Admittedly, I haven’t actively followed recruiting since “Malikmas”

He had a good year or two at Louisville that put him in that position much like Tom had a Cougar High who was also at the time an ESPN hype pick for the next big job. I can now say thankfully we didn’t bite a third time when Sark was hired. But other than Urban Meyer and maybe Saban’s name coming up I can’t think of a coach from the mid majors or lower profile Power 5 that ESPN pushed as the next big hire. Credit to CDC for being deliberate when he hired Sark. I had my doubts, but I pretty much glad those doubts were wrong. Edited November 29, 20241 yr by Nueces River Rat
November 29, 20241 yr 2) Fred Akers, 1938–2020: A Remembrance – Texas Monthly Quote When Royal retired after the 1976 season, Texas fans wanted Mike Campbell, Royal’s longtime defensive coordinator, as the next coach. Not Akers. But some at Texas—notably Allan Shivers, chairman of the UT System Board of Regents, and former chairman Frank Erwin—favored a clean break from the past. Akers represented that, sort of. He was 38 and had just led the University of Wyoming to an 8–4 season, Western Athletic Conference Championship, and Fiesta Bowl appearance. Wyoming was not a destination job for a head coach with big dreams, but Akers made it just that. “You have to figure out what you’re going to sell to kids,” Akers said. “What we figured out is that if you’re an inner-city kid, say, from Chicago, and you come to Laramie for the first time, you’re seeing mountains and natural beauty you’ve never seen before. You wouldn’t believe how many kids would be sold on us when they saw the place.”

I'm really interested to learn more about: 1. Darrell Royal was only 52 years old when he stepped away. Did he leave on his own or was it a “please resign or we’ll fire you” 2. Why was Fred Akers chosen to replace him? 3. How the hell was Steve Patterson ever selected as AD? 4. Was hiring Charlie Strong a rogue move by the athletics department? (The BMDs didn’t support?) I know Red McCombs hated it. CTJ did a great job answering, but I can offer a little more… 1. Royal had two adult children die in the ‘70s. Plus, Switzer was not only cheating, not only getting away with it, but also openly taunting him, because Switzer is a true asshole. 3. I heard that Oliver Luck was the leading candidate, but in his interview, he made it clear that Mack needed to retire/be retired, and that needed to happen before he started the job. Because Luck is smart. Patterson gave assurances that he would follow Powers’ lead on the matter. Powers needed that, because he was in a precarious political situation. Rick Perry was trying to put the same “reforms” on UT that were put on TAMU, and he was stacking the BoR with amenable people (a couple not even Exes, as it was getting more difficult to find UT grads to appoint that would do the governor’s bidding). Mack was failing, and was using all his political connections and relationships among UT supporters in an attempt to hang on. Powers was trying to navigate Scylla (Perry) and Charybdis (Mack) and he believed he needed an AD that would do what he (Powers) told him. Powers was the key decision maker on the AD hire. By no means do I think Powers was perfect or blameless in this, but I tend to be sympathetic to his position. I think his goals were more aligned with the university’s best interests than many of the other big players. Edited December 6, 20241 yr by statsman

December 10, 20241 yr The question was asked "why did Fred Akers brought in to replace Darrell Royal?" The main reason was because of his earlier ties to Texas football. He was considered to be one of Royal's better recruiters. Matter of fact. Coach Akers recruited a lot of the 1967 UT class that is still considered to be one of the best in the school's history. (The myth that Royal was just recruiting players to keep them from competing against him started with this class).Coach Akers was considered to be an up and coming coach that would fit the new image of UT. He also brought in a new updated concept of defense to the equation. He also hailed from a school that absolutely hates Texas(Arkansas). While he was friends and former teammate of Barry Switzer, Coach Akers understood the meaning of the OU game. He would never invite Barry Switzer to speak with any Teas team like Mack Brown did. one time. When Mack did that, it was like him spitting on Coach Royal's face. December 10, 20241 yr So a guy and a staff that has never recruited HS players are going to go to UNC and somehow just rev that program up? I just can’t picture BB dealing with an entitled 18 year old. This IMO is a terrible hire (if it comes to fruition).

They were not wrong in getting rid of Mack though.
December 11, 20241 yr He's retired and fucking someone fifty years younger than him. At his stage in life why not just start a clinic to teach coaches how to coach or develop players? Seems like a more fruitful use of his time instead of being a fucking head coach. If this is ONLY about getting his son a job...yikes.
December 11, 20241 yr I absolutely love this. It’s going to be entertaining no matter the outcome. But I do think he’ll be reasonably successful. Mack has set the bar rather low at UNC. Holding James Madison to less than 70 would be an improvement.

December 11, 20241 yr I'm skeptical but it would be fucking amazing if UNC actually turns the "make Belichik say no" coaching search meme into a reality. While we're at it, West Virginia should go get Gruden.

A poster, and I don’t remember the handle, wrote in response the very colorful position of: “If I were driving around a dangerous mountain curve and saw Barry Switzer and Brian Bosworth walking to get a gas can filled, I’d hit the gas and take them both out as we all tumbled into the ravine. I’d die laughing and I hope I could see their faces as we plummeted. “ I’ve stolen that premise many times since.

I just can’t picture BB dealing with an entitled 18 year old. Belichick absolutely sucked at drafting with high draft picks. BB succeeded as long as he did because he got the Tom Brady discount on Free Agents. (Similar to the Saban discount at Alabama.) BB won’t be able to recruit high school 5 stars for shit, but he should crush it at 20 to 22 year-old transfers looking to go to the Belichick Finishing School for NFL hopefuls. He is going to run a program for 1 & 2 year upperclassmen. That’s it. He has already stated it through a variety of news sources. The longer his hiring drags out, the more interviews he gets to campaign for his new plan for a NFL Feeder college program. When idiots on TV talk about Charlie Weiss & others with this plan failing in the past, they are leaving out that those attempts were made BEFORE 100% Annual Free Agency. There are a decent amount of rich UNC alums to provide NIL funding, Chapel Hill is a nice place, the girls are beautiful, and you can basically get a Masters Degree in NFL Prep from “The Greatest NFL Coach of All Time.” This will be like Deion’s Colorado, but no high school recruiting (by Belichick himself) and all of the flashy jewelry is in the form of 6 Super Bowl rings. Don’t know if it will work, but I would expect a playoff appearance by UNC in the next 2-3 years or he steps down. Edited December 11, 20241 yr by Napoleon

Royal wanted his longtime assistant coach Campbell to succeed him and when Akers was chosen it created hard feelings. Akers was able to initially over come it by having an undefeated regular season lead by Earl Campbell but badly lost to Notre Dame in Cotton Bowl and finishing #2 in 1977. Akers later lost to Georgia in Cotton Bowl which cost him a NC, and embarrassed by Iowa and lost to Air Force in bowl game his final season. I’m sure there were other significant events but those are what mostly standout in my memory for his demise.
