So, you can get a LADA.....made by Renault.  A dream come true.

Although actually, having driven a LADA, it was actually fun.  About as close to driving a street legal go-kart as you can get.  And some old school nostalgia for those of us old enough: no power anything, am radio, no A/C.  Just a manual transmission, steering wheel, and an engine.  Peak Russian technology.

A lot/most of that money will go into the coffers of American defense companies.   Pretty sure Congress will be okay with that.

This is what  has had me worried for some time now.  Regarding this, if/when things go bad at home, how will this resolve fare?  We dive headfirst into a recession, support abroad is going to evaporate.

Isn’t the engine a Tractor motor, for all intents and purposes, all torque, no HP?

I want to say both estimates (HP & NMT) are only in double digits, so its a tiny little engine.  Don't they also make a diesel version?

The later versions got torque up in the triple digits. And they did make a diesel version. The VAZ 2105 (Lada  was the export marketing name) had a crazy long run from 1980 to about 2010 with different upgrades and engines along the way. And very few people except Soviet car geeks can even tell the difference between the 2105 and the earlier 2101, which in turn was based on the Fiat 124 with some engineering changes for Soviet roads and production capability.

The Fiat 124 was a good European car for its time.

Sure, but the Fiat was originally made in the late 60's to early 70's and the Lada still looks like it was made then too.

Oh, that's absolutely the case.  Driving a Lada a few years ago was like stepping into a time machine.  You've got a country making a copy of a bare-bones early 1960's utilitarian sedan.....today.

I think the old school Lada stopped production around 10 years ago.   But they'll be on the road for another 50.

The height of Russian engineering. Realize that they put the same price and eye for quality into their military equipment, and shit becomes clear:

They are about to be repurposed as armored troop transports  with some old phone books as the armor.  Of course the occupants will need to hold the phone books on the places they wish to be armored.

Sure, the point is that they’re simple cars and the principle “more fun to drive a slow car fast” is very much in play. They’re super bare bones, on the other hand they can and are kept running (poorly) by shade-tree mechanics for far longer than most Western cars run at all even with dealer maintenance.

Soviet car terminology gets confusing, too. The Soviets didn’t organize production around brands, they did so around factories, most ending in “AZ” (standing for “car factory”) and each factory was assigned a product line— often only one model.

GAZ- Full-size and luxury cars, later some trucks

VAZ- Small passenger cars

KAMAZ- Heavy trucks

ZIL- Limousines

UAZ- Utility vehicles, vans, off-road vehicles

And now, they mark certain vehicles with just a "Z" to indicate "about to be blown the fuck up."

This was actually my fear over the winter when we saw the Chinese real estate market begin to impload…

Instead, we are now looking at some of the same issues with our crashing GDP print and the faint sounds of the drums of war getting louder.

Ratski Patrolski?

Love that shit.  Recalling my days as a teen careening around the S. Texas night with a q-beam and shotgun, taking out jackrabbits, I used to fantasize about that means of anti-armor warfare.  Be fast as shit.  Pop up and take your shot, haul ass away.

The movies and pop culture media entries that this war will spawn are going to be very interesting and extremely graphic.  Not that the Russians will ever see how the world sees them.

‼️ Deputies of the Krasnoyarsk Territory of the Russian Federation have officially decided to export grain from the occupied Kherson region, forcibly confiscating it from farmers.

The chairman of the Russian Committee on Agrarian Policy said that "such experience" could be "successfully implemented" by deputies from other regions of Russia.
