Coaches' Poll? Get the fuck out. FSU, at best given schedule and experience, is a fringe top 25 team in CFB this year. Huge game for UNC that they can very easily win. -bye -Wake Forest - This seems like the classic game that Mack Brown teams fuck up. UNC should roll these guys at home, but I'm guessing it will be uncomfortably close. -@ Boston College - BOB is a good program builder if PSU was any indication. It's year 1 though. If Castellanos is still healthy at this point in the season, maybe BC has a prayer. I doubt it. -NC State - Doeren has owned Mack Brown the last 3 years and NC State will be good again. This will be the biggest game of the season for both teams, and legitimate CFP contention will be on the line with a possible ACC title game invite being the potential outcome for the winner. So, with that schedule and background on the team, assuming a competent D, I could see 10-2/11-1. If the defense and OL don't have their shit together, that schedule still probably gives them a bowl invite. I'll be cheering against UNC and Mack Brown, but it looks less fun for folks like me after reflecting on the big picture for the program in 2024.

September 4, 20241 yr Y'all need to cut Mack some slack. He spent his entire life playing second fiddle to his older brother. Real-life aggy-type little brother stuff. Watson was pitcher and shortstop, Mack played first. Watson was quarterback, Mack played fullback. Watson was point guard, Mack played small forward. Hell, he got his nickname, Mack, because neither Mom nor Dad could remember his actual name. Mack got to coach Texas, won the National Championship. But Watson coached Vanderbilt, richer and smarter. All things considered, I'd love to see him coach UNC into the CFP... and hope we get a shot at them. There's a lotta lotta payback due for 2010-11-12-13. We aren't gonna get a lot of shots at it.
