Re Georgia and Hungary- Are they betting on Russia winning the war? Or are they just betting on a Putin-ruled Russia continuing to be a strong player in the region after the war ends somehow? That’s not a bad or dumb bet, and it involves some realpolitik.

My prediction, BTW…and it’s almost certainly wrong, we’ll just see HOW wrong: the counteroffensive slowly re-captures territory lost in the east, and importantly, down to the Sea of Azov, cutting the land route to Crimea. Ukraine then makes life shitty for Crimea. An armistice is signed that has Ukraine keep what it has recaptured, and Russia keeps Crimea. Massive military buildup on both sides of the demarcation line. Requires some sort of international peacekeeping force to keep fighting from flaring up again. The Ukraine Russia border becomes Europe’s Korean border.

Well, while that makes some sense, the legal right to massive amounts of oil and natural gas off Crimea takes this off the table if Ukraine wants a way to pay for the destruction caused by the war. And they need those oil and gas resources to try to achieve energy independence and not be as susceptible to Russia or others’ manipulation of supplies.    In my opinion the value to Russia in keeping Crimea is a giant reward for the 2014 & 2022 invasions of Ukraine - a sovereign nation.

I think for the long-term it is far more important that Russia be taught that it cannot profit from invading other countries in the 21st-century.  If it gets to keep Crimea, it won’t have learned that lesson.

Are they doing this to legacies too?!?

2/ The Ingush news website Fortanga reports that students are being forced to go in person to receive their diplomas. They are immediately being handed a summons for mobilisation, in front of witnesses, and have to decide whether to accept it. Their decision is recorded.
4/ "Either you get a summons or you sign a waiver of the summons. So, if you receive a summons, it means you have to go to the army, but if you refuse to sign it, you are 'hello, motherfucker, it's prison'."
6/ The idea was subsequently adopted by local military enlistment office staff. It's legal, as long as the right procedures have been followed. Educational establishments can serve summonses but can't write them out themselves – that has to be done by military enlistment offices.

There's got to be a Russian commander somewhere along that long front who would be willing to have his men stand down in return for a bazillion dollars and a yacht filled with hookers.

Okay, this might *officially* be one of the more disturbing things I've seen about the Russians. It started with this meme on a pro-Ukraine account (@KvotheTheArcane):

Now, I wasn't really sure what I was looking at, so I went into the comments, and others had the same question. It was explained that the Russian Army is now having to "palletize" their war dead, which is what you see wrapped in plastic. Don't mind the smears.

The above is the more viewer-friendly version of what you'd see. In the below [SPOILERED NSFL], a separate account was mentioned that has photos showing bodies before they've been shrinkwrapped.

This sounds sensible, you would think the Russians would only consider blowing up the plant if they were in danger of losing it. Seems now they are setting a narrative in case they do decide to blow it up later https://t.co/sN7ts3gZIb

Ukraine has been consistently warning about Russian plans to sabotage the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in a near mirror of their previous warnings of imminent Russian plans to sabotage the Kakhovka Dam. And they weren’t crying wolf; on June 6th Russia blew up the structure. https://t.co/ov9VYOiUik

Over 230,000 casualties

r/ukraine - Russian losses until 04.07.2023

r/ukraine - Ministry of Defence UK - Daily Ukraine update 04.07.2023

How to understand?

-Casualties are KIA and seriously wounded

-Russia has a higher % of KIA, due to poor battlefield recovery standards

-Russia tactics use a lot of cannon fodder. The cannon fodder typically comes from prisons, homeless and conscripts from Russian occupied Ukraine. They don’t waste a lot of time training them. This is significant; how much concern would there be in the US about a war with 80k dead, if 60k were homeless, felons and draftees from Peurto Rico? That’s the game Putin plays.
-point being: the Russians aren’t “feeling” the losses. They will, soon.

I think a forgotten factor is how bad the Russian economy is getting. Of course the Russian ethos is suffering, it will be interesting to see how long before the common man gets chippy.

Now we have information from our intelligence that the Russian military has placed objects resembling explosives on the roof of several power units of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Perhaps to simulate an attack on the plant. Perhaps they have some other scenario. But in any case, the world sees – can't but see – that the only source of danger to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is Russia and no one else. Unfortunately, there was no timely and large-scale response to the terrorist attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. And this may incite the Kremlin to commit new evil. It is the responsibility of everyone in the world to stop it, no one can stand aside, as radiation affects everyone.

#68250
15 minutes ago, Parliament said:

At this point in time, we should join Brisket on his ledge.

I'd like to think that Putin knows that taking out a nuclear powerplant and potentially putting fallout all over Eastern Europe and/or down into the Black Sea would be a line too far.  It would see the West, at the very least, coming down with serious sanctions on China, India, and anybody else still doing business with Russia.

But Putin obviously does not have a grasp on what is going on, and he's got a sunk-cost fallacy that has completely taken over his mindset. After all, while it was clear the Russians planned to blow the dam, and then blew it, they didn't do a very good job in thinking it through that they screwed thousands of their own soldiers over, and cost themselves a lot of vehicles that they desperately need.  Blowing that power plant could easily harm Russia as much as anybody else.

My guess is that he will try to use the powerplant as blackmail - I happen to be in the minority, but I don't think Ukraine stops without Crimea for a couple of reasons, one being economic, but two being that if Ukraine keeps this up, they will cut the land bridge in the near future, and they will have (or do have) the means to hit the Kerch Strait bridge, cutting Crimea off.  No way they watch as Russia laboriously and slowly tries to keep Crimea supplied with ferry boats, without trying to take it back. They also have to decisively defeat Russia in order to maybe keep the Russians from fucking around for a while.
