I imagine any negotiated settlement will have to include the west lifting formal economic sanctions. That’s the price of getting through this.

What will remain is the realization among foreign private companies that Russia is an unstable economic partner as long as Putin (and his kleptocracy) is in power. It will be a long time before they return to full economic engagement.

My dad (a LTC) always said the NCOs made the Army function. Smart officers got out of their way.

Yep. My dad (Col. USMC) said his Gunnery Sergeants were his go-to’s. Especially when he was in Vietnam as a Platoon Commander fresh out of OCS.

Poland is giving off a real FAFO vibe these days.  Of all the NATO members the Danes and Polish are probably the most ready to mix it up.

Poland was invaded twice in WWII.  First during the Blitzkreig and second when the Soviets “liberated” the,.  They harbor a lot of ill will towards Russia.

On a related note;

While living in a wall tent somewhere in the Aleutian Islands on Christmas Eve, 1942, Dad had a slight problem. An Army Air Corps friend of his stopped by a few days earlier and had given him a fresh pint of whiskey, but Dad was a teetotaler.
So, he decided to pass it on and called for two of his sergeants (both Irishmen) to present themselves. After the initial salutations, Dad told them he had a problem... that he had come across some contraband and was in a quandry as to how to  dispose of it.
He then place the pint of the very scarce hootch on his field desk and asked them if they could think of a proper way to get rid of it for him.
Dad said he had never heard so many genuine “Oh, Yes Sirs!” in his whole 20 year active duty career. Lol

Dad had a knack for winning hearts & minds.

And to be clear, the “Blitzkrieg” involved Russia invading Poland from the East in conjunction with Germany in September 1939.  Russia also invaded Finland in November of 1939.

Effectively Russia was part of the Axis until Germany attacked them.

Once again, Ukrainian forces looking well-equipped/well-fed, meanwhile the photos of the new Russian POWs, they look like something out of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s (or Appalachia).

The big healthy Russians are probably well-off enough to avoid military service, while those same guys in Ukraine volunteered to fight. (Though some of the Russian pilots and paratroopers do look big and tall.)

Also, back in the day the Russians deliberately selected small crewmen for their horribly cramped tanks. Maybe that's still going on.

This. They let the nascent Luftwaffe use their airfields to train.

Let's not forget various bespoke wars between the Poles and Russians, most recently the Russo-Polish War of 1919-21, a Steampunk wonderland of fighting trains and cavalry wearing elf hats. I don't think they had battling airship pirates, but if any war ever did it'd be this one.

Orcs fired cluster munitions at Krasnohorivka

The enemy fired from Tornado-C multiple rocket launchers at the residential sector of the city of Krasnohorivka in the Donetsk region. Ammunition fell in the middle of the streets of the private sector.

Soldiers of the 25th separate airborne Sicheslav brigade of the DShV of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are confidently destroying racists together with equipment!

Occupied Sevastopol, some orcs are not even able to reach Ukraine

Still prisoners.

Trostyanets released, remnants of Russian equipment.

And what, military trucks burned down? Dzhankoy.

Vilkhivka was released. The occupiers are in captivity in the Armed Forces.

Between Russia seizing those companies' assets, and Europe deciding to wean itself off of Russian o&g, as well as the potential for Russia to fuck around in the future, yeah, I don't see most of those companies coming back for a very long time.  Not to mention the publicity - a lot of companies that tried to remain in Russia are getting absolutely dragged through the mud.  And then there is the issue of Russia trying to force companies to use the ruble as well.

Things like this are a clear sign that the EU is done with Russia:

There may be no better illustration of Russian doctrine than this.  They do not adapt on the fly.  They are a top down command, and when an objective is considered essential they will keep throwing themselves at it.  The crazy part is they continue to amass enormous losses here.

You say Russian, I say Soviet.....because they did the same shit in Afghanistan.

If the Afghans had anything approaching the NLAW or Javelin, me thinks the Soviets would not have lasted as long in Afghanistan.

Is anyone send them anti ship missiles ??

US said they are working on getting them to them, it's a matter of the platform.

If they can do that, Russia could easily lose Crimea.

Interesting article trying to confirm Russian KIA counts based on posthumous medals. It only follows the first week of action but aligns with some of the Ukrainian numbers.

https://informnapalm.org/en/medal-count-osint-analysis-of-real-russian-losses-for-the-first-week-of-hostilities-in-ukraine/

Rob Lee, the OSINT guys, etc., have been posting lots about Russian soldiers that are verified as being killed through Russian social media and local (think county or city) death announcements.  It's a lot more than 1,500.  Lee's daily postings are interesting as they seem to follow a trend of some point he's making - like one day he'll post/repost a bunch of officers that were killed (showing that their leadership is being gutted), the next day he'll post info about a bunch of soldiers from "elite" units (showing that Russia has her best units in the fight), and the next he'll post a bunch of dead conscripts from the rural/outlying areas of Russia, or he'll focus on dead soldiers from a particular unit showing that it's getting decimated, etc.

He (and the others) are including all of the Russian social media links and death announcements, and they are definitely being covering by the local Russian news/governments.  You will see comments on some of the social media sites in Russia saying "5 men killed from this elite unit?  what are they doing to the non-elite units?", and some of those comments are even left up (usually comments/replies are locked).

I have no idea if such social media/local announcements were made back in 2014, or during Chechnya, etc., but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't.

So either they are taking hostages/human shields for something in the future, or as some have pointed out, they maybe kidnapping medical personnel and making them work on wounded Russians.

Rumblings that Turkey is getting more and more pissed off over Russia fucking with shipping and putting a lot of mines in the Black Sea.  Somebody mentioned that this is one of those things that Turkey can use to close down down the Straits.

Speaking of pilots, this was one of the Russian pilots captured back on March 5 (they shot down several Russians that day).

On the one hand, a lot of conscripts look malnourished/weak.

On the other hand....Air Force or....Chair Force?

Turkey has a lot of coastlines/coastal cities, and they can't be too happy about mines floating loose.
