Mack Brown Tarheel Football: The Orange Slice Boogaloo

Featured Replies

What the fuck are all of you going on about with Mack being in any official capacity involved with UT athletics?

Mack is a media monster. This is a media play, which is why the interview was great and why him coming back is good.

I don't give a shit about all the Mack hate, but some of you are acting like there's not money to be made and a complete void to be filled with Texas media that LHN left and Bobby and his team have somewhat filled. Mack isn't an idiot, he could ask anyone he wanted on a show and bullshit for an hour or 2 a day and focus on CFB centered around Texas and 200k+ daily listeners would tune in automatically.

He's not invited to come do AMA on surly or to be a regular podcast guest or anything else, but to say that it's net negative to have a guy who's an eyeball and earhole magnet come back and home base in Austin is a completely naive and moronic take.

Is Mack going to be a Surly moderator?

Why not??

Mack should replace Corso on the GameDay set. That'd be a good role for him. I can't wait to see him don the HookEm head in Austin.

Bobby is welcome to work to earn his money however he please. I've no issue with that aspect.

However, if you don't see the downside of having Mack anywhere around the program you aren't aware or are overlooking his past behaviors, ego maniacal behaviors while at Texas and UNC, and don't know what ultimately drives the man. It is NOT money. He craves worship, influence and control. Like any ego maniac, give an inch he's going to look for a mile. He's passive aggressive as hell.

As for getting a ton of listeners by having Mack on his show, maybe, maybe not. I for one would proactively avoid any broadcast that includes Mack just like I did when he was on air. It's not just his prior behavior, but his voice tied to that behavior and his former press conferences literally trigger me. Truly, his voice pisses me off. I'm pretty fucking sure I'm not alone.

I do know other folks who are not fans of his that are influential and you met some of them at my former tailgate. I don't know where they stand on MBs return as I haven't spoken with them and would not broadcast it publicly if I did, because MB would then target those folks. He has before and will again. Seriously, that's how the man works.

Anyone else is welcome to do as they please, but he hurt Texas athletics and Texas football. I'm never supporting anyone in any way that has proactively caused damage to the team and University I love.

It’s not a net negative for someone trying to generate revenue with engagement, but most of us aren’t viewing it from that perspective.

I won't comment on the interview because I didn’t and won't listen. However, he was a major/direct factor in preventing Saban from possibly coming to Texas and along with Dodds drove the program to the precipice of doom prior to finally getting run out of town.

That's enough for me to want to keep him as far from anything Texas as possible.

Charlie once said Mack was his best friend in Austin

What other perspective is there? CDC isn't hiring mack fucking brown.

The other perspective is that giving a guy a megaphone who we know to be completely focused on his own legacy to the detriment of the UT football program (see, his behavior at the time of his exit), is not good. The second things aren’t perfect in Sark’s program, you can count on Mack Brown to do everything in his power to twist the knife.

I’m fine with the one off interview. Bobby is good people and needs to make money. And I would be fine honoring Mack at half time next year (maybe with the entire 05 team) on the 20th anniversary. But anything that gives him a permanent microphone is a bad idea (again, from the program’s perspective, not a clicks perspective).

If Mack puts on a good public face and we all either are good friends genuinely or at least pretend in front of the kids we are good friends, it's a positive. Legacy and unity build and sustain programs.

"No matter what you do for us beforehand, we will shun you forever if you fuck up." vs. "If you win big, you're allowed some fuck-ups and shitty behavior and we'll still take put on a good show of welcoming you after a grace period of good behavior."

That's not just good for our public image (which matters), it's good for recruiting the best of the best to play and work here.

We can be petty bitches here, fine, but wanting the University to manifest that petty bitchiness is ridiculous.

There is nothing anyone can do to stop Mack Brown from (a) having a voice many will listen to and (b) staying closer to the program than basically anyone else not current working/playing for the program can. Those are set in stone. We can pout and bitch and relitigate 2010-2012 (which we all agree on) but neither (a) nor (b) are changing.

He's coming. CDC can't stop it. Sark can't stop it. No poster of any connection or influence can even be a mild speedbump to it.

If Uncle Mack is coming to Thanksgiving, you might as well set it up to be as successful as possible knowing how Uncle Mack acts and planning around it.

Will he publicly throw shade sometimes? Absolutely. Will the management of his perceived legacy and ego be primary in his mind? Absolutely. Does he have anything useful to add to the football operations side of things? Hell no. Should Sark spend more than 30 minutes a week in conversation with him? Hell no.

Blow a bunch of praise and cigar smoke up his ass, hand him a microphone, then put some shit that flatters him (his #1 concern) and the Texas program on the teleprompter and let him rip.

Put me in the camp of - Hey Fuckyou Payme... thx for staying out of Vince's way and letting him win us all a national championship.. Other than that.. keep that cancer off the 40 acres.

I am sure there are a few million viewers who tune in every time Vladimir Putin appears on TV and it's great content for some folks, but I wouldn't want him around our country.

2 conference championships in 16 years isn't winning big

Goodfellas GIF

I saw a small portion of one of his final pressers at UNC and he is a little bitch when he knows he is on the way out. I have also heard good things about the man during former player interviews. Glad we had him and wish we would have won more hardware during his time but I did thoroughly enjoy that NC he brought us.

Remember half the folks wanted Gary Barnett just imagine where we would have been with him at the helm.

I think you forgot something.

The only thing Mack should be doing is buying a big house that backs up to whichever golf course all his big money friends play, and sit outside all day on his back porch while they drive by and kiss the ring for a minute before playing on.  And grabbing a meal and holding court at the clubhouse whenever he felt like having an audience to regale.

best for Texas, best for him. But that’s not how it’s going to be, is it?

Username and all.

There's a difference between holding a grudge and remembering, and acting on, lessons learned.

I sometimes feel bad for Mack and his lifetime battle against being less loved than his brother, even ignored, by his Mom and Dad. It's sad, really...

But it doesn't excuse his overall behavior.

And it sure as hell doesn't mean I - or any of us - should put aside what we've learned about him, and it doesn't mean we should forgive and/or forget. I don't, and I won't.

Fuck Mack Brown.

Doubt he needs money though wealthy successful people often do not have an off switch.

there is enough infrastructure in place to where Mack could have an ambassador type role and not interfere with Sark.  The caveat being I think CDC and Deloss are close.  Emissary Mack may be good for the program though I still think he’s a thin skinned jerk

David McWilliams is an example of what can be done but Mack Brown is the complete opposite of David McWilliams.  David McWilliams did not want or need to be celebrated.

Nothing good will come of this.

And I don’t get why the guy is a media monster. I’ve heard pretty much everything that’s come out of that guys mouth in the media since he was announced as coach in 1997. And it’s been pretty much non stop hollow coachspeak word salad.

Wait, nevermind, I guess I do understand why this guy is a media draw.

And I stand by my assertion that nothing good will come of this. Other than for Mack that is.

This thread is hilarious.

It's almost better than a game thread.

Almost.

Is Mack going to tell us how to win football games?  Conference championships? National championships?  Run a successful college football program in the current era?

or bitch about shit?

This is funny.  No potential coach or prospective recruit gives a shit about Mack Brown unless he says something stupid the media can parrot.  he is yesterdays news.  our public image is just fine without Mack Brown and that is what bothers him so much and why he wants to stick his nose back in.  UNC is a basketball school and they still smashed him in the face by hiring a guy the same age who may be the GOAT to take over.

Maybe Sark can be the next DKR.  Mack is not.  You keep assuming Mack is going to play nice.  At what point in any of his history has this been the case?

All this "he threatened to sue us so long we couldn't get Saban and he told some recruits to go somewhere else" or whatever shit is super-inside baseball to whatever extent it's even connected to reality. When he resigned, he didn't put out public statements about Texas being dogshit and evil, he said he resigned because his work wasn't up to the standard of Texas expectations. He was a little whiny about it, but overall he has been a good soldier in terms of being outwardly positive. Don't confuse our hyper-obsessive viewpoint onto it with how the broader CFB/sports world sees it.

Here's a very simple question: Is it good for Texas to have an NC-winning former coach on ESPN/YouTube/wherever talking about how awesome Texas is?

The answer is yes.

Since Mack is coming, whether we like it or not, we should actively engineer the best possible outcome to the extent that we can.

What does he provide that we don’t have?  Guy couldn’t even win the acc and he coached there for ten years.

what is the farthest point from the University but still in Austin?  We should put him there and force him to come to the office in traffic every day.  none of this "work from home" bullshit.

Sark only managed to win it once, advantage FUPM.

30+ years of being a head coach. 2 conference titles. Amazing.
