I know the Ukrainians are fast learners, but I wish we had trainers embedded with them in Ukraine.

The situation is a lot more tense though, versus the Russian trainers "embedded" in North Vietnam.

Not sure of the importance of this, other than a lot of people are talking about it, but they are using this as an example for future arrest/prosecution of Russians committing war crimes in Ukraine

I guess I didn't get the memo but I always had the Russians in the same category as the Germans.

Whenever I meet a German or Russian.

This was mentioned earlier, but it's a really good read, and indicative of the problems Russia has - plenty of Ukrainian IT specialists are fluent in Russian, but outside of those who have parents from Ukraine, you won't find may Russian IT specialists who learned Ukrainian.  A few other articles mentioned that they are finding vulnerable sites or connections, and hitting them with DDoS attacks - it's not just a blunt-force attack on a popular website (although that happens), but them very carefully finding weak links, and also setting up the DDoS attacks from within Russian networks with Russian computers that were compromised.

A lot of us thought the Russians would be a lot better at this than anybody else, but nope.

Every day, often at around 5 am local time, the Telegram channel housing Ukraine’s unprecedented “IT Army” of hackers buzzes with a new list of targets. The volunteer group has been knocking Russian websites offline using wave after wave of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which flood websites with traffic requests and make them inaccessible, since the war started. Russian online payment services, government departments, aviation companies, and food delivery firms have all been targeted by the IT Army as it aims to disrupt everyday life in Russia.

From the replies above.  I assume it is Bulgarian for “Prepare your anus!”

I could be wrong, but I thought Muslims generally prefer to bury the body within 24 hours - Russian officers keeping the bodies is not going to help things there.  Pretty fucking stupid strategy.

I thought you’d been paying attention to how the Russians do things.

True.  If this were football, the Russians think they are Alabama, but they are actually aggy.

Notice how spread out those vehicles are?  THAT is the proper way to convoy, you dumb Russian fucks.

No idea of the authenticity of the vid, but That was my thought as well. Even just a drive by clip of that convoy seems so much better organized than anything we’ve seen from Russia.

Hmmm.  The entire Ukraine-Romanian border is the Danube River (2nd longest in Europe), with no bridge crossing, the upper 1/4 averages a half mile wide, the lower 75% is bordered by a wide, swampy estuary.

I assume they are going to reinforce the Moldova-Romanian border.  Would we risk intervening with a pre-strike defense position in Moldova?  There's been rumors (no idea if there is any validity) that Romania would step in on the side of Moldova if they were invaded.

At this point, it would take Navalny somehow coming to power in Russia and truly reforming the place before Europe/US/Canada/Australia/Japan/etc. makes peace with Russia.

Hard to say which is scarier, sitting through an artillery barrage wondering if the next shell screaming in is going to land on you or having to spend every waking moment wondering if a drone is about to completely silently drop a 40mm right on your head, no warning no nothing.

Quote

Also, it's a threat around the clock, as these drones (or at least some variety) also operate at night with thermal cameras. So in addition to posing danger during daytime, drones also destroy vital recuperation time at night. Which leads to further fatigue, stress, anxiety and loss of focus on the battlefield.

It's one of the theories of why PTSD seems to be more prevalent in more modern warfare. The constant uncertainty of one's safety/life on a 24/7 cycle for such a extensive time has enormous psychological impact.

In ancient warfare the intensity may have been much higher on the day you lined up in formation across from the enemy but it was a defined time/length. There is a front line and clear indication of perceiving/quantifying danger you face. A majority of a campaign was not active combat but marching/camping/ect and during this time one typically didn't have to be in fight/flight mode.

Even in wars up through 19th century a soldier could typically know they were safe based on their location/situation. Modern/guerilla warfare has removed that sense of security and instead of being on high alert for day or two its all the time. That persistent fight or flight activation for weeks, months or even years does enormous psychological damage. Horrible stuff.

May have went through the sunroof or at least hit right on it.  Also, the truck was in reverse when it took off.  Wonder if the driver had it in reverse, grenade hits, and incapacitated or dead driver’s foot hits the gas and it goes backward until it runs into an obstacle.

And here's some more fear/desperation on Putin's part (probably scared that Japan will act on the islands the Soviets took).

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20220427_10/

A senior Russian official has said that an exercise between Japan Self-Defense Forces and the US military near the Russian border is a threat to Russian security.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov spoke in an interview with Russia's state-run RIA news agency on Tuesday.

The remark appears to refer to the joint drill held by Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force and the US Navy in the Sea of Japan earlier this month. A US strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln took part in the exercise.

Morgulov reportedly said Russia is warning via diplomatic channels that Japan will have to brace for Russian countermeasures should it conduct such drills more frequently.

Russia has designated Japan as an "unfriendly" state since it joined other Western countries in imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Russia has also unilaterally declared that it is suspending bilateral peace treaty talks with Japan.

This language isn’t unusual coming from Russia. Long before this war almost this exact phrasing came out, usually related to drills. Ditto talking about “striking anywhere,” the only new thing there is the reference to the war they started.

One of the results of all this is that we’re finally starting to acknowledge that Russia has been unacceptable for a long time and we just tried to pretend they weren’t. Kind of like the “ignore a tantrum” strategy.

Got woken up by my youngest needing to go to the bathroom and the night light was off, and I had been having a weird ass dream of me staying in my dad’s house, which was completely round for some reason, and discovering he had a large painting of Sally Field hanging up prominently.  Trying to figure that out.

anyways, holy fucking shit, Moldova is going to send aid to Ukraine, including sending military sappers to help remove mines and IEDs from liberated areas.   This seems really fucking huge.  And a good way for Moldovan sappers to gain experience dealing with shit left behind by Russians

Between the genocide and the art thefts, really gotta tell ya that they're following this Nazi road map pretty well.  They kinda fucked the Blitzkrieg though.  That's gotta hurt.
