I’m not gonna lie. This kind of shocked me.   Unless they are just being Tricksy hobbits who want the Ukrainians to think they aren’t going to invade next week.  Yeah dude we’ll turn off the satellites and go home because you said you accomplished all your goals.

But I agree this is a weird tack.  They’ve spent a year talking about rolling through Poland and rolling all the way to Paris, destroying England, etc.   I cannot imagine he’ll be smart enough to declare victory and go home.   But if he does, then you will see real pressure to accept the territory loss and kiss and make up. That would be very threatening to Ukraine, who will not stop.

My knowledge of the most effective ways to conduct trench warfare are extremely limited, but is it normal for soldiers to be deployed with one god of war and the other acting as his squire? "Here, my lord. Your joust. Here, my lord. Your sword. Here, my lord, your RPG. Oh, and here, my lord. Your holy hand grenade. And another. And another."

Yes. It also applies to when you are stuck behind a vehicle. Constant fire is more productive. If both are shooting then you both run out. On my security teams every RPG lead has a loader. RPG fires, AK came up. RPG gets loaded. This way should there be a grenade for instance, hits the team, one is out, the other can take over. Lot of cross training. And there is no weakness in being the loader. You keep up fire, you keep magazines loaded, you keep weapons cool.

So.... The USMC and Army have to guard a position. Yeah, don't think it would go down like this. Shit, I had UK MOD bring me into their perimeter with Afghan guards. Don't think Russia's offensive is going to be that successful.

Translation in the thread.

Biden?

Or Miley. Something is going on. Would love to see Biden give a talk telling Putin to go fuck off.

If it's the Israelis, Americans, and...Italians (?) I wonder if it's going to be a big boost to Ukraine's air defenses, maybe a transfer of some stuff from Italy to Ukraine or Israel to Ukraine.

Speculation that the American delegation came in by motorcade instead of train.

If it's Biden (who is in Europe) or Harris, I imagine those F-22 and F-35 pilots have itchy trigger fingers.  "BARCAP" is something about barrier combat air patrol - basically they are going to be between Russia and whoever they are guarding.

LOL:

This is a translation of another tweet, interesting about the UKR delegation trips to other European countries.

Is it possible that Biden would show up in Ukraine today? UKR high officials urgently canceled trips to the EU, 2 USAF planes have been circling behind Lublin for 10 hours, and large convoys are running around Kiev. Apparently unrelated to the WSE, but such a long term statement would be very important for investors.

#55112

No one knows for sure, but damn, right before the date of the invasion would be sweet.

Hey Putin, tear down your army. (or we will).

This has to be Biden. As long as nothing happens to him, it's a heck of a statement. I mean, it's a heck of a statement either way. I'm glad to see it.

Kyiv is under an air attack warning. Let's think about that.

I hope he is there. But damn, I feel for the security people.

And a question for the experts. We have aircraft watching. If Russia comes into UA airspace and hits the city, do we shoot back?

Not an expert, but I doubt they would hit Kyiv while Biden was there, and if they did, I don't see them entering Ukraine airspace to do it - they'll launch from Russia.  I'd imagine we probably have F-22s and F-35s covering the motorcade to Kyiv and then hanging out nearby.

Also, if Russia were foolish enough to lob a few Biden's way, it's a fantastic way to ensure that we start shipping the kitchen sink (F-16s, ATACMS) to Ukraine.

I am so fucking proud of my country. A former republic is at war and fighting off Russia and our POTUS is there in person to tell Russia to eat shit.

This is the biggest embarrassment of Putin’s life.

If Putin's #1 priority is staying alive, launching an all out attack to kill the US president doesn't seem congruent to that. I can understand sending some missiles to destroy infrastructure while the visit is going on to send a message, but I doubt those missiles hit anywhere near where Biden is announced to be.

They haven't been able to kill Zelensky, yet, and it seems to me he'd be a much more vulnerable target.

If the attacks aren't anywhere close to Biden, I don't see us shooting back.

He's going into a war zone. If the attacks aren't deliberately targeting him, and we haven't exactly negotiated a ceasefire, isn't the onus on Biden/us not to escalate things unless it's a clear effort to kill the president? On the other hand, if they launch an all out attack, I imagine they'll make the call to protect him. Those aircraft on the border aren't there to catch it all on video.

BTW, how about being Giorgia Meloni right now?

"Oh, don't mind me. I'm just the prime minister of Italy telling the most important person in my party to fuck off because I'm supporting Ukraine whether he likes it or not. I'll wait. Back here in the back. Yes, water would be great."

Yep. Diplomat mom always loved Biden. Ran his CODELS is a few places that were not clean and friendly.

Agree, air raids are sounding and he is there. Meanwhile there are reports of MiG-31's up over Belarus.

Concering the next thread. I am sure we back channeled to the Russians. FAFO. We have E-3's up. They can see pretty damn deep. How the fuck to I go to sleep now. Oh say, I beg for a BJ in good Surly style.

By the way, the visit comes on a significant day. This is the day Ukraine honors the “Heavenly Hundred” who were killed on and near Maidan. The first Ukrainians to die fighting Russia.

Good for Joe Biden!

I like that Zelensky, traveling abroad, still wears his pullover as a reminder that he is at war, under attack. I also like that Biden, visiting a war torn nation, still wears the suit, because he’s the fucking president of the U.S. of A.

Question- does Opsec require the president to travel to Kyiv covertly? Or do we let Russia know- “Hey, Ivan. It wouldn’t be a good idea to lob any cruise missiles at Kyiv for the next 36 hours, if you know what’s good for you”?

Normally, I would think something like this would be coordinated with Moscow to avoid any misunderstandings. But the fact that Russian mouth pieces didn't pre announce and denounce the visit suggests that they didn't know.

What an amazing and powerful gesture of support and defiance to go visit Kiev while it's under air raid. First time in modern history that a president has entered a warzone without an active military presence

Biden flew to Warsaw yesterday and traveled overnight by train to Kyiv. His team published a fake schedule for him for yesterday and today. They confiscated the phones of all the journalists in the pool on AF1.

I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point when all wheels were in motion there was a mil-mil call to the Kremlin. But clearly, this was not something we wanted to give Putin a chance to fuck up.

Ok, assholes. It’s coming up on one year of the war. If any of you can send money internationally and want to buy Putin a present, I recommend this group. They’ve crowdsourced over $50 million since the war began and bought everything from drones to a refurbished T-72.

For the year, they are gathering funds to buy an -70 multiple launch rocket system and 365 rockets.  I sent my payment this morning.

No Cloak Room, but I am a political conservative, at heart a Reagan Republican. I have never posted these words before, but here goes- I am proud of Joe Biden. I am also proud that he emphasized bipartisan support for Ukraine (as did McConnell earlier this weekend). He is setting an example for all of us.

I assume he isn’t visiting Kyiv to tell them that we can’t send a certain weapons system. I’m looking forward to the updated goodie list.

It’s not all sunshine and daffodils, unfortunately. Shit is real for Ukraine. Here is a WSJ article from this weekend about how deep into the populace the Ukraine armed forces have to draw

Quote

https://www.wsj.com/articles/ukraines-t ... _lead_pos3

BAKHMUT, Ukraine—A scientist who swapped Antarctica for Bakhmut, a famed ballet dancer and the actor who dubbed Captain America into Ukrainian all left stellar careers to fight on the front line.

All three ended up hospitalized or dead, highlighting that while ordinary Ukrainians are committed, fighting with an improvised army poses danger not only for combatants but also for Ukraine’s prospects on the battlefield as it mobilizes fresh volunteers and conscripts.

Ukrainians have flocked from across the professional spectrum to join the armed forces to defend their country, including many who were exempted from serving or who had little previous military experience.

With a population less than one-third of Russia’s, Ukraine will need to continue drawing in fresh troops from various backgrounds to replenish its front lines after nearly a year of ferocious fighting.

Andriy Zotov, the polar scientist, traveled 11,000 miles from his Antarctic base—by yacht, plane and car—to enlist, later becoming a captain, despite being 49 years old and having a military exemption.

At least six people from Ukraine’s National Antarctic Scientific Center are working with the military, creating what members jokingly call the Penguin Battalion.

“We went to the front line not because we wanted to fight. We went because we had no choice,” Mr. Zotov said from hospital, after being shot outside of Bakhmut, one of the conflict’s main battlefields.

The scientist felt called to fight as Russia built up its forces on Ukraine’s borders in 2021.

“We will disappear as a nation if we do not fight,” he recalls thinking while he was still on the polar ice fields.

While the U.S. and other Western nations have relied on a professional military in recent conflicts and been able to spend time training new recruits, Ukraine’s military, by necessity, has become one of the volunteers.

The country started this war with 196,000 members in its armed forces and 900,000 reservists, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Russia had a 900,000-strong force and 2 million in reserve.

By July, the Ukrainian ranks had swelled with 700,000 new fighters, some conscripted, others volunteers inspired to defend their nation.

Many Ukrainian volunteers are inexperienced civilians who learn on the job. Given the current demands, Ukrainian recruits receive around a month of training, compared with the five to six months of basic training many Western militaries give their infantry.

Oleksandr Shapoval, a 47-year-old award-winning ballet soloist, took great pride in his grandfather’s World War II service and joined an assault division where he operated antitank weapons.

“Sasha had never shot at all, and here he was given a grenade launcher,” said Roman Trushiev, 46, a friend who joined up with him. But in three months, they went to the firing range to train just four times, he said.

Former U.S. and British soldiers working in Ukraine say the lack of training shows, with newer recruits often lacking some basic skills.

“First aid, basic tactics and procedures improve their chances of survival,” said Lance Zaal, a former U.S. Marine who helps train Ukrainian troops.

The civilian nature of this army may be a factor in high casualties. U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in November that Ukraine’s military had then suffered an estimated 100,000 deaths or injuries.

With no previous military experience, actor Dmytro Linartovych was soon on the front line outside of Bakhmut after what he said was good training.

Being in local movies and providing the Ukrainian voice of Captain America in Marvel Studios movies and other U.S. hits gave him no privileges.

“This is a war, no one here cares what kind of carpet I had in my apartment before that,” he said.

On the morning of Jan 10., Mr. Linartovych, a lieutenant, escaped Russian mortar fire into an armored car. But as he fired from its windows, shrapnel hit him in the temple.

Lt. Linartovych’s helmet cushioned the blow, but with blood flowing down his face he knew he was badly hurt.

“My lifestyle has completely changed. I saw 200 to 300 corpses, mines, bullets whistling,” he said, speaking from a hospital in Kyiv, where he had surgery to remove shrapnel from his ear and head.

Capt. Zotov’s journey from Antarctica started several days after the invasion, when a Polish yacht carrying tourists picked him up and took him to Argentina.

Once in Ukraine, Capt. Zotov joined the 28th Mechanized Brigade, the unit he had fought with in 2014 when Russia-backed separatists seized parts of eastern Ukraine.

After a month’s training, he went into action near Oleksandrivka, a southern village where fighting was heavy.

Capt. Zotov said artillery shells would explode just a couple of yards from his company, throwing people into the air and giving himself and others frequent concussions. He dragged wounded soldiers from the battlefields and others charged at Russian positions with their rifles.

No matter how hard Oleksandrivka was, Bahkmut, a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, would prove harder.

On the morning of Dec. 18, Capt. Zotov said he and four colleagues had just completed a patrol when a Russian reconnaissance unit fired from 100 yards away. The bullets tore into their car and one entered Capt. Zotov’s pelvic area.

“At that moment you think about everything, and when I saw the caliber (of the bullet) I thought this could be a very bad injury,” he said.

Capt. Zotov was evacuated to a hospital where he had surgery to remove pieces of a bullet lodged in his pelvis.

Pvt. Shapoval was less lucky. On Sept. 12, he died in a hail of mortar fire.

“He had always wanted to be like his grandfather, so there could be no talk of whether he would go to war,” said Tatiana Lozova, a ballerina at the National Opera of Ukraine.

Some colleagues were also unsurprised when he died.

“What can you learn in a month [of training]?” said Eygen Kaygorodov, a ballet teacher.

Many others who left top careers to fight have died, including some whose skills and expertise will be difficult to replace. Among them were a well-known Ukrainian TV host, a prolific historian and, earlier this month, one of the country’s top athletes. Around 100 Ukrainian athletes and athletics coaches have died in the war, the government says.

As losses mounted, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last month told students at one of the country’s top universities that military commanders were working on a new mobilization drive.

Ukrainian officials have since appeared outside of large stores handing out draft notices.

If he is able, Capt. Zotov says he will rejoin the fight. He says he hasn’t thought about his old career and the Antarctic since leaving, and will only do so once the war is over.

“The past ends at the front line,” he said. “Any sentimental thought will make you weak in that situation.”
