Apologize for the bullshit hearsay, but my brother called me 15 minutes ago to tell me that his Russian friend was hearing from home about this, and that MOD troops were defecting to Wagner.    For what it’s worth, my brother, said, his friend believed his relatives in Russia.

How anyone in Russia can know what the hell the truth was is beyond me, so take it for what it’s worth, and not me vouching for it.

Seriously, this thread has been a fucking gem and a better way to stay up to date than most anything else you'd find

There's been mentions on Fox News and CNN (that I know of), but the problem is none of the major networks have anybody on the ground in Moscow or Rostov on Don, so they are skittish when trying to frame it.

With that said, the online coverage is pretty solid - BBC and CNN have the rolling timeline articles going on.

What if someone called Prigo and said hey those rubles Putin pays you with are fucking worthless. We'll pay you euros to take Moscow and then you can do whatever you want inside Russian borders as long as you don't fuck with the rest of Europe...

Ya notice how the Wagnerites are getting in position?

Notice how the civilians are not?

Either this is staged, or those civilians are really fucking stupid.

It's weird as shit.  My guess is that everything has already been done and they are just going through the motions/clearing the building/looking for valuable prisoners (generals).

Or, they've taken the buildings, and the soldiers we are seeing in the streets are some kind of home guard shit (their uniforms are weird, they have different arm bands, etc.) and they were ordered to fight Wagner or go to Ukraine or something.

Or the soldiers in the streets are Russian soldiers who defected to Wagner, and were outfitted the way they were to disguise that they were regular Russian troops.

I'm not going to lie, it's fucking weird, but I also don't think this is a sham - Putin would not risk destabilizing the country just to rid himself of Shoigu/Gerasimov - he'd simply either reassign them, or just remove their responsibilities/privileges and let them keep the title, but move the power to underlings.  He's done it multiple times over the past few years.

I've even seen people say that this is Putin's way of pulling out of Ukraine - it's a false flag arranged with Prigozhin that would cause Russian troops to be brought out of Ukraine, but again, Putin risks destabilizing the whole fucking country when he controls the media and could just say "we're pulling out, we denazified Ukraine and that's that" and nobody in the media would contradict him.

Voronezh is about 7 hours away from Rostov-on-the-don using the M4 road (assuming they move as fast as cars and have enough dimes for all the tolls). I'm guessing that Shoigu/Gerasimov will try to pull together a blocking unit to hinder any rapid advancement. Voronezh is about 6 hours from Moscow so it is almost directly the midpoint to Moscow. Putin absolutely has to avoid any type of rebel force accumulating in the Moscow outskirts otherwise any last shred of credibility with the populace will be stripped away on the Kremlin's doorsteps.

Are there any other type of logistic hubs/airfields/etc that may be useful to Mr. Priggy? I'm also assuming that he has preparing at least for some of these once he got the orders to leave Bakhmut. They have had a little bit of time to regroup and refit, especially once MoD made the announcement about the July deadline. Not sure how long they can hold out with current supplies but I'm also sure they can manage to liberate a few supplies, toilets and toiletries to keep them in the lifestyle that they are used to.

That’s because I don’t think anyone knew the scope of what’s happening or what even is going on. Seems like a pretty confusing situation over there. I imagine this gets worked out soon and Wagner stands down. Because if it gets any bigger they’ll be snuffed out.

maybe some of us are tracking shit other than TikTok comments. They cannot stand down. See, if they do, well then they are dead. There are a few books about Russia's previous revolutions. Peter Hopkirk is a good place to start. Don't read his afghan shit, cuz we all know how that ended.

One thing I'd seriously advise against here is looking for some strategy, well-thought-out plans or even logic. If I know anything about Russia in crisis (and I do), it's emotions, reflexes and chaos that usually rule the day.
Putin said he could take Kyiv in 11 minutes. It appears that’s actually how long it takes to grab his cities.

In a 1973 lecture Sir Michael Howard discussed surprise, noting “this is an aspect...which needs to be studied above all others in the Armed Forces: the capacity to adapt oneself to the utterly unpredictable, the entirely unknown. Today, another surprise. 1/25🧵

rest of Mick's longcat spoilered:

Spoiler
3/ In an audio statement in the past 24 hours, #Prigozhin stated that: "Shoygu is killing children by throwing untrained soldiers, conscripts included, into the war…We only fight with professionals. But if someone stands in our path, we will destroy EVERYTHING in our way."

5/ How will this chaos impact on Russian leadership? Given Wagner’s role in eastern #Ukraine, how will the Russian army have to adapt their forces to cover for their loss? How will the Ukrainians exploit this as part of their ongoing offensives? None yet have clear answers.

7/ Soldiers, citizens and politicians have been surprised, consistently, over thousands of years of history. The writings of ancient historians such as Thucydides, Polybius, and Herodotus contain many examples of one nation gaining victory through surprise and deception.

9/ How surprise is achieved has evolved. New areas such as deepfake misinformation, high-speed hypersonic weapons, long-range autonomous vehicles and cyber operations complement more long-standing means of deceiving an enemy and achieving surprise.

11/ The Belgorod Incursion. In May and June 2023, armed groups crossed the border from Ukraine and into the Russian Belgorod region. This caused some shock in senior levels of the Russian government and necessitated a re-assessment of Russian military dispositions.

13/ The Kerch Bridge. On 8 October 2022, in a spectacular attack, the Kerch Bridge from Russia to occupied Crimea was attacked. It had an impact on traffic from Russia to occupied Crimea and was probably a determinant in replacement of the Russian overall commander at the time.

15/ Reinvigoration and expansion of NATO. One of Putin’s key assumptions when he decided on launching his special military operation was that the West would respond in a similar way to 2014. However, NATO responded in a much more meaningful way than the Russians expected.

17/ Defeat of Russian army at the gates of Kyiv. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine commenced, many Western commentators believed that Ukraine would not be able to hold out against the Russians for more than a few days, or a few weeks at the most.

19/ And who can forget the Moskva?

21/ No amount of technological sophistication, or meshing of civil and military sensor networks, will lead to full battlefield transparency. Nor will it provide certainty about the decision calculus of adversary leaders – or even the decision making of friends and allies.

23/ Surprises like #Prigozhin’s move of the past 24 hours therefore remain one of the enduring elements of #war. And as we have seen today, and throughout this war, it will continue to be a feature of the war in #Ukraine until Russia is finally defeated. End

You do not snuff out an insurgency. Once it starts it continues.

And if you are the Russian military leadership, you HAVE to contact every unit in Ukraine and within say a thousand miles of Moscow, or contact somebody monitoring those units, and you have to get a sense of where their loyalties are as well as a physical location.

Caesar's address on the Prigozhin situation.

I have the honor! Interesting events are unfolding in the expanses of our homeland and they are very reminiscent of the troubled times of a century ago. The stupid, corrupt and incompetent military-political top of Putin's Russia turns hundreds of thousands of men into mincemeat.

Evgeny Prigozhin, himself a descendant of Putin's nomenklatura, has decided that it is time for him to play his own game, thanks to his "orchestra" at the ready. We know that he has many supporters among the Russian population and within the security services. We know that Prigozhin has big political ambitions and that he is fed up with greasy generals in offices who can't really fight. We know that if he launches an armed insurgency, he is very likely to succeed.

But we also remember how he and his accomplices cut people's heads off, killed their own people with a hammer cynically videotaped and mocked the unarmed. We should not ascribe to him a military honor and valor that does not exist.

Prigozhin calls for a fight against the renegade generals and for a war to the bitter end. But this war is not in the interests of the peoples of Russia. Prigozhin's battle with Shoigu, Gerasimov, and their generals is simply a battle for a feeding trough and the opportunity to continue to destroy and plunder the nations. Today's Russia is a collection of jackals who are tearing each other and the entire country apart.

We, the free citizens of Russia, will not leave our people alone with uncertainty and fear. We will put an end to the war and free our homeland from the rotten system, no matter whose system it is: Putin's or Prizhin's. Our comrades-in-arms, get ready! Russia will be free!

Thank y’all for your insight and reporting.  This is an amazing turn of events.  Or an incredibly elaborate misdirection.  I now admit, sadly, I regretfully voted for Putin twice.  And there is a slight chance he may have been lying to us.
