Anything less means (even more) prolonged misery for Ukraine, and a repeat for some other country in a decade or so.  I've moved on from "let us be careful not to start WWIII" to "let us make sure Russia can't keep raping it's neighbors".

It’s pretty clear now that if they aren’t stopped in Ukraine, Russia will keep attacking and invading other countries until the US and/or NATO have to get involved militarily, putting us on the path to WWIII.

Putin will not stop with Ukraine. He has told us multiple times exactly who he is, and that he doesn’t care what the cost is, and way too many of us failed to heed his warning, particularly in the summer of last year when he published his little essay.

Russia’s only aircraft carrier caught fire on Thursday, only a matter of months before it was meant to return to sea after lengthy repairs.

The Admiral Kuznetsov was close to being released back to the Russian navy after years of repairs when it caught fire, Alexei Rakhmanov, head of the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency.

That ship is never going to see the open ocean.

Scrap it and make some tanks. They are going to need them.

Naw. There is something magical about your enemy’s flagship shit box being stuck in drydock indefinitely while, wait wut, boilers are replaced.

And that's after the floating dry dock sunk with it in it.

Story: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/12/russia-ukraine-nuclear-war-putin-threat/672491/

Elon got played by Putin. India and China understand that Putin using even one nuke would change everything.

Quote

More surprising voices have joined in; Elon Musk made Cummings’s latter argument even more emphatically. In October, days before taking official control of Twitter, the entrepreneur declared that if faced with either losing Crimea or using nuclear weapons, Putin “will choose” to use nukes. Musk, too, has cited the prospect of a nuclear war as a justification for a peace deal that would end the war on terms favorable to Russia. The Russia expert and former Trump adviser Fiona Hill told Politico that Putin “plays the egos of big men” such as Musk, and worried that the Russian leader was using Musk as a messenger. Not surprisingly, Cummings defended Musk.

Quote

The realists drastically overestimated Russian strength and grandeur, and they have a history of misreading global power dynamics. True realism would recognize that a variety of participants in the international order have worked hard, and will continue to work hard, to restrain Russia from using nuclear weapons.

Quote

Amid Russia’s serious battlefield reverses, India and China—both of which have bristled under the constraints of the American-led global order—stepped up their warnings that under no circumstances should Putin resort to the nuclear option. Around the time that the Russians were preparing to abandon Kherson, which is among the largest of the Ukrainian cities that have fallen under Russian control since February and sits in a province only recently annexed by Moscow, Putin’s most important international partners were demanding an end to his irresponsible saber-rattling.

Quote

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government reportedly told the Russian defense minister that any use of nuclear weapons must be taken off the table. This was only part of what seems a concerted effort by the Indian government to keep Russia from contemplating the use of nuclear weapons. Out of concern about the issue, Modi has also refused to schedule the annual summit that Indian leaders typically have with their Russian counterparts. The Indians were not holding back.

Perhaps more worrisome for Putin, the Chinese government—which has largely supported Putin—has expressed its strong opposition to any Russian use of nuclear weapons. In November, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke about the subject with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and the public statement they released afterward could not have made for comfortable reading in the Kremlin. Indeed, Xi and Scholz not only opposed any use of nuclear weapons; they went further and condemned even threats to use those weapons. The two leaders didn’t name names, but only one power in the world was threatening to use nuclear weapons at the time.

Quote

Xi and Modi understand something that Trump, Cummings, and realist scholars do not: that the use of nuclear weapons by Putin would be a strategic catastrophe for Russia and the world, one that would probably lead to a collapse in whatever international standing Russia has remaining after its failures in Ukraine. If Putin were to use even one nuclear warhead in Ukraine, he would overturn the entire rationale of when and how nuclear weapons would ever be used.

I thought I could see the strategic value, but now it’s not clear.  Even if they could take Bakhmut, they have no forces to actually exploit the breakthrough and threaten the Ukrainian supply and communications lines.

Video done by the NYT on the killings in Bucha. Not easy to watch. really not easy. And I think after this all said and done we will see quite a bit more of this type of investigations.

Fuck Russia. Time to get Interpol involved and make sure none of these commanders every leave Russia.

Or Ukraine and study up on Operation Gideon's Sword.

False dilemma. If Solovyov doesn’t want to live in a world where Russia loses, there is a third option.

I’d prefer that his arrogance lead him to venture outside of Russian borders….so he can be sent to The Hague, tried for crimes against humanity, and meet his humiliating end crying for mercy as the hangman’s noose is slipped over his neck.

But would the Hague try this monkey dick? Serious. they did not go after teh Serbian propaganda people calling for the genocide in Bosnia. They went after political and military personnel.

I may have missed it, but I really don't remember seeing anyone from the RS being tried for propaganda.

Plus when Putin goes away, does his support from the Kremlin? I think his future is freezing his ass off as a bitter old man on some shitty tundra estate in East Russia.

Yep, Hopefully Hague is busy with Putin and his homies. We should send Solovyov to Poland. They’ll know what do with him.

I’d be fine with him being nabbed off the street by a Ukrainian vengeance squad and just disappeared.
