I heard on NPR the other night that a lot of Ukrainian mothers are naming their newborns Javelin or Javelina. Thought that was kind of cool.

At this point Russia might want to reconsider trying to hold Snake Island.

Or. not  I like watching Russian shit get blown up.

This right here. Let as many of them to die there like fish in a barrel as long as Russia will send them. When they run out of soldiers, Ukraine walks in without a shot.

Google Maps is a tad circumspect about the status of Snake Island but does tell us to pay attention to real-world conditions, which may be rapidly changing. They do tell us though it's "temporarily closed."

I'm surprised, saddened, and disappointed by the lack of FAFO in the reviews.

Thanks. That is one of the dumbest articles I have ever read.

I sincerely doubt that. It is a fact that Russian lies have been promoted by certain individuals on that network. And certain individuals on that network have been promoted on Russian state television.

If we...errr...Ukraine could figure out a way to load up Snake Island with SAMS and Neptunes, and put a few of those new long range MLRS systems we're sending them out there, they could just about level Sevastopol with them. It's only about 120NM.

Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Labor Party) and President of the Storting Masud Gharahkhani (Labor Party) are in Kyiv. A photo taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shows Huitfeldt together with President Volodymyr Zelenskyj.

After meeting with the state leadership, we visited Irpin and Bucha near Kiev, where numerous civilian facilities were destroyed during the Russian aggression. We mourn all the innocent victims and the many Ukrainians who have had to leave their homes.

A separate detachment of special purpose "Omega" destroys the occupiers, Izyum direction.

Soldiers of the Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck at the base of the racists.

With a aimed blow, the Russians completely destroyed the St. George's Hermitage of the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra of the Moscow Patriarchate. Ruin and death are the only things that bring "Russian peace", even to those who were waiting for it. Beautiful church was, sorry ☠️

Kharkiv direction, a column of racists was destroyed. 1/2

I'm kind of disappointed in her - she's written some pretty solid stuff, and has a unique perspective as a naturalized Ukrainian who was born and raised in Russia.

She should know that the Nazi stuff was just an excuse.  They weren't crazy enough to invade because of Nazi crap, they were crazy enough to invade because Putin was arrogant, Putin believes Ukraine is not a real country and are just Russians by another name, and his oligarchs want Ukraine's oil & gas.  And that last point is important - Ukraine was getting close to a point where its o&g industry could bite into Russia's profits selling to Europe.

Kherson region will start issuing Russian passports

Important to note that the passport talked about in the article is an internal Russian passport, which is necessary for all types of legal and administrative formalities in Russia in addition to serving as your standard ID.  It is not valid for external travel. The article also mentions that they will begin paying pensions in rubles (God knows when or how).  These steps are pretty sinister, as it forces locals to come and interact with occupying and collaborationist authorities or risk being without a valid ID in the region. Issuing the passports will go hand in hand with filtration and suppression.

So this was today, Sunday, in Ukraine:

  • US re-opening embassy in Kyiv
  • Canada re-opening embassy in Kyiv (I believe)
  • US First Lady Jill Biden visited Ukrainian First Lady in Ukraine (albeit Western Ukraine)
  • Major Norwegian political players meeting Zelenskyy in Kyiv
  • President of German Bundestag  meeting Zelenskyy in Kyiv
  • Canadian Prime Minister in Kyiv meeting Zelenskyy in Kyiv
  • Croation Prime Minister in Ukraine (possibly meeting Z in Kyiv)
  • Most of U2 doing a concert of sorts in Kyiv

That is an awful lot of coincidences (well not the U2 stuff) for one day.  Trying to send message to Russia that we are in it for the long haul?

Add to this that Russia recently dumped a bunch of troops into Crimea proper as well.  Speculation is that Russia is trying to bolster its mainland holdings, but it's not 100% confident it can hold the mainland areas and so is moving long-range stuff to Crimea to A) Keep those systems safe from Ukrainian attacks on the ground as well as by drones and B) Protect Crimea.

There’s a small group at our shop, but even Blinken tweeted out that they are there to prepare to launch operations. It’s going to be a while before things are even partially functional.  When you bail out of a facility like that, there’s a lot of destruction left behind. The shell looks pristine and it is. It will be a while before anyone is working in there. Great symbolism for the day FLOTUS visited Uzhorod. Some real fancy work on that as well, as she was in eastern Slovakia and they got her across the border before any word got out she was going. Her official itinerary was Kosice and that’s a good drive from Uzhorod.

I think they're reading too much into the defensive perimeter they form when exiting the helicopter. That's just SOP so you don't bunch up, and also so you can get clear of the rotor wash. Practically every military exits a helicopter the exact same way every time. Fan out, and kneel. SOP.

Kharkiv region, fields after the Russian shelling

Trophy Russian howitzer 2C3 "Acacia", MT-LB and fuel truck. The location is unknown, probably Kharkiv region.

True, but there is a decent chance that they had no contact with the island as well, and the fact that there were so few of them does lend some credence to them being an evacuation helicopter.

Either way, Snake Island appears to be off the table for Russia, which is huge psychologically, but also helps protect Odessa and Moldova.  Would be really interesting if the Ukrainians could load it up with air defense and some of their anti-ship missiles.  Throw in some drone support.
