The problem is that he put on a fucking masterclass on how to obliterate your legacy in his last four years here. And he took it to an almost comical level in the final weeks/days. There is a reason he's been gone this long and there is still nothing here with his name on it (that I know of), much less a statue. Mack mentioned working for CDC previously which threw me for a moment. IIRC Mack did have some sort of cushy brand ambassador/consultant type gig here before he left for UNC. I randomly remember hearing about him and Sally taking a "business trip" to Qatar or some such place. So If Mack returns to do something similar it wouldn't be unprecedented. Maybe he wants to take some more trips on the University's dime.
December 29, 2024Dec 29 Popular Post The only benefit immamac can come up with is that media types will make money. Most fans don't give a flying fuck if media types make money and that doesn't benefit the program much if at all. bad_teammate's theory is that Mack Brown will say nothing but great things about Texas. Laughable. And to get there, David Dennison is extolling the tremendous success of a guy who had one magical season in 16 years. 2 conference championships in 16 years and the three worst losses to Oklahoma in Texas history. 2005 can never be taken away and I'm thankful for it, but Mack Brown's overall tenure was pretty good but not nearly great and is the entire basis for the program's reputation for wasting tremendous advantages. 16 years with only 2 conference championships had only been done twice in Texas history before Mack Brown. From 1921-1941 Texas only won 2 conference titles, then again from 1978-1993. Mack Brown actually started the latest downturn of local Texas strength relative to our state and conference mates. And let's not pretend that winning the Big 12 with 12 teams was as tough as winning a 16-team SEC will be moving forward. He pretty much just had to beat Oklahoma and we know how that went.

Good luck, fellow posters, keeping the cameras and microphones away from Mack and convincing players, coaches, admin, and donors to ignore his calls. Go fly a banner, I guess. December 29, 2024Dec 29 Damn 5 pages of handwringing because Mack is moving back to Austin. Do you guys imagine him walking into CDC's office and saying "Pack your shit, I'm the AD now!"? He's 73 and hasn't been relevant since we shitcanned him over a decade ago. Nobody cares what he says or thinks. He's wants to sit up in a press box on gameday so he can be cheered when they show him on the jumbotron. That's all this is about.

December 29, 2024Dec 29 Those pointing out that the University won't be as petty as we are here are right; at least outwardly. No one at UT is going to issue a press release saying "fuck that guy, he's not welcome and UTPD will arrest him for trespassing the moment he steps on campus." The University's pettiness will show up in more subtle ways. Like he gets honored between quarters vs. a halftime presentation. He is feted in a group vs. alone. Or one of my favs: he gets the statue or his name on the practice facility you know he so desperately wants for his legacy...after he dies.

Even if you take away all the hysterics about Mack and his potential toxic impact on Texas going forward and just look at Burton's interview in a vacuum, it was mediocre to below average. The questions were fawning, softball and leading the witness ("Mack, would you agree that..."), the answers were shallow with little-to-no follow up ("Sark is doing great," "You need great NIL to compete today," "I keep in touch with former players on Facebook"), and there was zero balanced examination of the bad side of Mack's tenure as you would expect in an "good" interview. I was going to give Burton half-credit for his "which loss stung the most" question, but he loses it when he jumps over and answers it for Mack, and then Mack predictably uses it as an opportunity for excuse making and throwing players under the bus. I don't blame Burton for this. He's not a professional interviewer, that's a skill. And Mack probably wouldn't be there if he was going to face anything other than softball questions. Maybe, as you said, a softball interview with an over-the-hill coach from a decade ago will generate hundreds of thousands of viewers and that makes it worth it to OTF. But don't piss in our face and say it's raining by calling this a "good fucking interview" when it clearly is anything but.

Mack Brown didn't fucking cause the last decade in the wilderness claiming he's the direct cause of it is beyond bogus. He can call whichever AD in the country he wants, not for a job, but just to talk and there are very very few people that can do that. his exit was shitty it would have never gone down that way if he had held to his promise to boom that the rose bowl was his exit the surl is of course not the vast majority of fans but the surl is the core of the core - maybe create a poll for a surl referendum on the topic of mack? - and wait until after the season is over before posting it...... even having this discussion with a quarterfinal in 3 days is a distraction

And if they're dumb enough to let Mack's thin-skinned defensiveness and self-mythologizing then we're screwed anyway. Better to set it up to where he can get his massive, easily-wounded ego stroked in a way that's healthy for the program and not leave it to him having to make his own way to get attention and reassuring pats. The knee-jerk response to this is typically "Because Vince," and while Vince's heroics were a critical piece of it, there's more. warning: detailed longcat commences; grab yer adderall and try to stay awake The still oversimplified but much longer story is that he got lucky with some changes to his staff. (To be fair, he had some hires of his own that were good. Akina was a great hire; Tolleson was fantastic his entire tenure here. And... well. That's the lot.) Hiring Dick Tomey. I've been beating this drum ever since it happened, and honestly it basically happened on accident. Tomey changed the way Mack had done things for decades, including having starters go against starters in practice. And revamping his defensive staff in general was needed, because his initial hire was a gadget coach who made his name by stopping Spurrier's Florida teams. Mack had called Tomey up to see who he should hire to coach DE's, and Tomey told him "Hire me." He, SB-winning coach Greg Robinson, and (already on staff) Duane Akina then helped build some championship-winning defenses. Tomey was the only person who could tell Mack to do things differently. McWhorter coaching Nunez's recruits. When Mack started, he hired Tim Nunez as OL coach, who was a top-notch talent identifier/acquirer who couldn't develop that talent once they arrived; McWhorter could develop that talent once on the team, but was lazy and awful at identifying and acquiring said talent. The 2005 season featured a starting OL with Nunez's recruits and McWhorter's development. They were awesome and it was never as good before or since. These things were more or less Mack catching lightning in a bottle, things that broke him out of his normal tendencies and finally got him that gold ring. But he himself didn't recognize how critical they were, and after Tomey left, he eventually went back to the ways he had done things before, as if to prove that he could do it his own way. And that might have worked in 2008 and 2009 if one thing had been different: If the OL recruiting had been as good under McWhorter as it had been under Nunez (again, with McWhorter's development). Without a good enough OL, poor Colt McCoy was destroyed in the Big XII title game (where we barely eked out a win) and completely ruined in Pasadena (which by itself probably led to the loss). I mean... the fact that Mack thinks he should've given Garrett Gilbert more snaps, instead of, you know, maybe getting some badass bruisers on OL in the preceding years over Good Kids Who Graduate, just shows that he still has no idea how he did it in '05.

But the only thing Davis did was steal the very simple zone read scheme Missouri was running and hand it to Vince. All the jokes about the "Greg Davis 3rd and 5" are true. No one in coaching circles goes around trying to copy what Greg Davis was doing; Davis was the copycat, but with no knowledge of when a good idea is a good idea and when it isn't. Folks pointed out this flaw with his play calling, but it's also true to how you create an offense to begin with. Davis got big numbers because he had an overwhelming talent advantage. When he didn't have that, he couldn't move the ball or score. *I do not have a basement. It's a figure of speech, kay?

If you give him all of the above he will be thinking "yeah but why didn't they give me XYZ?" And worse, I'm sure he still has supporters, friends, patrons, boosters, BMDs in the system and he can pour poison in their ears in private all the easier the closer he gets to the program. All it takes is him attending one practice, then he has a conversation w/ a big donor about how "oh I saw something that I didn't like or wouldn't have done it that way" and pretty soon the BBs are falling out of the box and someone like Sark or CDC has to start working to put them back in. Maybe let's not spill them to begin with.
