The Russians stealing art really rings another “these guys are just Nazis” bell. Hints of Goering “shopping” at the Louvre. Amber Room, y’all. Russia - you aren’t going to find it in Ukraine. You big dummies.

I gotta tell ya….scenes like that still get me.
I’m still, in my heart, an American who believes in the promises. Freedom, the right of self-determination. I know we are VERY FAR from perfect in that sense, both at home and abroad.
But I still love the promises. And to see them fulfilled, in a liberated people…that’s the good stuff.

This. I love America not so much for what it is, but for what it aspires to be.  Sell the promise? That happened long ago ..., the internet amplified it. The daily freedoms we enjoy that so many take for granted are recognized around the world, not so much for the scars and warts we have, but as a contrast for what many around the world don't have at all, and want. The simplest of things, basic freedoms.

I don’t know, though, if I expect more huge gains soon.

They are still somewhat in that position, but these new lines offer fewer juicy salients and fewer realistic vectors of attack.  I do think we will see Ukraine keep the pressure on, just don’t know if we see a huge victory like we did near Izyum or in Kherson.

It seems the next step is to wreck the Crimea land bridge supply lines. Once the rail is compromised, Russian supply & logistics is fubar, and the Russian territory will eventually collapse from within like a black hole, similar to Kharkiv, Izyum & Kherson.

Wagner and russian professionals should be treated like the SS.  Killed or Crippled on site.  Sledgehammer to the spine and then traded back as an invalid.

Yep, the fact that the head of Wagner is bragging about the sledgehammer video and saying “a dog gets a dog’s death” about it speaks volumes.

HIMARS O’clock?

Also, Russia running short of missiles and drones?  Seems like they would have lashed out after Kherson.

This will go over well with parents.

As a life-long American, I understand why someone would say we are "stupid."  Let's be honest; we don't always carry ourselves well.  But calling the British "hypocritical," is out of line.  She needs to apologize.

If I was Russia I’d call up 300 congressmen and say:

If R- “we’ve got to be America first.  We can’t keep shipping weapons to places that are none of our business.  I’ve got $5MM for your PAC if you take this position. Sponsor a bill like that and it gets voted on? I’ll double it.”

If D- “We cannot indefinitely promote the military industrial complex.  We salute the flag, not the CEO of Lockheed. The culture of death has to stop.  I’ve got $5MM for your favorite PAC if you take this position. Sponsor a bill like that and it gets voted on? I’ll double it.”

That’s $1.5B.   That would be their best military expense by miles.

Well she's a complete dumbshit so if she's a product of American schooling, then she might have a point.

It's an absolute certainty that they ARE doing this.

It's not working.

Hopping the river, even if it’s way out there on the peninsula is a start, but this is a long way from being valuable. The issue is that moving eastward enough to make it a viable beachhead is going to be slow going, if not impossible.

It isn’t a spot that makes sense to place any form of artillery or rocket inplacements because it is completely isolated and is difficult to resupply and limited terrain to move around on to help against counter battery concepts. It might be an interesting spot to help extend an antiair screen which limits attack runs from below Kherson and in effect makes all air strikes flying straight into Kherson.

But, this is a nice PR win by being able to say they have officially hopped the river and are in Crimea.

It’s not Crimea, it is Kherson Oblast.  Not sure about how it plays militarily, but is good PR as they are technically on the West Bank of the Dnipro.

The PR and psychological aspect alone is huge, and they might be under the protection of St. HIMARS.

Makes me wonder - a lot of the military packages that we announce, are already on their way by the time we publicize them, and we announced a bunch of riverine assault boats recently, and they are made just for something like this.

Even if it’s just a bunch of infantry and spotters with drones, MANPADS, and Javelins/NLAWs, they can still do some major damage, shut down a fairly large area, and provide a springboard for assaults down the peninsula.

It also fucks with their plan to transfer most of the forces that were formerly on the right bank of the Dnipro eastward towards Melitopol and Luhansk.

Yeah, could end up tying down thousands of their actual trained soldiers.

Pretty much has to be true. Otherwise, how could they get to the peninsula?

It is actually Mykolaiv Oblast and M777s can provide artillery support from across water.

Wonder if they ate trying to lure RU navy out for another attack on it.
#48641

So the air war over Ukraine looks to be at a stalemate, where neither side can fly with any confidence.  Do you see that changing?  Do you see the UKA taking action to change that and establish some form of air superiority?

#48642

I don't think we will see a lot of offensive air action. More of the further east the Russians can be pushed the wider the safe zone for Ukraine to operate becomes. This could mean more intercepts of Russia's missiles.

Probably not their focus but if it happens, it happens. I think they will start moving east and enter Crimea and leave Melitopol and Mariupol for now.

Hadn’t talked to my daughter in several weeks, she just got back from visiting our exchange daughter and her family in Oslo (recall her photo in full military kit a few pages up). While my daughter was there, exchange daughter got a letter from the Norwegian military, putting her on alert for re-activation. Per their dinner table discussions, the Norwegians pretty much assume war is coming - they’re damn well planning for it.
And she’s heading to Helsinki with some Finnish friends in two weeks…the Finns’ conversations all start with “when the Russians come” - not if, but when. And we all know the Finns’ plans.
Putin has bitten off a lot. If he’s dumb enough to bite off more, they’re fucking ready.
